IN SPORTS~ 1966 JUVENILES SASKATCHEWAN BOUND Hamiota Echo- August 31st, 1966– Baseball Provincial Win Seasons of frustration in hockey and baseball competition alike came to an end as Hamiota edged the South End Sioux of Winnipeg 1-0 in 10 innings to capture the Provincial Juvenile Baseball title and the right to represent the province at Regina in interprovincial play. Many of the team had been finalists in previous competition but had fallen just short of the trophies. Fans may follow the teams progress by tuning CKCK Regina on your radio dial. Rick Robinson pitched a masterful game giving up 3 or possibly 4 hits over the 10 inning route. He struck out 12 and walked 2. Rick set the Sioux down in order in the 1, 2, 8 and 10th innings, striking out 3 of the last 4 batters to face him. It was the 7th inning before a Sioux reached 3rd. The Sioux threatened in the 9th with runners on second and third with only one out but were retired without damage on an infield out to second and the strikeout. Hamiota threatened in the third inning with runners on second and third but failed to score when a runner was hit by the batted ball. Hamiota nearly scored in the 6th when after Bill Thompson flied out, Mel Smith was safe on an error and Ellis Woods and Rick Robinson made hits. Again in the 7th Hamiota threatened as Dick Coombs led off with a hit and reached 3rd Earl Mathison’s sacrifice and Denis Sparling’s hit but the venture failed. In the 10th with one out Mel Smith popped up the ball was played by the pitcher, first baseman and the catcher. The catcher drew an error on the play. When they finally got their hands on the ball, Mel was on second, but Rick Robinson lashed a long fly on the first pitch to the fence in left field, that the fielder couldn’t hold while Mel scampered home with the run. The team consists of Dennis Sparling and Bill Thompson from Oak River, Mel Smith, Ellis Woods, Rick Robinson, Lee Pollock, Earl and Murray Mathison, Dick and Don Coombs, Roger Stewart, sidelined with an appendectomy, and Bob Gilbert lately moved to Nipawin. Nelson Woods and Glen Stewart coach the team, Nellie expects to pick up Lou Morrison of Hartney and Mark Fisher of Riverside for interprovincial play. 1

HAMIOTA OAKVIEW SENIORS Hopefully everyone has got through the Christmas season and into the New Year with little difficulties. December has come and gone and we have been fortunate to have such a mild winter. Try to stay warm everyone and remember to dress for the conditions. With the many restrictions due to Covid-19 and the weather. Please remember to check in on your neighbors and family members. Particularly the ones who are on their own, or are not good with technology. These next few months are generally hard for many people and a simple telephone call or a written note can go along way to relieving some of that feeling of isolation. Try to make a simple call every week to 5 people that you may not normally talk to. Just to say hello. It will make their day much brighter and our community connection much stronger. As we start the New Year a lot of people are cleaning out the old to make room for the new. As you do that, please keep in mind our senior’s office. We are a non-profit organization and look for the generosity of donations from those around us. We appreciate donations such as mobility aids for our lending program, any and all office supplies, or monies that can help with our summer student program and keep the office operational. If you think you have something to donate please stop by or call the office. I would like to personally thank the Country Crocus Bakery and the various businesses and organizations in the area who have stepped up to make these trying times a little less difficult for the seniors and shut ins. They have been a ray of sunshine in a very trying year. If you are a group or individual and have something you would like to share or present to seniors please contact the office. From music to crafting to presenting information, we appreciate anything you are willing to share. The Hamiota Seniors Office is here for our seniors, you can call or email at any time. Whether you are a senior or a concerned family member or friend, you can inquire about resources at any time. Always open for a friendly visit or conversation, happy to help however we can! If you need any information, please contact the office: Karen Johnson – Seniors Resource Coordinator Phone #: 204-764-2658 E-mail : hamiotaseniorsinc@gmail.com Location : 166 Lilac Ave, Suite #30 in Park Residence 4
