February 7, 2021/ Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time Page 2 FATHER’S DESK “Defining Moments” Week 6: Teachable Moments Defining Moments are short experiences, brimming with meaning; they help us to define ourselves, our world, our relationships, and our God. Over and over in Scripture, God uses specific moments to help people connect with him. Defining moments also help us to better understand ourselves – we are challenged to grow, and sometimes we are called to something new in our lives. We can also leverage defining moments to love others. Today we are speaking about teachable moments, when a life lesson is learned, or we have the opportunity to impress a value that we hold, onto others. Often teachable moments are spontaneous – we can’t plan for them. However, we can prepare for them, whether as a boss, a parent, or a leader in an organization. According to Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, after the miracle of the Multiplication of the Loaves, Jesus teaches in the synagogue in Capernaum what is commonly called the “Bread of Life Discourse.” At the end of his speech Jesus says, “Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:57-58). Jesus introduces here the idea of the Eucharist. He is saying that his very flesh is true food and drink – this is not metaphorical language. John then tells us: Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” (John 6:60). The people listening had a hard time with this teaching, and Jesus doubles down: Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life (John 6:61-63). In other words, our worldly efforts are of no avail for our soul, but Jesus gives us his flesh for our spiritual nourishment. John tells us this reaction: As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him (John 6:66). This is actually the only moment in the Gospels where people reject his teaching and walk away from Jesus, who then turns to his closest friends: Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:67-69). Jesus is so adamant on this teaching, that he is willing to lose his closest friends and associates, but thankfully Peter chooses to stick with him. This is a teachable moment for them, and for us. Typically, our core values are those priorities which we are so adamant about, that we are willing to suffer for them, in order to hold onto them or pass them on to others. In other words, standing up for these core values means that we are willing to lose money or popularity in order to uphold them. We can’t plan teachable moments, but the greatest way to prepare for teachable moments for others, is to live out these core values for the people whom we seek to influence and teach. Questions for Small Groups: 1. Do you recall any teachable moments from your youth that were impressed upon you by a parent, coach, teacher or other authority figure? If so, what were they? 2. Off the top of your head, what you say are your three core values? Why did you choose them? Where did they come from? 3. What would your family say were your three core values? Would they be the same or different? 4. What opportunities have you had or do you have to impress your values upon the people you lead or the people around you? 5. What lessons or insights have you learned from this series? With blessings, Fr. Reichlen
