PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION MARCH 28, 2021 A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Most Holy Name Catholic Church, Garfield, NJ “Even though I should have to die with you I will not deny you. And they all spoke similarly. Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter, James and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch.’ He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed.” Following the last supper, we join the three disciples and Jesus in the garden. We hear His prayer as the apostles fall asleep. The hurt of the betrayal, soon to be followed by the denial filled the heart of Jesus. We are present to support and console Him. Yet all which takes place is to comfort, console and save us. We move from sorrow to gratitude for what the Lord did and does for us today. The Christ who suffered for us, suffers in His people today. May we find comfort, but also act to ease the hurts of others near and far. Jesus, save us. As we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we are reminded that Lent is coming to a close and the Resurrection is nearing. In one week, we will celebrate Easter Sunday. Pray that the Lord allows you to accompany him serenely during these Easter mysteries and you may emerge from them renewed in faith, hope and charity. The truth behind the tradition of bearing palms today goes to the story of Palm Sunday, when the people heard that Christ was coming and “they took out palm branches and went out to meet him and cried out ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, [even] the king of Isra- el.’” (John 12:13). It was a tradition to spread palms before a king as he processed into his city. It was a way to welcome him, to show him glory and homage. Thus, Christ, the true King, was wel- comed into Jerusalem. Meet Me in the Desert Lord of Lent, Lord of Easter, as you went into the desert so do I follow putting aside that which distracts me grabs at me falsely claims me. To search inside to confront myself my best, my worst, my good works and my sins. And each time, I find you there to call to me again with words of challenge and words of mercy. And as I fall to my knees, in prayer, in fasting in sacrifice and penitence somehow, you have it in yourself to reach out and gently lift me to renew me to claim me as nothing of this world can claim me. Meet me in the desert, Lord. Claim me anew. Amen. Copyright © 2021, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC.
