AUSTIN PASTEL SOCIETY SEPT 2021 NEWSLETTER
Letter from the Austin Pastel Society
    President, Enid Wood, PSA,PSNM
    Dear APS Members,
I hope you and your dear ones are well and that you are staying cool, while painting
    joyfully and beautifully.

Our first meeting of the season is Sunday, September 26 at 2:30pm on Zoom. You
will receive a Zoom invitation prior to the meeting by email. This meeting features
a paint-around by APS members Anna Lisa Leal, Jody Martin and Julia Fletcher.
Paintings will be sold at a silent online auction during the meeting, with proceeds
from the sale going to the APS Scholarship Fund. Each spring APS gives a $1000
scholarship for two years to a graduating high school senior planning for a major or
minor in art at college. This year, we are searching for a new recipient. Members are
    encouraged to nominate scholarship candidates.

At our September 26 Zoom meeting, we will also begin taking registrations for our
March virtual landscape workshop with Lyn Asselta. If you must miss the meeting, you can register on the APS web-
site beginning Monday afternoon, September 27. Our Workshop Chair is Jennifer
Edwards. Please contact her if you have questions.

If you have had paintings accepted into juried exhibitions, or if you are involved in
solo shows or other exhibitions, please let our newsletter editors know. Digital imag-
es of your paintings, along with your news, are helpful for our Editors and inspiring
for everyone. The publication deadline is the
10th of the month, for the months when we hold meetings.

APS meets September, October, January, February, April, May, and June, and we
also host a free demonstration by our Exhibition Judge in March (March 13, 2022
with Lyn Asselta this season), and a holiday party in December (TBA). We hope to
meet in person in April, and have reserved Norris Conference Center in Austin for
Joycelyn Schedler’s morning workshop and our afternoon meeting. These plans are,
of course, subject to safety considerations.

The prospectus for our 2022 Annual Juried Member Exhibition, “Celebrate Pastels!”
is now available on our website. Please make a note of the dates. We will have an
1 in person show at Austin Art & Frame again this year, but have planned an on-

deadline for entries is Monday, January 3, 2022 at 11:59pm. Please start planning
your entry now. If you paint from photos, you must enter only paintings from pho-

Thank you for your continuing support of Austin Pastel Society and for encouraging
one another as we grow as artists.

To know “how” to create a painting, it’s important to know “why” you want to make

it, is an allegory on how children see differently than most adults, While the
grown ups are engrossed with something off screen, the child notices... you!
The viewer! This can also be a comment on how we are trained as we grow

how children will engage directly with strangers, and will frequently ex-
change a silent communication of emotion and expression (smile at a baby,

    Oil Painting, Pastel: Intermediate Advanced

Every professional artist says, “Work from life!” But sometimes we have no
choice. Unfortunately, photos lie to us. There are four elements to realistic
painting: shape (drawing), value, color, and edges; the problem is that even
in the best of photo references three of the four are always wrong! So, we
become very adept at copying wrong information…and it shows in our paint-
    ings!

This four-day oil and pastel workshop is for artists who are advanced begin-
ners or higher. (An advanced beginner has reasonably accurate drawing
skills and painting experience). You will learn:
    • How to take more useful photos
    • Three hacks to avoid the most egregious photo-errors
    • How to make a quick, but valuable color study
    • The best way to effectively use a photo
    • A technique to create Fechin’s broken edge effects
    • How to simplify
    • Masterful edge control
    • The key to color harmony
    • How to turn the form with temperature
William will demonstrate in both oil and pastel (a complete head study as
well as several “mini-demos” – painting eyes, painting the mouth etc. This
workshop will turbo-charge your understanding of drawing, value, color tem-
perature, edge control and – how to work from photos without looking like an

Students routinely complain, “My work looks hard and tight. I wish I could

the work of masters like Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, and Edgar De-

chose to leave out that makes the difference. In the words of C.W. Mundy,
