Growing plants and animals can be fun, but it does take space. Interestingly, in communities throughout the country, new space is emerging. Small stores are Hobby Farms and City Gardens disappearing, to the chagrin of many, but space is appearing. The question is how communities will use this vacant space in the future. One possible outcome from the Internet shopping revolution: urban areas in cities large and small could be used for small farming. Since the 1980’s, cities have reserved green spaces for city gardening with varied success. One urban garden in Washington D.C. called North Columbia Heights Green started in the early 2000’s after the owners of a quarter-acre lot shut down their business and left it vacant. The city agreed to sell the lot to a non-profit group for one dollar, and today about 25 residents actively farm the plot, growing fresh produce for themselves and to sell at local farmers markets. Some experts say this experience could well be replicated in towns and cities as people take advantage of properties once used for shopping. Another use of land may be hobby farms, a past time once reserved for high-income people with time on their hands. With a little space, nearly anyone can raise chickens for eggs and goats for milk. Or even keep honeybees. While the average small family farm has 231 acres, it takes little more than an acre to raise chickens and a goat. This bodes the question, where will a new hobby farm or city garden crop up next? Health Corner Healthy eating is important no matter what age you are but choosing healthy snacks with high nutritional value and which also sustain your appetite can be challenging. Not all snacks are created equally and choosing food items which are nutrient-dense instead of calorie-dense is the key to snacking smart. While nutrient-dense foods are high in nutritional value and are relatively low in calories, calorie-dense foods provide many calories for only a small amount of food which can lead consuming more than the recommended serving size of these not-so-healthy foods to feel satisfied. Examples of nutrient-dense foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free milk products, seafood, lean meats, eggs, peas, beans and nuts. These foods contain vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fats and give you the most bang for your nutritional buck. Calorie-dense foods, on the other hand, include high-calorie foods with little or no nutritional value like potato chips, sugary drinks, candy, baked treats and alcoholic beverages. Because some of these foods provide little more than energy and almost no nutrients, they are often referred to as having “empty calories.” Not surprisingly, many of our favorite snacks fall into the calorie-dense category and consuming these food items in moderation plays an important role in maintaining ones overall health. One way to think about the idea of nutrient-dense and calorie-dense foods is to look at a variety of foods that all provide the same calories. For example: a 7-8 inch banana, one large scrambled egg, two chocolate sandwich cookies, or half of an average candy bar all have about 100 calories. The difference is that the egg and banana offer nutrients your body needs while the cookies and candy offer mostly calories.

Our Trainers Make the Difference What sets Live 2 B Healthy apart? It’s our Trainers! All of our Trainers are Certified Personal Trainers who are enthusiastic about our mission to create an outstanding fitness environment for the communities we serve. The Trainer’s role is to design exercise class- es (utilizing our proprietary protocols) appro- priate to participants’ physical abilities; lead enjoyable, interactive, motivating and safe fitness classes; and assess class participants’ progress three times per year. Live 2 B Healthy Trainers encourage class participants to safely stretch their ‘comfort zone’ both physically and interpersonally, often encouraging senior residents to try fit- ness exercises exceeding what might be tried if the resident were working out alone. As motivators and leaders, Live 2 B Healthy Personal Trainers are outgoing, per- sonable, enthusiastic and positive. They must be willing and able to motivate a variety of individuals with varying abilities. Within each level, our Trainers have hundreds of choices for creating unique, safe and fun classes. Each level has be- tween 12-40 individual different exercises in each category - ranging from muscle group emphasis (abs, biceps, etc.) to method (stretching, bands, loops, etc.) em- phasizing balance, strength and flexibility. Our Trainers customize each program to the community and base their classes on our concept of Muscle Confusion. Carlton Senior Living recognizes our fabulous Live 2 B Healthy Trainers including, Kym, Aria, Melissa and Austin, and appreciate their enthusiasm and dedication to enriching the lives of our residents. u www.Live2BHealthy.com u
