You probably remember your grandparents telling tales from their childhood—their struggles, triumphs and what it was like growing up back then. At the time, you may not have understood the significance of these family stories and the lessons hidden within but now these anecdotes are likely among your collection of most treasured memories. Regardless of the relationship, you had National Grandparents Day with your grandparents, their mere existence no doubt influenced and shaped the person you are today. As a matter of fact, the role of grandparent is so significant and vital that National Grandparents Day was established to honor and affirm the unique role grandparents play in families across the country. Each year National Grandparents Day falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day and this year will be observed on September 9th. The concept of Grandparents Day was conceived by Marian McQuade in the early 1970’s and National Grandparents Day was established by official proclamation from President Jimmy Carter in 1979. In part, his proclamation read: Unlike Mother’s and Father’s Day, Marian McQuade did not envision the holiday as “belonging” to grandparents. Instead, she saw it as a day of celebration which would allow different generations within a family to connect and share their knowledge. Although McQuade intended for grandparents to be honored on this day, she also felt that it was an opportunity for grandparents to confirm their loving legacy while passing on their years of wisdom to the following generations. Health Corner Self–Care Awareness Month in September is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves, first and foremost, is essential. Self-care is often neglected in our everyday lives. We all tend to put others needs before our own and it is crucial to remember, that we cannot fill another’s cup from our own empty vessel. While getting a massage or simply listening to the birds chirping outside are beautiful examples of taking time for our well-being, self-care can be more expansive than that. Self-care knows no boundaries. It is something that everyone, without any exclusions, can benefit from practicing on a daily basis. True self-care is not self-centered nor selfish; it is simply keeping yourself the focus of your own life. It’s about paying attention to how you feel in each moment, communicating clearly, speaking up for yourself and saying yes or no…guilt free. Here are a few simple self-care tips: ▪ Be strong in who you are. Know what your values are and honor them. ▪ Perfect the art of saying “no” to ensure that you are making choices that are right for you. ▪ Create balance in all areas of your life by making time for the things you enjoy. ▪ Practice deep breathing to relax, reduce tension and relieve stress. ▪ Show gratitude to those who care for you to help improve your own happiness. We encourage you to use the month of September to make self-care a part of your daily routine – practice being good to yourself. It can be as simple as a conscious breathe in the morning or taking part in an activity you enjoy as a break from the pressures of everyday life. The kindness we show towards ourselves helps us to shift our energy to what really matters in life and will ultimately manifest into a kinder world.

Exercise is for Everyone Frailty may be common in the elderly, but it is not inevitable, and studies suggest it can be delayed by leading active and productive lives. Staying healthy longer is possible by following some preventative measures includ- ing regular physical activity. Live 2 B Healthy strives to alleviate many of the common issues surrounding aging by centering our exercise focus on building balance and strength to improve overall health while reducing falls and the need for hospitalization. Now more than ever seniors need exercise. Seniors at any age are completely capable of participating in exercise programs like Live 2 B Healthy and study after study has proven how beneficial it is for their overall wellness. “Exercise training can protect against a number of chronic diseases of old age. More important, it maximizes residual function. In some instances, biological age is reduced by as much as 20 years. Life expectancy is increased, partial and total disability is delayed, and there are major gains in quality adjusted life expectancy. Exercise is a very important component of healthy living for senior citizens.” - Many believe that exercise is unsafe for elders, but countless studies have shown that exercise benefits individuals at every age. It improves their physical capacity by increasing their strength, balance, flexibility and mobility. Throughout the year, Live 2 B Healthy conducts testing that solidifies these studies. Exercise is also known to enhance emotional capacity; it improves mood, decreases anxiety and depression, and improves cognitive function. Seniors who are active in exercise groups are challenging the stereotypes associated with elder capabilities, and are enhancing their lives in the long run. But we think the results speak for themselves… After just 3 months of participation in Live 2 B Healthy’s program the physical results were measured at a community in Minnesota where the average age is 95. The results showed a 253% improvement in one-leg balance, a 36% increase in upper body strength, a 35% increase in lower body strength and a 23% cardiovascular improvement. u www.Live2BHealthy.com u
