Welcome to the Mississauga (Head Office) 2019 Winter/Spring Calendar! Welcome to Mind Forward Brain Injury Services! Our new name reflects a forward-looking vision of support for our clients, caregivers, and family members, as well as our community partners. We know that a person continues to grow and develop as a person with a network of support! Group, registration, and contact information are all identified in this calendar. If in doubt, please contact me directly and I will be happy to answer any of your questions. For those wishing to take part in any of our Psychosocial groups, please contact your Case Manager/ Team Leader for more information on how to register. If you are a returning member to our groups, we’re glad to have you back! I hope you find our offer- ings enriching, engaging and of value to you. Registration How to Register To register, please access the Cognito form link, which will be provided to you by the Day Program Group Leader or your Senior staff. This link will allow you to register for groups of interest, and will provide you with the total amount owed for your complete registration. Once you receive your registration total, please bring in cash/ cheque in the amount owed to the Head Office Day Program. If you require addition- al support with this process you may also consult your Case Manager or seek assistance from our Day Ser- vices team member. Please note that all groups are offered on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis. Payment Method: 1. We accept payment by cash or cheque (including post dated cheques). Mississauga Groups & Descriptions MONDAY Bowling @ Classic Bowl Monday January 7th- Monday June 17th Fee: $157 Bowling has many physical benefits such as muscle toning and strengthening and improved balance. It also improves social skills, reduces stress, and enhances hand-eye coordination. This group runs once a week and includes two games plus shoe rental. (cost is $3.75 per game for 21 weeks). A pizza party will be held at the end of our session. BINGO! Monday January 7th- Monday March 25th Fee: $25 BINGO is a popular game for people of all ages. BINGO can help to improve hand/ eye coordination, boosts cog- nitive abilities such as mental flexibility and short-term memory, and increases socialization. Woodworking 1 & 2 Monday April 8th- Monday June 17th Wednesday April 3rd– Wednesday June 19th Fee: $65 Woodworking is a popular group designed to apply higher functioning skills towards self-rehabilitation. This group is facilitated by a trained staff who provides ongoing supervision and step-by-step instruction until completion of a new project each session. Woodworking includes physical benefits such eye-hand coordination, strength, and fine-motor control, and cognitive benefits such as engineering skills, creativity and inventiveness. Making a Band Monday January 14th-Monday March 25th (10 Weeks) Fee: $100 A one-of-a-kind group where participants receive private lessons in a small group on various instruments such as drums, guitar, piano, or vocals. At the end of each session, the band will perform a live gig at a local venue. Artistic Creations 1 & 2 Monday January 7th - Monday March 25th Thursday January 3rd-Thursday March 28th Fee: $40 This fun-filled art group will help you explore your creative side and enhance your communication skills, self- confidence, imagination. It will also allow you to develop an appreciation for art and culture. TUESDAY CAFÉ MEAL Tickets Fee: $110 Get your lunches pre-paid! 25 weeks for $110 (includes three free lunches. $5.00 per week includes meal and drink. w w w. p h d a b i s . o r g
Mississauga Groups and Descriptions Social Club Tuesday January 8th- Tuesday June 18th No Fee One of our most popular groups which includes Lunch ‘N’ Learn/educational presentations, fun and interactive games, and socializing. Games Galore Tuesday January 8th - Tuesday June 18th No Fee Enhance your cognitive skills and engage in a variety of classic board games such as Scrabble, Scattergories, and Chess. Improve attention, information processing, reading, decision making, planning and strategy, and the list goes on….all while socializing with others! Cheap Date Movie Night @ Cineplex Cinema Mississauga Tuesday January 8th - Tuesday June 18th Pay as you go Enjoy a night at the movies with friends. The movie is half price for those individuals with an “Access 2 Entertain- ment” card. (inquire with your Case Manager for more information). A Scene card will earn you a 10% discount on concession stand items. WEDNESDAY Pranayama YOGA Wednesday January 2nd - Wednesday June 19th No Fee Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for overall health and relaxation. Pranayama is an integral part of yoga. The controlled breathing enables both the rhythm of performing yoga poses and relaxing the mind for meditation. Benefits of yoga include emotion regulation, a sense of well-being, life satisfaction, and spirituality. Every week, a certified instructor will guide you through the poses in this group. Book Club Wednesday January 2nd - March 27th-Book 1 Wednesday April 3rd - Wednesday June 19th-Book 2 Fee: $20 per book ($40 for both sessions) Join this group to explore various literacy works. Each week, participants will engage in reading aloud followed by an open discussion about the book in relation to life experiences. This group will help to increase communication skills (listening, reading and writing) as well as socialization and interaction skills. In-House Movie Matinee Wednesday January 2nd - Wednesday June 19th Fee: $10 Come on by to catch films on our big screen TV. Page 7 Mississauga Groups and Descriptions THURSDAY Aphasia Communication Group Thursday January 3rd- Thursday June 27th No Fee Run in partnership with the Halton Aphasia Centre (HAC) and is facilitated by registered Speech & Language Pathologists (SLP). The group focuses on teaching new skills and reviewing support strategies for anyone who has difficulty communicating and expressing themselves. This group is by referral only, please contact your Case Manager or Team Leader if you are interested. Jumpstart/ Sunshine Stroll Thursday January 3rd - Thursday June 20th No Fee This ever popular group includes some warm-up exercises, stretching, strength training, and light cardio. The group ends with a short discussion about hot topics featured in today’s latest headlines. Sports Talk Thursday January 3rd - Thursday March 28th No Fee Sports Talk group is designed for participants who enjoy playing, watching, and following sports. This group will en- hance social skills, and promote knowledge and discussion of current popular sports events. Wacky Science Thursday April 4th-Thursday June 20th Fee: $20 Enhance your general knowledge on science through simple experiments run by staff. This group will promote great group discussion and observation skills. Cards and Pool Thursday January 3rd - Thursday June 20th Fee: $25 This group will include a variety of card games such as Euchre and 21, as well as the opportunity to play a few rounds of pool. If you are looking to enhance your social skills and improve cognitive stimulation, hand/ eye coordination, and/ or language and problem solving skills, this group is for you! Page 8 Mississauga Groups & Descriptions FRIDAY Breakfast Club Friday January 11th-Friday April 5th Fee: $60 Enhance your knowledge of recipes, kitchen safety, and cleanliness. This group will assist with improving your fine motor skills and communication. Maximum of 10 participants. Gardening and Grounds Maintenance Friday May 10th - Friday September 6th No Fee This group will focus on stress relief and provide a good workout. Gardening promotes psychological well being and boosts immunity for participants by exposing them to healthy bacteria. Music and Me Friday April 5th - Friday June 21st This musical group allows members to sing and share meaningful pieces of music which are then discussed within the group. Group members will showcase their abilities during the annual Mind Forward Holiday Social, Family Picnic and other Mind Forward social events. Karaoke Friday January 4th - Friday June 21st No Fee Who doesn’t love karaoke?! This musical group will allow participants the opportunity to belt out the lyrics to their favourite tunes while improving memory, relieving stress, and boosting self confidence. It also enhances creativity and promotes brain growth by exercising both sides of the brain. Come and sing with us! Dinner and a Show! Friday January 4th - Friday June 21st Fee: $168 End your week or start your weekend with a well priced and nutritious home-style cooked meal, including a low fat dessert (the average cost is $7/ dinner). There will be a screening of the latest movie release or a classic flick. This group also includes 3 Special Event meals (St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s day dinner).
