St. Brendan Weekly Bulletin November 21, 2018 Visit our website Thank you for supporting the annual Diaper Bag Drive! Message from the Principal Dear Families, As we prepare for our Thanksgiving holiday we remember the abundant gifts we are thankful for. I continually think about this incredible community I am blessed to be apart of. I am THANKFUL that you have chosen to share your children with us. I enjoy watching them learn and grow each day here at St. Brendan. I am THANKFUL for our amazing staff who work diligently to form our children both academically and spiritually. I am THANKFUL for a supportive parish community who continues to pray for and support our school. I am THANKFUL for the unwavering support from all of our families who continually partner with us to support our students and school. THANK YOU! I am excited to announce that we have hired Mrs. Andrea Mascarenhas as our Interim Librarian. She has been shadowing and training with Mrs. White these past few weeks. We are excited to have her on board! Each Fall and Spring we ask parents to fill out a school survey. This survey gives us important feedback to evaluate our areas of strength and opportunity. Please take a few moments to complete the following survey: annual fall survey. This survey will be open until the end of day today. Thank you for your feedback! Thank you for all that you do for our students and school! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Blessings, Catherine Shumate Catholic Corner Happy Thanksgiving! As we approach the hectic busyness of the holiday season, remember to pause each day to give thanks to God for his abundant blessings. If
you have a home, food for dinner, running water, clothes to keep you warm, an opportunity for education, and the ability to pursue your goals in life, then you are truly blessed! Try the prayer below for some extra focus on being thankful this Thanksgiving. If you are braving the shopping crowds this weekend, think about a gift from Jesus. A fun tradition to start or continue is to give your child(ren) a special gift from Jesus; maybe a religious piece of jewelry, or a book, or a prayer journal. Then, your child(ren) will be surprised to find a gift from Jesus under the tree at Christmas! Thanksgiving Table Prayer O Gracious God, we give you thanks for your overflowing generosity to us. Thank you for the blessings of the food we eat and especially for this feast today. Thank you for our home and family and friends, especially for the presence of those gathered here. Thank you for our health, our work and our play. Please send help to those who are hungry, alone, sick and suffering war and violence. Open our hearts to your love. We ask your blessing through Christ your son. Amen. Students need to be in their classrooms at 6:30 PM. Please do not have the child bring their coat to their classroom. The school will be locked during and after the program. The Christmas Program will be about an hour long. Students will be picked up by their parent in the church. Classes will remain seated as parents check their child out. Students K-8 are to participate and stay for the ENTIRE program as part of their music grade. Performing, listening, and appreciating music are essential elements to their music education. Students will sit with their classes for the duration of the program. Plus, all students (K-8) will perform at the end of the program. What to wear – Christmas best! It would be lovely to see the children in the best Christmas attire! Please know that it may get warm in the church, so boys in full suits might be too uncomfortable. Christmas best – Christmas colors! Dresses, skirts, slacks, nice shoes. Please no t-shirts, jeans, yoga pants, or dirty shoes. Also Extended Care will close at 5 PM the day of the concert to allow parents to dress and feed their children prior to the program.
Join us for our first-ever Christmas Mingle presented by PTO! December 14th, immediately following the Christmas concert. The St. Brendan School PTO invites all families and Christmas concert attendees to a post-concert reception in the narthex. Enjoy light refreshments, take family photos, and mix and mingle with your friends and family. Christmas Concert DVD We are again taking orders for an INDEXED DVD of our wonderful and cherished Christmas Concert! This is a lot less stressful than jockeying for the best seat in the house. What a great way to say “I LOVE YOU” to your relatives who cannot make the program… You no longer have to hit your camcorder repeatedly thru the concert hoping the battery doesn’t die before the concert is over… 8th grade parents have a wonderful documented memory of your child in the Nativity Tableau forever! Click here to download the order form. Speech Club St. Brendan was well represented by the Speech Team at the St. Vincent de Paul Speech Tournament on November 17, 2018. We had only a small group participating in this practice tourney, but our students did a fantastic job! Congratulations to all of the Speech Team participants! St. Brendan took the top 3 places in the Humorous division with Tomas Connolly Mejia placing 1st, Danielle Mascarenhas placing 2nd and Amanda Connolly Mejia placing 3rd. For the Impromptu event, Trystan Yanez placed 2nd and Zoe Young was a finalist. Great job everyone! The students are working hard to prepare for the Bishop Blanchet Tournament coming up in December. Spirit Day & Student Store The next Spirit Day and Student Store is next Wednesday, November 28th. Students can wear their St. Brendan Spirit Wear or CYO Jersey in place of their uniform. Only school Spirit Wear/CYO jerseys can replace the uniform. Uniforms cannot be replaced with non-uniform clothes such as leggings, jeans, or other non-uniform clothing. Students can also bring cash to purchase items from the store including pens, pencils, notepads, toys, and popcorn. Items range from $0.50 to $3.00 each. Please send the child's spending money in a Ziploc bag with the child's name on it.
Christmas Student Store Students do their very own Christmas Shopping! The “Christmas Gift Store” will be on Monday, December 10th. This is a chance for students to have their very own shopping trip to pick out gifts for their parents or other loved ones. The “Christmas Gift Store” will be stocked with moderately priced gift items, between $2 -$5 each. We want every child to be able to participate in this store, so if your family needs any financial assistance, please let your teacher know before December 10th and we will make arrangements. For the little shoppers, it is best to send money (cash only please) in a bag with their name on it. Purchases will be limited to four items per shopper to allow all shoppers the opportunity to purchase enough gifts. A portion of the proceeds will benefit an outside organization selected by the Student Store Club. Volunteers are needed the night before from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, and the day of from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to help our little shoppers choose and wrap their gifts. Please click here for the available volunteer opportunities. Please contact Sherry Huettl if you have any questions: sherryberryhill@yahoo.com. Optional Opportunity to Support the Giving Tree while Students Shop This year students have the unique opportunity to help with St. Brendan Church’s Giving Trees while shopping at the Christmas Store. The Giving Trees provide over 1,200 gifts for people in need. From Beautiful Soles to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Giving Trees reach many adults and children in our community. With parent permission, students can donate in one of two ways: a set dollar amount or donate their change after shopping. The money collected throughout the day will be pooled and used to purchase as many of the remaining Giving Tree gifts as possible. Thank you for your generosity as we celebrate the true spirit of the season. Please check the Wednesday Envelope for the flyer and permission slip. Santa Hat Day - December 10th On the day of the Christmas Student Store (December 10th), students are welcome and encouraged to wear a Santa/Christmas hat or headband.
6th Grade Drive for St. Vincent de Paul The annual St. Vincent de Paul Food Collection is upon us. The collection will take place from November 27th through December 7th. Our school goal is $888. We hope each family will donate $6 or more to make this a real success. The hope is to put together 12 baskets for families in need. Last year St. Brendan families donated over $800 for this wonderful project. The sixth graders are responsible for collecting all funds daily. At the end of the drive there will be a shopping trip with budgets and shopping lists. The members of the St. Brendan Parish St. Vincent de Paul are responsible for the delivery of the food boxes (pictured: last year's 6th grade class preparing food boxes). We hope that you can be generous in donating to this important food basket collection. Please contact Mrs. Kasprick with any questions (annak@school.saintbrendan.org). Thank you for your generosity and support. Winter Coats, Blankets and Socks Drive We are collecting new or gently used coasts of all sizes (children and adults), gently used or new blankets, and adult-size socks. Donations will be accepted at school until December 21sst. Donations benefit St. Francis House and Noel House. St. Francis House was just robbed, so they are in extra need of support this year: http://www.nwcatholic.org/news/local/after- break-in-and-theft-of-its-van-st-francis-house-needs-donations.html Noel House is in high need of blankets. Thank you for any help you can give. Giving Tree GIVING TREE St. Brendan Parish puts on a large giving tree program every year, it supports multiple organizations in the community. Many organizations rely on our support to sustain them through the entire year. The trees will be in the lobby from November 14 till the noon mass on December 16th. Please take a tag and help someone in need. Please return your tagged items by 10 AM on December 16th. Giving Tree will also be collecting new or gently used blankets, as well as new toys and other new items that could be used as gifts for teens. Noel House in downtown Seattle has a desperate need for blankets and have asked if we could help. They have also requested laundry detergent. These items will be used in Sibling House and Mathew House's Christmas Store.
