Welcome W hether you are a regular worshipper or a first-time visitor to our 800 year-old church, we are glad you are here with us at Great St Mary’s for Easter Day. If this is your first time here, please introduce yourself to a minister after the service. We’d love to get to know you better. Wherever you are on your journey with God, do know that you are welcome here at Great St Mary’s, today and every day. We are a diverse community, from many countries and backgrounds, and we are delighted you are here with us. Young people and children are especially welcome here. They have a special area of the church for prayer and quiet play at the front on the left, and, during the readings, sermon, and prayers, have their own exploration of the Word in St Andrew’s Chapel. We ask that children are accompanied by a parent at all times. The Gathering Introit Hymn Please stand, as you are able, as we sing We three kings of Orient are, We come to bearing gifts we traverse afar worship God field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star: O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. The Presentation of the Gifts The traditional gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh are now offered at the Crib At the offering of Gold the Vicar, presiding, says. Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe: to you be praise and glory for ever! As gold in the furnace is tried and purified seven times in the fire, so purify our hearts and minds that we may be a royal priesthood acceptable in the service of your kingdom. All: Blessed be God for ever. Everyone sings Born a king on Bethlehem plain, gold I bring to crown him again, king for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign. 3
At the offering of Incense Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe: to you be praise and glory for ever! As our prayer rises up before you as incense, so may we be presented before you with penitent hearts and uplifted hands to offer ourselves in your priestly service. All: Blessed be God for ever. Everyone sings Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a deity nigh; prayer and praising, all men raising, worship him, God most high. At the offering of Myrrh Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe: to you be praise and glory for ever! As you give medicine to heal our sickness and the leaves of the tree of life for the healing of the nations, so anoint us with your healing power that we may be the first-fruits of your new creation. All: Blessed be God for ever. Everyone sings Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb: O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Glorious now behold him arise, king and God and sacrifice. Heaven sings: ‘Alleluia’; ‘Alleluia,’ the earth replies: O star of wonder.... 4

The Collect of the Day The president introduces a period of silent prayer O God, who by the leading of a star manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Our prayers are gathered up. mercifully grant that we, who know you now by faith, may at last behold your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All: Amen. The Liturgy of the Word Reading Isaiah 60.1-6 We hear and A Please sit for the reading. think about rise, shine; for your light has come, God’s Word and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 7
The Gradual Hymn Please stand, as you are able. ‘Glory to God!’ all heav’n with joy is ringing; angels proclaim the gospel of Christ’s birth ‘Glory to God!’ and still their song is bringing good news of God incarnate here on earth. Lowly in wonder shepherds kneel before him, no gift to bring save love of heart and mind. Come like those shepherds, sing his praise, adore him, a babe so weak, yet Saviour of mankind. Humble, yet regal, wise men kneel before him, gold, incense, myrrh, their gifts to Christ they bring: come like those wise men, sing his praise, adore him a babe so poor and modest, yet a King. Though now no crib or cradle is concealing Jesus our Lord in that far-distant shrine, Christ at each Eucharist is still revealing his very self in forms of bread and wine. John E. Bowers b1923 Tune Highwood R R Terry 1865-1938 Gospel Reading Matthew 2.1-12 We remain standing. Al - le - lu - ia, al - le - lu - ia, al - le - lu - ia. I n the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” ’ Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been Glo warned in a dream not - ry to you O to return to Herod, they left for Lord. their own country by another road. Deacon: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you O Christ. Address The Revd Helen Orr, Associate Priest The Creed Please stand, as you are able. We affirm We believe in one God, our faith in the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, God, Father, Son and Holy of all that is, seen and unseen. Spirit. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary 9
and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. When He is King, they will clothe Him in gravesheets, Myrrh for embalming, and wood for a crown, He that lies now in the white arms of Mary Sleeping so lightly on Bethlehem Down. Amen Closing Hymn Please stand, as you are able. Please turn to face the cross as the procession passes. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining; low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine, gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure: richer by far is the heart’s adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
