As we watch the dawn- ing of 2021, we hope that we will soon see greater physical safety, fortune, and peace of mind for all. Our greatest wish for the new year is that you will have good health, prosperity and joy and that we will all soon be back together in our lovely community of artists. Most of all, iwe hope we will all find ways to be productive and make the most of with the opportunities we do have. Best wishes for a Happy New Year! Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Online
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Jeff Jensen, SWS President Happy New Year everyone!!! As I write this, the holiday season is coming to a close and the end of one of the most challenging years in our nation’s history is ending. A new beginning is just around the corner. A vaccine for the Covid-19 virus is being distributed as rapidly as possible, and we are on the verge of a new Presidential Administration taking office January 20, 2021. There is hope that our new normal is not very far away. 2021 promises to be a year of profound change and if you are like me, change can be a good thing!! One thing is for certain however…your SWS Officers and Board of Directors are doing everything we can to continue Santa (AKA Jeff Jensen) presiding to bring value to our membership in new and creative ways, over the December SWS Board Meeting and provide you with the leadership to keep SWS one of the strongest watercolor societies in the nation. We hope that when government restrictions ease in relation to the pandemic, we will once again be able to hold our monthly meetings in person. Till then, we will continue to utilize the ZOOM platform to bring us together. Our January meeting will bring together four of our “member artists” for a lively panel discussion led by our moderator, Jonesy McConnell. Details will be e-mailed to you via Constant Contact and the Meeting I.D. number and the Password provided will be required to join. This is different from the single “click to join” that we have provided in the past. This is being done to keep our meeting secure and as safe as possible. The I.D. and Password will be sent to you via Constant Contact prior to the meeting. We will also be launching our new virtual “Painting of the Month” contest! Specific details are being e-mailed to you and are also discussed in this newsletter. We look forward to our great artists coming in 2021: Frank Eber in February, Carl Dalio in March, and Richard Sneary in April. The sign-up information and actual dates are on the website. Also, please remember that we will be having our annual fundraiser in May. It will most likely be held online again and promises to give you an opportunity to bid on some wonderful art and merchandise at some amazing prices!!! Ask yourself what your goals for your artwork will be in 2021. How many shows do you plan to enter? Have you signed up for any of the remaining three workshops? How many paintings do you hope to complete? I have set a goal to paint at least a little bit every day! Consistency and frequency can be the keys to success!!! I wish you all a New Year filed with prolific painting. Thank you for your continued trust in me this year! Wishing you lots of love, happiness, and blessings into 2021!! Jeff Jensen 2020 - 2021 President Southwestern Watercolor Society 2
ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT Jane A. Strong I remember loving to draw at an early age. As one of eight children in a middle-class family, it was a real treat to get a brand-new notebook to which I could add my drawings. Although my interest in art never completely vanished, my education followed a business centered path, and a love and talent for team sports. I never found the opportunity to develop my creative side during those years. As an adult, I pursued a challenging career in information management, eventually becoming a senior manager at a large IT company, a high powered (and highly stressful) position. Again, there was no time or place for art. However, my neglect- ed creative side somehow managed to survive, emerging right before my retirement. While looking through the latest community college brochure one day, I noticed a beginning watercolor class led by Sue Alston of Plano, Texas. I took the plunge and signed up. I was extremely fortunate that this, my first teacher, was a well-known and talented artist. Sue led my first hesitant steps back to art through the knowledge she shared and her great teaching style. Her constant positive feedback was just right for a newbie watercolorist like me. She reawakened my love of art and gave me the confidence to dive into this exciting medium. Once retired I continued painting and practicing styles to which I was drawn. I dove into art technique books and magazines with the enthusiasm of an apprentice. I began to realize that this hobby and craft could keep me challenged for a lifetime. As I gained experience and confidence, I began to study with other experts. With each workshop my exposure to new and challenging watercolor techniques grew. One of my frequent and most noteworthy instructors during this period was Jane E. Jones, a Dallas artist, who had 3
ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT developed a very challenging teaching curriculum. She exposed me to all the principles and elements of design, color concepts, structures, abstracting and experimental art, some of my favorite techniques and skills. Over the years I have benefitted from workshops with so many talented artists, including Cecy Turner, Mark Mehaffey, Mike Bailey, and Michael Holter, just to name a few. With each experience I tried to take a little of their magic and apply it to my own work. My current art teacher is Pat Kochan, a Dallas artist who constantly motivates me to try different substrates, watermedia, colors and styles. Through her guidance, I am at last developing my own personal style and artistic voice. Thanks to Pat, I currently have a love-hate relationship with yupo which has yet to resolve! Frequent travels (before 2020) provided the inspiration for my art: the people, places, architecture and cultures of our beautiful world. This year I have relied on photos and memories to inspire me. If only I could internalize all that I have learned and experienced, I would be a brilliant artist, indeed. Learning is never ending, and if I continue to be blessed with good health and creative opportunities, I know I will continue to grow in my art. I feel so fortunate to have found my lifetime avocation, and to have the time, energy, and resources to continue my art into the future. Most importantly of all, I cherish the friends I have made along this journey, who continue to motivate and inspire me. I look forward to meeting other wonderful and talented people who share my love for watercolor. 4
SWS UPCOMING EVENTS January Membership Meeting Features Panel of Artists Programming changes up a bit every January before we resume our general calendar of guest artist demonstrations in February. Last January we hosted an Artist Throwdown with four artists who came with their own compositions, painted them for 15 minutes and then passed them to the other artists to work on. At the end of the session, each artist finished up the painting they started. The resulting group paintings were then auctioned to the audience as a fundraiser. Because of the pandemic, this kind of program was not possible to do this year. Instead, the program for January of 2021 will be a panel of accomplished, award-winning SWS members who will discuss their work and answer questions about their processes and goals. The SWS Membership Meeting for January will feature artists Tom Brown, Radha Chatterjee, Trish Poup- ard, and Ron Stephens who will discuss painting and their own work. The kinds of artworks produced by these artists and their backgrounds are quite diverse, so the program should be very interesting. Tom Brown, (https://www.tombrownwatercolors.com/), is an avid outdoorsman and calls himself a storyteller so it is no surprise that he was attracted to landscapes and rural America when he began to paint seriously. Largely self-taught, he enjoys painting from nature but also paints in the studio. Radha Chatterjee, (https://www.radhachatterjeefineart.com), has been teaching art for decades in Dallas and is a former partner in the Artist’s Showplace Gallery in Dallas. She says that her art is about harmony and color. She tries to keep the pigments fresh and simultaneously experiments with value and composition. Making art is a sort of catharsis and it brings her joy and tranquility. Trish Poupard, (https://trish-poupard.format.com/), works in transperent watercolor and considers herself to be pur- ist in her materials and techniques. Her inspiration comes from photos she has taken, and she endeavors to create realistic beauty, one painting at a time. She is inspired by images she would like to see improved by the watercolor medium. 5
SWS UPCOMING EVENTS January Meeting Continued: Ron Stephens, (https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/ron-stephens), began painting in watercolor after retiring from his long career in advertising and paints non-objective paintings. He says he enjoys the challenge of not having a reference source and designing composi- tions that combine good shapes with interesting texture, line and harmonious color choices. The link to join the meeting on Zoom will be sent out during the week before the meeting on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:00 pm. The moderator, Jonesy McConnell is collecting a list of questions to ask the panel- ists on the night of the meeting. To submit yours, please email him at jcmc65art@sbcglobal.net before the meeting. Microphones for attendees will be off but additional questions can be submitted by Zoom Chat during the meeting. We hope to see you there. 6

SWS UPCOMING EVENTS Spring Workshops 2021 The pandemic continues to add a lot of uncertainty about the work- shop schedule as we move into the Spring of the year. We know who the artists will be, and the dates, and that the face-to-face workshops will be held at the Last Art Gallery in McKinney (https://www.lastartgal- lery.com/). We do not yet know which workshops will be held online or in-person. If the workshops are face-to-face, accomodations will be made to minimize risks from the pandemic. Registration for the Frank Eber workshop began on December 15. Registration for the other two Spring workshops will be open January 3. To register for the workshops, go to https://www.swswatercolor.org/ workshops. At that time, you will fill out the workshop form and make a $100 deposit to hold your seat. The balance will be due one month prior to the workshop start date in order to continue to hold the seat. Non-payment may put the reservation in jeopardy. The workshop coordinators will work with anyone who has to cancel to find a replacement. If a student cancels at least one month before the workshop start date, fees are fully refundable. If a student cancels later than one month before the workshop start date, fees are refundable less the $100 deposit. Once the workshop begins, no refunds will be given for no-shows or withdrawals. Details of the work- shop policies are available on the SWS workshop page. Watch the SCENE newsletter and the website for more information about workshops as it becomes available. The workshop schedule for the Spring, 2021 is below. For more information about the artists and the focus of their workshops check out the Workshops Page on the SWS website.
