Baptism of Our Lord January 12, 2020 – 10:30 a.m. Grace Lutheran Church 313 S. Prospect Avenue, Champaign, IL 61820 (217) 356-6232 ● office@glccu.org www.glccu.org Pastor: Chris Repp
Welcome to Grace! We're glad you've joined us as we gather to be encountered by God in Word and Sacrament. We believe that God is at work here to create and sustain faith in God’s promise of love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We use a rich, traditional pattern of worship that dates back to the early days of Christianity. We recognize it comes with a bit of a learning curve, but we’re convinced that it’s worth the effort. Don’t feel like you have to get everything the first time. We’ll “carry” you until you get a feel for it. Helpful information for first-time visitors: Restrooms are in the hall to the left of the entrance, on the right opposite the elevator. Our staffed nursery for children 4 and younger is on the right past the restrooms. Clipboards with crayons and activity sheets are on a table in the Narthex (Lobby). Other activities for young children are in the pink and blue totes. Our pastor enjoys meeting visitors. Please introduce yourself. Please sign the Friendship Register located on the pew, next to the center aisle, and pass it to the person next to you during the Offering portion of the service. We provide Name Tags for frequent visitors as well as members. If you would like one, please contact our Office Assistant (office@gracelutherancu.org). Key to the order of service: Regular type: spoken by a leader Bold type: spoken by the people Regular Italics: sung or chanted by a leader Bold Italics: sung or chanted by the people Small Italics: liturgical directions ☩ indicates that the sign of the cross may be made ELW: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (Red Hymnal) As We Gather: In the waters of the Jordan, Jesus is revealed as the beloved Son of God. Through this great epiphany, Jesus fulfills all righteousness and becomes the servant of God who will bring forth justice and be a light to the nations. In the waters of baptism, we too are washed by the Word, anointed by the Spirit, and named God’s beloved children. Our baptismal mission is to proclaim good news to all who are oppressed or in need of God’s healing. Note: This bulletin is available electronically on the worship menu of the Grace web site Large-print bulletins are available from the ushers.
Gathering Prelude The assembly stands. Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the pastor begins. In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another. The assembly kneels or is seated. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The assembly stands. Gathering Hymn Songs of Thankfulness and Praise ELW 310 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Canticle of Praise 2
Prayer of the Day Let us pray. O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated. 3
Word Children’s Sermon Pastor Chris Repp First Reading Isaiah 42:1-9 God’s servant is endowed with God’s spirit in order to bring justice to the nations. The servant will not exercise authority boisterously or with violence, nor will weariness ever prevent the fulfilling of the servant’s task. God’s old promises have been fulfilled; the servant’s new assignment is to bring light to the nations. 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 4
9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalmody Psalm 29 Refrain(R): Tone: 1 Ascribe to the | LORD, you gods, ascribe to the LORD glo- | ry and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory | due God’s name; worship the LORD in the beau- | ty of holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of | glory thunders; the LORD is upon the | mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is a pow- | erful voice; the voice of the LORD is a | voice of splendor. R 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the | cedar trees; the LORD breaks the ce- | dars of Lebanon; 6 the LORD makes Lebanon skip | like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a | young wild ox. 7 The voice | of the LORD bursts forth in | lightning flashes. 8 The voice of the LORD| shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilder- | ness of Kadesh. R 9 The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the | forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD all are | crying, “Glory!” 10 The LORD sits enthroned a- | bove the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for- | evermore. 11 O LORD, give strength | to your people; give them, O LORD, the bless- | ings of peace. Second Reading Acts 10:34-43 Peter crosses the sharp religious boundary separating Jews from Gentiles and proclaims the good news of God’s inclusive forgiveness in Jesus’ name to Cornelius, a Roman centurion. As a result of Peter’s preaching, Cornelius and his family become the first Gentiles to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. 34 Peter began to speak to [Cornelius and his household]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 6
The assembly stands. Gospel Acclamation Gospel Matthew 3:13-17 Before Jesus begins his ministry, he is baptized by John, touched by the Spirit, and identified publicly as God’s child. The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the 3rd chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. Sermon Pastor Chris Repp 7
The assembly stands. Hymn of the Day Crashing Waters at Creation ELW 455 Nicene Creed With the whole church, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the ☩ resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8
Prayers of Intercession Called together through water and the Word, we boldly pray for the church, the world, and all who long to hear God’s voice. The assembly kneels or is seated. Each petition concludes. ...Lord in your mercy. hear our prayer The prayers conclude: You hear the cries of our hearts, O Lord. Fill us with hopeful expectation, that in each day and hour we may love and serve our neighbors, in Jesus’ name. Amen. The assembly stands. Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, and may say, “Peace be with you,” or similar words. After the Peace, the assembly is seated. 9
Meal Offering An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. At this time, please fill out the Friendship Register and pass it to the person next to you if you have not already done so. When all have signed the Register, please return it to the center aisle for later collection. Choir Anthem The Only Son from Heaven arr. J.S. Bach The only Son from heaven, foretold by ancient seers, by God the Father given, in human form appears. No sphere his light confining, no star so brightly shining as he, our Morning Star. Oh, time of God appointed, oh, bright and holy morn! He comes, the king anointed, the Christ, the virgin born, grim death to vanquish for us, to open heav'n before us and bring us life again. 10
The assembly stands as the offering is brought forward. Offering Verse ELW 181 Offering Prayer Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen 11
Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 12
☩ THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 13
Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought but as we are able; we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints. To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. The gifts of God for the people of God. THE LORD’S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. The assembly is seated. 14
