                              August 29th, Anno Domini 2021

PRELUDE— Performed by Mrs. Pa Hallman

GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

                                     CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
INVOCATION
The sign of the cross can be made in remembrance of bap sm.

Our beginning is made in the Name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy
        Spirit!
        Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just,
will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8–9

Silence for re ec on on God’s Word and for self-examina on.

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
        Most merciful God,
we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways
to the glory of your holy Name.

Amen.

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake
forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the +
Son and of the Holy Spirit.
   Amen. John 20:19–23

                               SERVICE OF THE WORD
KYRIE — Lord, Have Mercy Mark 10:47
In peace, let us pray to the Lord:
   Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord:
   Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for
the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord:
   Lord, have mercy.

For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to
   the Lord:
   Lord, have mercy.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
   Amen.

SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY
   The Lord be with you.
And also with you. 2 Timothy 4:22

   Let us pray.
O God, the source of all that is just and good, nourish in us every virtue and bring to
completion every good intent that we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of
good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
   Amen.
Divine Service of Word and Sacrament - THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
OLD TESTAMENT or FIRST READING
The Old Testament reading for The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost is from
   Deuteronomy, the 4th chapter.

“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do
them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the
God of your fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you,
nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I
   command you.

Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the
sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great
nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a
god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what
great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set
   before you today?

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your
eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make
them known to your children and your children's children.

This is the Word of the Lord.
   Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE or SECOND READING
The Epistle is from the 6th chapter of Ephesians.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor
of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not
wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of
evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may
be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand
therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of
Divine Service of Word and Sacrament - THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the
gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the
Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the
saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to
proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I
may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

This is the Word of the Lord.
   Thanks be to God.

PSALM 119
     Your testimonies are wonderful;
     therefore my soul keeps them.
     The unfolding of your words gives light;
it imparts understanding to the simple.

I open my mouth and pant,
because I long for your commandments.
Turn to me and be gracious to me,
as is your way with those who love your name.

Keep steady my steps according to your promise,
and let no iniquity get dominion over me.
      Redeem me from man's oppression,
that I may keep your precepts.

Make your face shine upon your servant,
      and teach me your statutes.
My eyes shed streams of tears,
because people do not keep your law.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
      and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be forever. Amen

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia! John 6:68

THE HOLY GOSPEL
The Holy Gospel, according to St. Mark, the 7th chapter.
   Glory to you, O Lord.

And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and
understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him,
but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had
entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And
he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that
whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his
heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he
said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the
heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All
these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

This is the Gospel of The Lord
   Praise to you, O Christ.

CREED
Living together in hope and trust, let us confess our faith with the words of the
             Apostles’ Creed.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty
                 maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
               born of the virgin Mary,
               suffered under Pontus Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
               He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.

                  He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

                           SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT
PREFACE
   The Lord be with you.
And also with you. 2 Timothy 4:22

   Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord. Colossians 3:1

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise. Psalm 136

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer
thanks and praise to You, almighty and merciful God. For You reveal Your glory to be
that of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, one
Lord, the one and only God, giving life to us, Your people, uniting us by one faith and
   one baptism.

Therefore, with all the faithful of every time and place, age and generation, with earth
and sea and all their creatures, with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim,
and all the company of heaven, we glorify Your Name and join their unending praise:
SANCTUS — Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of power and might:
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
   Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Isaiah 6:3; Ma hew 21:9
Hosanna is a Hebrew word of praise meaning “save us now.”

     PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom
You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be
our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the
all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gather us in the name and remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, and forgive,
renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Your Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat
His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us
together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the
marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive
our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor,
and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
        Amen.

     THE WORDS OF OUR LORD
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed,
took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it
and gave it to the disciples and said:
“Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you.
This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also, He took the cup after supper,
and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them,
saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this is the new testament in My + blood,
which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.
This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
                                                                   Ma hew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24
                                                                Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–25

LORD’S PRAYER
Gathered into one body by his Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
Our Father who art in heaven,
      hallowed be Thy name,
      Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
         as it is in heaven;

         as we forgive those
         who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
      but deliver us from evil.
   For Thine is the kingdom

There is no wiser, more fulfilling life than a life lived according to the Word
of God. We should be encouraged by this when the world tempts us to think
that the Word of God is harmful to us. Our Father loves us; so all His Word is meant to bless us.
We may have to suffer for upholding the Word of God, as St. John the Baptist did. But the cross
the Lord has for us to bear will be far better than any we would create for ourselves.

Back to School. End of Season. Preseason. Holiday Season. Grocery.
Whatever your reason for shopping, Scrip cards are available to be used to pay for your
purchases. Anyone can participate in our Nave Renovation fundraiser. Merchants return a
percentage of the face value of the scrip card for use toward the Nave Renovations. Year to date
so far, we have netted over $700 in proceeds. As the Back to School and Holiday Seasons
approach, Shop with Scrip. Even small percentages do add up quickly.
Download the new on-line app, RaiseRight, to your phone. You can use the app to order
electronic scrip cards at the checkout line of many merchants. The cost of the card is deducted
from your linked checking account, and the proceeds are deposited into Good Shepherd's account.

If you are shopping from home, remember to Smile (Amazon Smile).
Through the Amazon Smile program, 0.5% of your purchase is
donated to Good Shepherd. Register your Amazon account to
participate in the Smile Program, with Good Shepherd listed as your

                (Joan Perez/845-986-0624 & Ali Adams/845-544-1953, Coordinators)
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD – 2021 – Summer Fun Months:
This summer we will continue our collection of ANY & ALL items you may
find along your travels as every little bit helps fill a box of love. Also,
remember to keep your eyes open for the start of the school supply sales as
this is often the bulk of what is included in our boxes. Over the years we have
read stories of children having to share pencils & crayons, so imagine the
excitement of so many children receiving their own supplies! Pens, pencils,
rulers, solar calculators, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, etc, etc, etc!
Remember – No Liquids, food or war-related items allowed.
Thanks so much!
Don’t forget to call me if you want me to pick up your donations! (Joan 986-0624).

                                           (Maggie Adams, Coordinator/845-544-2030)

Sponsorship of a child through Compassion
International is an ongoing commitment. Usually children "Age Out" when they turn 18 years
old. We have sponsored Fenanois Luceno for 5 years now. He is 11 years old.
Please continue to show your support through the Change for a Chance jar and bottle returns.
These two fundraisers have allowed us to continue his support. Spare change and empty water
bottles have gone a long way in this ministry.
Thank you and God bless your generosity. Maggie Adams.
