              FOURTH SUNDAY of LENT
             TWENTY SECOND of MARCH

INTROIT
                                   REFLECTION

The grace that is the health of creatures can only be held in common. In healing the
scattered members come together. In health the flesh is graced, the holy enters the world.
The task of healing is to respect oneself as a creature, no more and no less. A creature is
not a Creator, and cannot be. There is only one creation, and we are its members.

— Wendell Berry, Healing, from What are People For?

Question: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
Answer: That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death— to my
faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and
has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that
not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things
must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit,
assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to
live for him.

— Heidelberg Catechism, 1563
OPENING HYMN Words: Henry Tweeny

O SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD Music: Audrey Assad

O Spirit of the living God, thou Light and Fire Divine
Descend upon Thy Church once more and make it truly Thine
Fill it with love and joy and power, with righteousness and peace
Till Christ shall dwell in human hearts, and sin and sorrow cease

Blow, wind of God, with wisdom blow until our minds are free
From mists of error, clouds of doubt, which blind our eyes to Thee
Burn, winged fire, inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal
To preach to all Thy great good news, God's glorious commonweal

So shall we know the power of Christ, who came this world to save
So shall we rise with Him to life which soars beyond the grave
And earth shall win true holiness which makes Thy children whole
Till, perfected by Thee, we reach creation's glorious goal

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
Celebrant: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess
our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(I John 1:8-9). Let us kneel together and confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker and judge of us all: We
acknowledge and lament our many sins and offenses, which we have committed by
thought, word, and deed against your divine majesty, provoking most justly your righteous
anger against us. We are deeply sorry for these our transgressions; the burden of them is
more than we can bear. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
for your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may
evermore serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A brief moment of silence for personal confession.

Celebrant: ✠ Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness
of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring
you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE COMFORTABLE WORDS
Celebrant: Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
(Matthew 11:28)

God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John
3:16)

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ
Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)

If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but
also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2)
ALL MUST BE WELL Words: Mary Bowley-Peters; Music: Matthew Smith

Through the love of God our Savior, All will be well
Free and changeless is His favor, All is well
Precious is the blood that healed us
Perfect is the grace that sealed us
Strong the hand stretched forth to shield us
All must be well

Though we pass through tribulation, All will be well
Ours is such a full salvation, All is well
Happy still in God confiding
Fruitful if in Christ abiding
Steadfast through the Spirit's guiding
All must be well

We expect a bright tomorrow; All will be well
Faith can sing through days of sorrow, All is well
On our Father's love relying
Jesus every need supplying
Yes in living or in dying
All must be well
A COLLECT IN TIME OF
                  GREAT SICKNESS & MORTALITY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Celebrant: Let us pray.

O most mighty and merciful God, in this time of grievous sickness, we
flee to you for support. Deliver us, we beseech you, from our peril; give
strength and skill to all those who minister to the sick; prosper the means
made use of for their cure; and grant that, perceiving how frail and
uncertain our life is, we may apply our hearts unto that heavenly wisdom
which leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
THE FIRST LESSON Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green
pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in
paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my
head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

✠ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was
in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
THE SECOND LESON Ephesians 5:1-14

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual
immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is
proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which
are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that
everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has
no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty
words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of
disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were
darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of
light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to
the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For
it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is
exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.
Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
   and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Lector: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
THE GOSPEL ANTHEM
LORD WHO THROUGHOUT THESE FORTY DAYS
Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us with you to mourn our sins
And close by you to stay.

As you with Satan did contend,
And did the victory win,
O give us strength in you to fight,
In you to conquer sin.

As you did hunger, bear, and thirst
So teach us, gracious Lord
To die to self, and always live
By Your most holy Word
THE HOLY GOSPEL John 9:1-13, 28-38

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE GOSPEL ANTHEM (CONT’D)
LORD WHO THROUGHOUT THESE FORTY DAYS

And through these days of penitence,
And through your Passiontide,
Forevermore, in life and death,
O Lord, with us abide.

Abide with us, that when this life
Of suffering is past
An Easter of unending joy
We may obtain at last
                                     A sermons follows.
THE KING OF LOVE MY SHEPHERD IS
The King of love my shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never.
I nothing lack if I am his,
And he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow,
My ransomed soul he leadeth;
And where the verdant pastures grow,
With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed,
But yet in love he sought me;
And on his shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill,
With thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spreadst a table in my sight;
Thine unction grace bestoweth;
And oh, what transport of delight
From thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all my length of days,
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
Within thy house forever.
THE NICENE CREED

Celebrant: Let us confess with our mouths what we believe in our hearts with the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God,
 the Father, the Almighty,
 maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, visible and invisible.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
 the only-begotten Son of God,
 eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
 true God from true God,
 begotten, not made,
 of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
 and was made man.
 For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
 On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
 he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father, [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
✠ We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
O Almighty God, you pour out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from
coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in
truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the
effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which
were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their
perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

Prayers or requests for prayers may be offered during this time. Please mute your computer after praying.

Increase, O God, the spirit of neighborliness among us, that in peril we may uphold one another, in suffering tend to one another, and
in homelessness, loneliness, or exile befriend one another. Grant us brave and enduring hearts that we may strengthen one another,
until the disciplines and testing of these days are ended, and you again give peace in our time; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ went about doing good, and healing all manner of sickness and disease among the
people: Continue in our hospitals his gracious work among us especially in this time of global pandemic; console and heal the sick;
grant to the physicians, nurses, and assisting staff wisdom and skill, diligence and patience; prosper their work, O Lord, and send down
your blessing upon all who serve the suffering; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
O God, whose fatherly care reaches to the ends of the earth: We ask you graciously to behold and bless those we love who
are now absent from us during these days of separation and distancing. Defend them from all dangers of soul and body,
and grant that both they and we, drawing nearer to you, may be bound together by your love, in the communion of your
Holy Spirit and in the fellowship of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

Almighty God, whose Son had nowhere to lay his head: Grant that all those who are living alone may not be lonely in their
solitude, but that, following in his steps, they may find fulfillment in loving you and their neighbors; through Jesus Christ
our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

Prayers or requests for prayers may be offered during this time. Please mute your computer after praying.

Heavenly Father, help us to entrust our loved ones to your care. Though sorrow darkens our lives, help us to look up to
you, remembering the cloud of witnesses by which we are surrounded. And grant that we on earth, rejoicing ever in your
presence, may share with them the rest and peace which your presence gives; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.

Most loving Father, you will us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on
the One who cares for us. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal
life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested unto us in your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Leader: Lord, in your mercy.
People: Hear our prayer.
THE PEACE

Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And with your spirit.

                                PREFACE TO SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

The Celebrant continues:

As St. Paul has said: “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven
and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with
power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you,
being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth
and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be
filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we can ask or imagine, according to his
power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever
and ever. ✠ Amen. (Ephesians 3:14-21)

                                          THE LORD’S PRAYER

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed
be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
THE AGNUS DEI (All singing)

Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, grant us Your peace.

                                          THE ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

Celebrant: The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, because, if you confess with your mouth that
Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:8-9)

Let us pray: Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love you above all
things, and I desire to possess you within my soul, and since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I
beseech you to come spiritually into my heart.I ✠ unite myself to you, together with all your faithful people,
gathered around every altar of your Church, and I embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Never
permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Silence is kept. Silently read and reflect on this prayer or otherwise meditate on Christ’s suffering and victory on your behalf and his
                                                               spiritual presence.

                                                      THE ANIMA CHRISTI

Let us prayer: Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water
from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within thy
wounds hide me. Permit me not to be separated from thee. From the wicked foe defend me. In the hour of
my death call me, and bid me come to thee, that with thy saints I may praise thee for ever and ever. Amen.
ABIDE WITH ME Words: Henry Lyte
                                                          Music: Justin Smith

Abide with me; falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers, fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, abide with me.

Thou on my head, in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, though I oft left Thee,
On to the close Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence, every passing hour.
What but Thy grace, can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory?
I triumph still, abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross, before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, Lord, abide with me.
THE BLESSING

Celebrant: The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And peace of
God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love
of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
WE WILL FEAST IN THE HOUSE OF ZION Words & Music: Sandra McCracken

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things, we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the LORD our God
We are not consumed, by the flood
Upheld, protected, gathered up (Chorus)

In the dark of night, before the dawn
My soul, be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long?
Oh God of Jacob, be my strength (Chorus)

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed
You are the Faithful one
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom. (Chorus)
THE DISMISSAL

Celebrant: Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set
your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your
life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear
with him in glory.

People: Thanks be to God.
