Fourth Sunday of Trinitytide
MEDITATION

The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain,
to find the place where all the beauty came from — my country, the place
where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the
longing? The longing for home? For indeed it now feels not like going, but like
going back.

WELCOME
Second City Church is a community that exists
                      to worship the Triune God
and to celebrate, in word and deed,
the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Harrisburg.

WHO we are? Second City Church is a community that exists to worship
the Triune God and to celebrate, in word and deed, the Gospel of Jesus Christ
in Harrisburg.
WHAT is the Gospel? It is the announcement (literally “good news”) that
Jesus’ cross and resurrection were the beginning of salvation for the entire
cosmos and will be completed when he returns. God is restoring the peace
(shalom) of his creation through the work of Christ and is renewing people,
families, neighborhoods, cities and nations, as people trust and follow him.
HOW do we celebrate the Gospel? Through faithful proclamation and
obedient demonstration. Weekly worship services are the core opportunity for
everyone to know how God is setting things right and to thank him publicly for
it. This public celebration spills over to the rest of our lives where we serve
our neighbors as Christ has served us.
Thank you for joining us in worship today. We hope this guide will help you
participate in our service. If you have any questions about our worship, faith, or
how you can be a part of our mission to serve God and neighbor in
Harrisburg, be sure to talk to our pastor. If you would like to indicate your
presence to us or include a prayer request, please fill out the form on the back
page of this bulletin and place it in one of the slotted boxes in the back of the
Social Hall.

Words of Welcome

Call to Worship

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen!

  O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
  beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
  my lips will praise you.
  So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
                                                                                         Psalm 63:1-3

Gathering Hymn - How Long?
                                                      Do we wait in vain?
How long? Will You turn Your face away? Jesus, give us hope again!
How long? Do You hear us when we pray?
On and on, still we walk this pilgrim way - How How long 'til Your word will still the storm?
long? How long 'til You bare Your mighty arm?
How we groan 'til You snatch us from the
How long 'til Your children find their rest? thorns - How long?
How long 'til You draw them to Your breast?
We go on holding to Your promises - How
long? How long? Sweet the dawn that ends the race
(Refrain) How long? Weak our hearts but strong our legs
'Til You wipe away the tears from ev'ry eye Looking on - great that cloud of witnesses!
'Til we see our home descending from the sky How long?

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have
left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not
loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly
repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and
forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to
the glory of your Name. Amen.

Words of Forgiveness & Peace

He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
 so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
                                                                           Psalm 103:10-13
Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus our sins are forgiven
 Thanks be to God!

My Help, My God

Why are you so full of heaviness? Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks
Why are you disquieted within? to him
O my soul, O my soul My help, my God
As the deer longs for the water brooks Deep calls unto deep like ocean waves,
So my soul it longs, it thirsts for you All your floods and rapids on me break
O my God, O my God Oh my soul, O my soul
Chorus I will say unto my God, my strength,
Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks “How is it you have forgotten me?
to him
O how long? O how long?” (Chorus)
Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks
to him Yahweh grants his kindness in the day
Through the night his song, it is with me.
Oh my God, O my God… (Chorus)

As The Deer

As the deer panteth for the water You alone are my strength, my shield
So my soul longs after Thee To you alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship Thee And I long to worship Thee

You alone are my strength, my shield I want You more than gold or silver
To you alone may my spirit yield Only You can satisfy
You alone are my hearts desire You alone are the real joy giver
And I long to worship Thee And the apple of my eye

You're my friend and you are my Brother You alone are my strength, my shield
Even though you are a King To you alone may my spirit yield
I love You more than any other You alone are my hearts desire
So much more than anything And I long to worship Thee

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Living Our Faith
Psalm Reading
    Psalm 42 and 43

1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God,
          for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food
          day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
          “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
          a multitude keeping festival.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation 6 and my God.
       My soul is cast down within me;
          therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
          from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep
          at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
          have gone over me.
8 By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
                                               7
a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God, my rock:
        “Why have you forgotten me?
     Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
        my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
        “Where is your God?”
11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
        my salvation and my God.

Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
       against an ungodly people,
from the deceitful and unjust man
       deliver me!
2   For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
       why have you rejected me?
Why do I go about mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 Send out your light and your truth;

       let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
       and to your dwelling!
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
       to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
       O God, my God.
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
       my salvation and my God.

                                             8
Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
              world without end. Amen. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

    Jonah 2:3-4; 7

3 For you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
         and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
         passed over me.
4 Then I said, ‘I am driven away
         from your sight;
      yet I shall again look
         upon your holy temple.’

7 When my life was fainting away,
        I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer came to you,
        into your holy temple.

 2 Corinthians 12:2-5

2Iknow a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—
whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that this
man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know,
God knows— 4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. 5 On
behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my
weaknesses.

Gospel Reading

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John:
 Glory to you, O Lord!

 John 12:27-28

27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for
this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from
heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

 The Gospel of the Lord.
 Praise to you, O Christ!

Sermon - Pastor Peter Rowan - As the Deer

                                              10
Creed

Let us affirm the faith of the Church:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
 Creator of heaven and earth.
 I believe in Jesus Christ,
 his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
 born of the virgin Mary,
 suffered under Pontius Pilate,
 was crucified, died, and was buried;
 he descended into hell;
 on the third day he rose again from the dead;
 he ascended to heaven,
 and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Then I will praise him with my guitar

For you are the God in whom I take refuge
Why have you rejected me? I walk around confused.

 To your dwelling
Then I will go to the alter of God
 To God, my exceeding joy
Then I will praise him with my guitar

Why are you cast down low, and in turmoil?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him
Hope in God, for he is my salvation.

LITURGY OF THE TABLE
The Prayer of Great Thanksgiving

Invitation

 The Lord be with you.
 And also with you.
 Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

Praise God for His Mighty Acts

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is your living
Word from before time and for all ages; by him you created all things, and by him you
make all things new. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and
Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim
 the glory of your Name:

Sanctus

                                            14
Praise for Christ’s Sacrifice

Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith.`
Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

Calling on the Holy Spirit

We pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven:
 hallowed be thy name.
 Thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,
 for ever and ever.
 Amen.

Invitation to the Table

Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed, once for all upon the Cross.
Therefore let us keep the feast.

Sharing Holy Communion
Second City Church welcomes all baptized Christians who have made a public profession of faith in Jesus
Christ in a Christian church to join us in this sacrament. Non-communicants can come forward and ask
for a blessing. If you need to receive communion in your seat, ask a fellow worshiper to let the communion
servers know. If you are unable to receive wine, you will find a chalice containing non-alcoholic grape juice
at the station the pastor is serving. The communion bread is gluten-free.

                                                          15
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of
the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ:
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members
of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now
Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to
do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To
him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever.
 Amen.

Benediction
The Lord bless you and keep you. Amen.
The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. Amen.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.
The Lord God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the holy and undivided Trinity, guard
you, save you, and bring you to that heavenly City, where he lives and reigns for ever and
 ever. Amen.
                                                                             Numbers 6:24-26
Closing Hymn - We Abide, We Abide
We are the vineyard You have planted O plant my feet down by the river
Tend our leaves and wild branches We abide, we abide in You
We abide, we abide in You.
We abide, we abide in You. Fruit growing from our strength and labor
rain on us with grace and favor
Where can my soul find living water? We abide, we abide in You
Apart from You we bear no fruit! We abide, we abide in You

Where can my soul find living water?
Apart from You we bear no fruit!
O plant my feet down by the river
We abide, we abide in You

Dismissal
Let us go forth in the Name of Christ.
 Thanks be to God.
