The Church of Saint Roch, Oxford, MA DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 11, 2021 My Dear Parishioners, As you can tell from the cover of our weekly bulletin we are observing today as Divine Mercy Sunday. It was one of the great gifts that Pope St. John Paul gave the Church when he drew attention to the writings of St. Faustina and the private revelations that our Lord made to her about the immense ocean of mercy that is available to all who turn to Him with contrition and remorse. The Lord told St. Faustina “The greater the sinner the greater right does that person have to mercy.” I have always found great comfort and encouragement in the abundant promises of mercy. I have to tell you how deeply I was moved by the number of people who came on Tuesday of Holy Week to our communal penance service. Myself and the two visiting priests were busy earing confessions for two hours. The Holy Spirit was truly preparing many people encounter the Risen Christ this Easter. Our good God is never outdone in generosity. All of Holy Week this year was saturated with grace and many, many blessings. Thanks to the efforts of so many we were able to gather this year safely and prayerfully and I think maybe because of the pandemic, more focused and attentive to suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord. We are the recipients of mercy, oh yes, but at the same time we ourselves need to be the agents of mercy to others. I am proposing a way that we can carry out the corporal works of mercy in spite of the restrictions we now must live with. In years past St. Roch’s has enthusiastically participated in the Baby Bottle Fundraiser in support of Visitation House. The money raised is very much needed at this time. It will be used to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty and shelter the homeless. At Visitation House we continue to take in women who have become homeless, largely due to their pregnancies. They made themselves vulnerable for the sake of their babies. This year I am proposing a Virtual Baby Bottle Drive. It costs $98 a day to feed, nurture and educate each of the expectant moms. The next two weeks there will be someone at a table by the entrance passing out a Visitation House envelope rather than the baby bottle. You are being asked to make some sacrifice and put some money aside between now and Mother’s Day, May 9th, and then mail that envelope directly to Visitation House. There will be a flyer in next week’s bulletin that will help you understand the reasons the funds are so much needed presently. Let us continue to love and pray for one another Fr. Roy The Divine Mercy message is as simple as ABC. Ask for Mercy—repenting of sin we ask God to pour His Mercy on us and the whole world. Be Merciful. God wants us to let His Mercy flow through us to others. Completely trust Jesus, the more we open ourselves to Him with trust, the more we receive. On this Sunday a plenary indulgence is given to anyone who goes to Holy Communion and repents freeing your soul from any attachment to sin, receives the Sacrament of Penance within 20 days and prays for the intentions of the Holy Father. This indulgence is a remission of the entire temporal punishment for sin, which would other- wise have to be purified in purgatory. 4
