CATHOLIC CONFERENCE OF OHIO May 8, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As the “Responsible Restart Ohio Plan” is implemented during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, allowing a gradual return to work and lifting of some of the restrictions regarding consumer, retail and services, returning to operation, we your bishops, together with you, are anxious for the safe return to the public celebration of Mass/Liturgy. While making every effort to respect the spirit of the governor’s instructions, we want to begin in some way to make the public celebration of Mass/Liturgy available. To that end, we inform you that the bishops of Ohio have agreed that each diocese will determine a soft opening date later in May granting permission for the public celebration of weekday Mass/Liturgy, where it can be achieved safely and where pastorally possible, with less than 50 percent occupancy of the Church building, respecting social distancing. This plan provides for the possibility of the gradual return to the public celebration of Mass/Liturgy and prepares us for the Solemnity of Pentecost on the weekend of 30/31 May, when Sunday Mass/Liturgy will be publicly celebrated. During the next few weeks, we will be working with our pastors and diocesan pastoral staffs to prepare for a soft opening of public celebration of weekday Mass/Liturgy. To this end, we ask our pastors with their parish staffs to prepare to implement a rigorous effort to fulfill guidelines, which will be forthcoming from each Diocese/Eparchy, to include maintaining social distancing, recommendations to provide a safe environment, and instructions for the distribution of Holy Communion. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass/Liturgy remains in effect. As your bishops, we continue to be cautious and concerned for those who are most at risk, the elderly and those with serious health issues. We also remain deeply concerned for our priests, many of whom we find in this category. We strongly urge those who are most vulnerable and their caregivers to stay at home, and we implore those who are not feeling well, or who fear that their own health or that of their family may be compromised, to refrain from coming to church at this time. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we implement this gradual return to the public celebration of Mass/Liturgy. Together, we continue to pray for all who are suffering from Covid-19, for all health care workers and first responders, for all the deceased and their families, and for an easing of the anxiety and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the Motherly care of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, we unite our sufferings to those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we trust in the glorious hope of His Resurrection. Most Rev. Dennis M. HOLY ANGELS | ST. MARY’S | STS. PETER & PAUL The CATHOLIC PARISHES of SANDUSKY 5 May 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, I pray that this letter finds you healthy, both physically and spiritually! It’s now been over six weeks since we’ve all been able to gather for Mass. By God’s grace, we will hopefully be able to join at the altar on Pentecost Sunday (May 30-31). Stay tuned to our social media pages and our website for updates! Despite the fact that we can’t gather together, we can continue to grow in our Catholic faith. Hopefully you’ve had the chance to join Father Jeff, Father Chris, our parish deacons and me for devotions and liturgies on our Facebook page and YouTube channel (both can be found under the name: The Catholic Parishes of Sandusky). If you haven’t seen the great things happening there yet, be sure to check it out; I think you’ll be glad you did! And while online, take a look at our updated tri-parish website, sanduskycatholic.org. There, you’ll find a lot of information and resources to keep you ‘in the know’ about parish events and happenings, including a digital copy of our parish bulletin! You can also sign-up for our parish electronic bulletin newsletter that will be delivered directly to your email! Thanks to several Small Business Administration loans through the federal government, many of our parish staff members have been able to return to work. We applied for these loans so that we could bring our employees back to work and because a portion of the loans will likely be forgiven. As good stewards of parish resources, know that we are making great use of our time and resources: cleaning, organizing, catching up on projects, calling our homebound parishioners, and most of all preparing for the future. As we try to imagine what the future will look like, we have to be prudent and begin to plan for what many are calling “the new normal;” this includes everything from the way we worship at Mass to the way we undertake the day-to-day administration of our parish. Because we are committed to celebrating the sacraments reverently and safely, we will be cooperating with the Diocese of Toledo in the coming weeks to determine how best to move forward and what new procedures will need to be implemented to protect our parishioners. Our Church and our world are experiencing a watershed moment that’s quickly changing the way we live. More and more, we've been hearing the phrase “We’re all in this together.” For me, this isn’t just a nice slogan for the stay-at-home days. It’s what the Catholic Church has said from the beginning—it’s what we do! Our Church is all about unity, even when we're alone. So, together we’ll adapt not just to survive, but to grow and flourish. Together, we’ll be stronger than ever. Together, we'll be holy and well-prepared for the future! I hope you’ll join me in making 'our new normal' something amazing! I’m really looking forward to seeing all of you soon! Until then, do me a big favor: pray for your parish, your neighbors, friends, family and priests. If you know of someone who’s struggling and needs help, reach out as best you can—and then call your parish office so that we can help, too! If you need a priest, know that we’re here for you—all day, every day. May the risen Christ shine his glorious face upon you and give you and your loved ones every blessing! Reverend Monte J. Hoyles, JCL Pastor PASTORAL OFFICE | 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 | 419-625-7500 | www.sanduskycatholic.org
INFORMATION ON THE HOLY MASS Even though we are not permitted to have a congregation at Mass at this time, Mass has not been cancelled! The priests of Sandusky continue to offer Holy Mass each and every day. We offer these Masses for the intentions listed below which had been scheduled weeks or even months in advance. Rest assured that your loved ones are being remembered at the altar even if you are not able to be present. Throughout this worldwide pandemic, the Eucharist is still being celebrated somewhere in the world at every moment of every day. “It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without Holy Mass.” (Padre Pio) Below, find some information on ways to unite yourself spiritually with the Sacrifice of the Mass.
