PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello Members, We’ve continued to enjoy the last of summer and early autumn, I trust you made the most of it over the Easter break. I would like to thank all those who turned out to the Special General Meeting on March 18th regarding the redevelopment. The decision to go ahead was approved, and we are hoping to start demolition early in November. We are looking forward to the build, and thank you for your support. On the 1st of April the club opened at 8:00am for the Parker v Joseph boxing match. About 450 turned out to watch, with 150 in for breakfast. A great start for Easter Sunday, but unfortunately we witnessed Parkers first ever defeat. The Crusaders had a good win against the Lions in South Africa, and the Warriors are going well, winning 4 games on the trot. Hopefully it continues. Cricket has wrapped up now, with a successful year for the Blackcaps. In entertainment news – a couple of upcoming ticketed shows – Neil Diamond tribute on the 27th and Anthony’s Retro Rockin on May 12th. As well as our Saturday house bands all month long. Hope to see you around the club. Regards, Kevin Cole Eddie Low takes the stage for an impromptu song at the Presidents Night.

Our Card Section Members are enjoying our section activities since restarting over the last 2 months. Just to recap on last month’s report, we had a team of 8 drive up to Blenheim (thankfully, Kaikoura Coast road open the day before) to play in the Clubs NZ South Island Steinlager Euchre Tournament up at Blenheim on 4th March. It was a well run tournament by their club, 20 clubs from around South Island participating. We finished a close 7th as a team score. We held our own section 6 handed tournament on Sat. 10th March. This was such an enjoyable day by those who played.
The photo shows the best top scorers on the day. 1st Jeanette Hosking, Cheryl Gianelly and Jimmy Patu The rest of us others in photo, we were 2nd and 3rd.
We wish our fellow Hornby Crib Section, hosting the 2018 Crib Nationals Tournament on Sat 14th-Sun 15th April, a successful Tournament, Always great to share our club facilities with members from our other New Zealand Clubs. We have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) for our Cards section on Thursday 19th April at 7.30pm and chance to have friendly 6 handers with supper to follow. We urge all members to attend. Any concerns how we run our section during year need to be voiced that night, or we continue as we do best for our section members. It’s been great to welcome our new members that have joined us over the last few weeks, It can be quite daunting coming along first time, but I hope you feel okay once playing with us all. So just a reminder our Hornby Members that have played for years n years..... When we have a new player, you may need to slow the game down and just give friendly guidance if need be!!! Don't scare them off - We want these new members to keep coming back! So see you all at 7.15 pm on Thursday nights. Regards, Lorraine Cole CRIB It is a very sad month for our Section with the passing of Bob Lavender. Always a friendly team mate or opponent, ready with a smile and a chuckle, a real gentleman who we all looked forward to playing with. Our thoughts go out to Brenda and her family. Bob will be greatly missed. Peg on forever! Our section is looking forward to April with the Nationals being held at Hornby, with approx. 150 players attending from all around New Zealand. Good luck to all of our players. Enjoy yourselves and play well. Hopefully we will have some great results to report on in the next newsletter. April is also our AGM for the Crib Section. It’s been a successful year for the section and its members. Thanks to Dianne and Ricky for their leadership and to the whole committee for their efforts over the year. A job well done and we look forward to yet another successful year. We continue to have good numbers each Wednesday. The cards are competitive with different winners each week. We have also introduced a pair’s night once a month, with team Ricky and Gina winning our first one. Any Club member wishing to join our friendly Section is more than welcome to come along, 7 pm every Wednesday night to partake in one of the greatest card games there is. All the best - The Cribbage Crew
DARTS Welcome back to another year and what a great start to the year returning from the South Islands with the silverware for the cabinet (4 in total) with Hornby in all but 1 final. It all started on the Tuesday night with the 50th Jubilee Singles, Maata won the ladies and Gary Jones was runner up in the men’s. Then it was the Mixed Pairs on Wednesday with Mark J & Raewyn getting runner up South Island Mixed Pairs and Lucas & Mel getting 3rd equal and Warren & Vernaleigh getting 5th equal. On Thursday it was the Ladies & Men’s pairs with Maata & Raewyn winning the ladies pairs, and Warren & Craig getting runner up in the men’s pairs. On Friday it was the Ladies singles with Raewyn winning. Friday night it was the youths with Jordan coming runner up in the final. Saturday was the Men’s singles with Craig getting 5th equal. Warren got the Men’s highest finish with a “170” and Hornby had to share the aggregate with Kaiapoi with 5.37. Saturday was a great night with the announcement of the South Island team and Hornby got 6 players in the team well done Warren, Craig, Vernaleigh, Sarah, Raewyn & Maata. I would just like to say how proud I was of all the Hornby WMC & MSA dart players and supporters that attended the tournament in Oamaru and that you all did us proud. The winter round starts on the 4th of April and we have 8 teams, good luck to you all. Yours at tops – John Poole
GOLF Hi everyone. A wet day greeted us for our game at Kaiapoi on the 11th February and 14 hardy golfers went to battle the elements. This was the first round of the Sisson and Staff trophies, with the winner for the men being B Stringer with a nett 69 and the ladies winner was P Brewer with a nett 73. Congratulations goes to B MacKey for his Hole in one on the 13th, unusual shot but finished perfectly. Nearest to the pin was M James on the 1st who also picked up the prize for the jack pot hole. Our game at Burnham was cancelled; also we had ten men away playing in the nationals. The next game was at Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club on 18th March for the Sexton trophy, this is a nett game with the pairs drawn after the game. The winning pair was R Hampton & S Stevens with a nett 141. Our next game is on 22 April at Templeton against Ashburton for the Ashorn trophy. Anyone wishing to get back into golf or give it a go and have some fun, contact Steve Stevens on 3446332. All the best, Steve OUTDOOR BOWLS Our March game looked in doubt with the weather not flash during the week and again on Saturday night but Sunday turned on one of the best days for bowls, we have had this season. The Webster Trophy played between the men and ladies of the section saw the men narrowly defeat the ladies by one win. Les Wilson’s team with Alf Shearman, Graham Payne and Peter Sutcliffe set up the win for the men winning both their games. Our next game, a bus trip to Dunsandel is on the 15th April please place your name on the game sheet if you wish to play. Robin Leary - Chairperson
MIDWEEK BOWLS Numbers attending our Tuesday afternoon bowls continue to be very pleasing. We have recently welcomed two new members and the return of another who had been away for a couple of years. The BBQ we held on 27 February was a very enjoyable occasion and on that note we would like to thank the restaurant staff for the help and lovely spread they provided for us. Our AGM is on 10 April and we would like as many members as possible to attend. New members are always welcome. Regards, Tony McBride POOL Our Interclub Season kicked off on Tuesday 20th March for Premiers and Div. 1, Wednesday 21st March for Div. 2 & 3. Our season is already in full swing with a few warm up matches planned prior to Interclub starting and our tournament calendar is already underway. The CNZ 8 Ball Tournaments started in the South Island with an open singles event at the Timaru RSA. This event saw the retirement of Garry Simpson from running tournaments. He will be a big loss to CNZ 8 Ball and especially South Canterbury 8 Ball. Garry is a valued member of Hornby Silver and will continue playing for Hornby. The Final of this event was an all Hornby affair with Barry Henderson and Malcolm Pollock fighting it out with Malcolm coming out on top. Since an open Singles tournament at New Years, the Pot Black Challenge Open Singles at Formally the Blackball Hilton and this one, Malcolm has won all 3. A sensational effort with some very impressive performances. We have run our first in-house tournament for 2018 on the 25th February, it was the Hubbard Shield – Drawn Pairs. There were some very good pairings and the final was between Paul Morris & Mike Jeffery playing John Gower & Jimmy Bird. It was an impressive display of pool from both pairings with Paul & Mike coming out on top winning 4 – 2. It is great to see many new players that have joined the section this year and it looks as though our interclub teams will be quite strong.
We will have 8 teams this year, Premier. Gold, Green and Silver. Div.1 Yellow Div. 2 Black & Miscues Div. 3 Diamonds & Blues Good luck to all teams. Regards, Allan Cowan FISHING The highlight of the past month has undoubtedly been the Clubs NZ South Island trout tournament hosted by the Cromwell Town and Country Club. Thursday 22nd March saw 29 of our members assemble at the Central Gateway motel in Cromwell, anticipating what proved to be a fantastic weekend. Friday was spent, by most, checking out the most likely fishing spots on the local lakes and rivers before the tournaments’ start at 17:00. Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny, but cool, making for a great fishing day. It was pleasing to see 159 entries this year with 95 fish being weighed in. Hornby weighed in 12 fish but unfortunately none could match the eventual 3.72kg winner landed by Rene Tamblyn from the Cromwell Club. We did manage to come 3rd in the aggregate however. The tournament concluded on Saturday evening with the prize giving followed by a delightful meal. We now look forward to Rangiora RSA next year with Gore T & C running the event in 2020. Don’t forget the Jack Elcock @ Lake Brunner on the 13th & 14th of April, This promises to be another great event, with a contingent from Rangiora RSA joining us this year. Would all section members and intending members please pencil our AMG date, 18th April, in your diaries. The positions of Chairperson, Secretary and Charter Convener are becoming vacant this year. Please consider putting your name forward for these roles. Don’t forget that our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Club, all Club member are welcome to come along Tight Lines- Denys Street
TABLE TENNIS Interclub competition begins early April and we are hoping to enter the same amount of teams as per last year, eight. Club night is Tuesday nights at 7.30pm with Social Table Tennis every Tuesday morning 10am-12pm in the Sports Hall. New members are always welcome. Regards, John TRAVEL 5 DAYS IN NAPIER Well the trip to Napier was off to a slow start but soon the close knit team of 23 really got into having fun. The slow start occurred due to an early morning text received from Air New Zealand advising the flight due to board at 8.30am had been cancelled. Wow I thought what to do with 23 members. Air NZ very quickly had us sorted to fly to Auckland at 9.30am then down to Napier. We boarded our plane and sat on the tarmac for approximately 45 minutes, the reason being they were waiting for a final passenger to board, unfortunately they never did board so all the luggage had to be off loaded, they then discovered the We made it to Napier! luggage wasn’t there anyway. We arrived in time to board plane for Napier. We arrived to beautiful weather and the friendliest of staff at the Quality Inn four hours later than scheduled time. This was not a problem as the rooms were all ready and the afternoon was set down as free time until 6pm when we met for drinks and dinner.
Thursday was early pickup with our coach to be driven out to the loading bay for the tractor ride along the beach to visit the gannet colony. This was a four hour exercise which brought screeches of laughter as we bumped over the rocks and along the beach with the waves breaking over us. The whole experience was very exciting and very, very interesting as our tractor driver Murray pointed out the different fault lines and the erosion of the cliffs. We then reached the end of the 9km with the chance for some to climb up the hill for a lookout. Several managed to achieve this climb, well done to those who made it. Amazing Gannet Colony Experience Then back to the tractors to return to our starting point. A very exciting and enthralling morning. The afternoon was then free time to explore personal points of interest. The evening saw members looking at different locations to relax and find a dinner venue. A large group visited the West Quay where there were several bars and restaurants.
Friday was pickup in the Vintage Cars with an interesting visit to their showroom followed by a tour around the art deco of Napier. This was enjoyed by all driving in chauffeur driven open vintage cars. We hired out six cars averaging four per car. Vintage Cars Journey In the afternoon the free time was spent with some resting up, some travelling by bus to Hastings to look around and eight drove around in a most exiting Supertrike tour. This has been voted as No. 1 on trip advisor and it certainly did thrill those of us that took the plunge. We met at 6pm for drinks and dinner at the RSA. The Ride of a Lifetime on a Supertrike!
Saturday - St Patrick’s Day What better way to start the day than with a Guinness at Murphy’s Bar in Havelock North. Great music, great Guinness, and great fun. We then travelled on to our lunch stop at “Off the Track” restaurant for lunch, before visiting three wineries for tastings. The whole area was very busy due to the National Horse of the Year show in Hastings, and the planned Neil Diamond concert which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to his ill health but lots of people still visited the town as planned. The soundshell in the evening played lots of Neil Diamond. Half a dozen of us ventured out for the evening kicking up our heels and was such fun as we laughed and danced in an amazing atmosphere made all the better by the few quick shots earlier. Sunday before departing to the airport for our homeward journey we celebrated three birthdays with cake – unusual to have three out of twenty three birthdays all on the same day. The days were enjoyed by everyone, and the most rewarding thing of all was the reservations manager informing me we were the most fun loving and easy group to have stay. She wished all groups were as easy to deal with as us. She and her staff even came out to wave us off in our coach. Thank you to you kind people for generously presenting Steve and I with the opportunity to have a night and dinner away. It really is greatly appreciated; we haven’t decided as yet where to go but will endeavour to take up the opportunity before the weather turns too sour. Next Event April 18th 2018 Wednesday - A booking has been made to visit the Kate Valley Landfill in Hurunui area. One of the employees at the Landfill will board our coach and explain how the landfill and recycling works. This will be followed by a presentation. We will then visit a couple of wineries before lunch at the Old Leithfield Pub. Please note the lunch will not be until 2pm so you may wish to have a good breakfast. NEXT MEETING IS THE AGM ON 16TH APRIL 7PM IN THE ALPINE ROOM Notice will be on board shortly for nominations for the committee Warm regards, Lyn Wright
