Kerala Message from CHAIRMAN Message Greetings We are pleased to release the April 2020 to September 2020 issue of “Kerala Personnel e-News Letter”. Many unexpected changes happened in our Life as well as challenges in our profession since March 2020 due to the outbreak of the Pandemic – Covid19 across the globe. As far as NIPM is concerned, the term of the present Executive Committee of Kerala Chapter was over on 30th June 2020 and the new team was supposed to take over from July 2020. The National Council Elections were also due after June 2020. Unfortunately, the spread of the Pandemic compelled everyone to live with the situation and ultimately, NIPM National Council had to take a decision to postpone the Biennial Elections to the National Council for One Year and continue in office on Administrative roll only, without getting involved in any major policy decisions. National Council also directed all Chapters to follow the decision to postpone the Biennial Elections and directed the Chapter Executive Committees to continue in office for another year more. Accordingly, the Kerala Chapter Executive Committee in their meeting unanimously decided to postpone its Biennial Election Process also for One Year and the next election for the term 2021-2023 will be held based on the Voter's List being published by National Council as on 31st March 2021. During the Lockdown period, our office functioning was also affected to some extent and we managed functioning of the office with our staff partially working from office and partially from home. It is a matter of pride for the Kerala Chapter that we were the first among all the NIPM Chapters in the country to organize regular Webinars from April 1, 2020 to keep the members update on various topics. Other Chapters only followed us subsequently after we had done a few Webinars. This initiative was taken up and implemented by young and active HR Tech Committee Members, under the guidance of our two Vice Chairmen and Hon. Secretary. We have organized 26 such Webinars on different topics and Talks by eminent speakers, as part of our Knowledge Sharing Program. The Webinar included an Interactive Session with the Hon'ble Minister for Labour & Excise Sri T.P. Ramakrishnan. Lawgorithm is another unique Program on Indian Labour Laws conceptualised by the Kerala Chapter and a great initiative by the younger generation members of the HR Tech Committee. As part of this #Intern2learn, an Internship / Live Projects for Up-skilling through online classes and Certifications for Management Students, who are one of the worst hit during this challenging environment of Covid19, was organised. We had participation from other States even for this programme. 3
Message from CHAIRMAN During the Covid19 period we have completed our Annual Audit and released our Audited Balance Sheet for the FY 2019-2020. We have also conducted our Annual General Body Meeting for the year 2019-2020 on 22nd August 2020 through Virtual Mode, to adopt our Annual Report / Audited Balance Sheet etc., as per directives of our National Council. A major area we are lagging is mobilization of Membership for which I request all our existing Members to at least introduce One New Member every year to NIPM fold. Since the Associate Membership Category has been abolished by the National Council by amending the Constitution, I would request all former Associate Members to apply for new Corporate or Life Memberships and remain in NIPM fold. As you are aware, NIPM National Council has introduced e-Voting system from next Biennial Election onwards to National Council as well as Chapter Executive Committees. NC has requested all Members to Login NIPM Website and update their profile to get voting rights. I understand from National Council that about 50% members have not yet updated their profile so far. This is a major concern and needs immediate attention by our Members. All members are once again requested to Login NIPM NC Website and update their Profile immediately. We have received tremendous support from all Members and Well-wishers for organizing our activities, though the situation was negative and compelled people to stay at home. On behalf of the Executive Committee, I take this opportunity to express sincere Thanks and Appreciation to all Members and Well- wishers who are supporting us in our endeavors and request support in future too. With Regards, K. Lal John Chairman-NIPM Kerala Chapter 4
Kerala Message from EDITOR’S DESK Message Dear professional colleagues, We are pleased to present before you another issue of our “e-News Letter”. For the last more than six months, the entire world was in great crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has made not only a global health crisis, but also an unprecedented socio-economic crisis. Initially, we were expecting that this crunch would be over in a short time, but with the number of cases being reported every day, the complete resolution of this issue is still a hope. Our normal activities were also drastically affected by the spread of this pandemic as well as the restrictions imposed to control the same. However, instead of being idle we preferred to be pro-active and ventured in to actions. The series of webinars was an outcome of the same. Other major initiative was "#Intern2learn- Lawgorithm" which has also got vide acceptance and appreciation. Let us strive to contribute our best towards humanity at this critical time when it needs leadership and solidarity to defeat the pandemic. With warm regards, N. V. Ravidev Editor & Hon. Treasurer 5

Wither Laws, wither Labour... and Economy? Anish Aravind Secretary NIPM Kerala Chapter Entrepreneur, Human Brain Enthusiast | HR, HCM, People & Internet Strategy Professional | Co-Founder @SS Consulting & M/A/R/S Kerala Early in May 2020, The Economist made a general statement - that Covid-19 has also enabled anyone with an agenda to use the virus as an excuse / capsule to propel that agenda into reality. Pretty sweeping remark but a dangerous one at that. It took me another week to connect to the seriousness of that remark. The following national events helped in making that connection. The plight of Migrant labourers in India - these daily wage earners were the ones who were impacted by the hastily designed / announced lockdown. Families are forced to walk 100's of miles to reach their ancestral homes in their villages. The response from business owners - starting from India's Silicon Valley, Bengaluru in Karnataka: So an Industry association has lobbied and succeeded in preventing the migrant labourers from exercising their choice, to return to their homes after being locked down for over a month without food / money. The response from national Industry bodies - Suspending labour laws for 3 years!!! Response from some state Governments - notably the one of the states with top 5 population gures in the nation. So - Labour laws related to settling industrial disputes, occupational safety, health and working conditions of workers, and those related to trade unions, contract workers, and migrant labourers will be defunct for next 3 years if this ordinance becomes a law. As a student, Learner, designer and practitioner of HR for enabling business results via people since 1997, I'm worried. A look back at history of Labour laws will help one connect to the reasons for my worry. Post Industrial revolution, in the 18th and 19th Century conditions of workers had reached a stage so bad that it paved the way for establishment of laws and regulation aimed to protect the rights of workers across the world - leading to 1st May being declared as Labour day. Read about this and the impact of recent amendments here. In our country too - Most of the labour laws came out of HR / People policy manual of some of the forward thinking business owners - speci cally JRD Tata - from the Tata Steel days - where will the recent changes take us? Is this a good time for such diversions? What prevents the leadership role players to design for collaboration - using empathy as a base and forge win-Win situations for humans as an anti-dote that will revive the economy, battled down by Covid-19? Learning to impart learning.. Radhika Krishnan Senior Consultant, SS Consulting Socrates said, "Know thyself." I say, "Know thy users." And guess what? They don’t think like you do."- Joshua Brewer Learning is a continually evolving process. The advent of technology and the accessibility to abundance of information in multiple forms is changing the landscape of learning. With the availability of multiple digital tools in hand, to shorter attention span and freedom to switch instantly from one learning form to the other, learners learn very differently now as opposed to the traditional learning approaches. To put in a nutshell, here is what learners are looking for - personalized and bite-sized learning nuggets that are fun, interactive and visually stimulating, which are available at the tip of their ngers to learn on the go! Hence, these are exciting as well as challenging times for the instructional designers to design contents that are equally informative and engaging. You will come across a plethora of instructional design models as well digital learning forms, that you can leverage, on the internet. Hence, I will not delve deep into that. What would like to share with you are three important tips from my instructional design experience that I believe remain CONSTANT even while the learning landscape changes. 1. EMPATHIZE with your audience - you are the subject matter expert, not them. Make early assessments on what level of understanding your audience is at and design accordingly. 2. Relatable & practical EXAMPLES are the best ways to retain learning and obtain active participation. 3. Explain the JOURNEY/EVOLUTION of the concept that you are talking about, which helps audience to connect better to the WHY, the present and the future. Ensure to focus on how best to connect with your learners. Classroom or digital, long or short, audio or visual, know thy users! They don't think like you. 16
