St Patrick’s CBC Weekly Information Sheet 6 - 2020 14 February 2020 Dear Parents and Guardians, The current boarding house building was established in 1888. For more than 100 years, it was called Nazareth House. It did not form part of the school and was used as a home for the aged, poor, incurable and orphan children, who were cared for by nuns. The children’s section of the home was closed in approximately 1976 and later served only as a home for the aged. Nazareth House finally closed its doors in December 2001 and has been used as a boarding facility for St Patrick’s CBC pupils since then. The name was changed and for close to 20 years, it was called Edmund Rice House, named after a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist. Mainly due to a lack of funds, the maintenance aspect of the school was unfortunately neglected for many years, and it is only in the past four years, that the Board of Governors school management has once again made a concerted effort to revive the school campus to its former glory. With the help of a number of past pupils, meticulous budgeting and strategic planning, we have come a long way since then and various areas of the campus have already been improved, upgraded and/or refurbished. Two years ago, the school was blessed with a very generous donation of R5 million from Mr Nicky Oppenheimer, formerly the chairman of De Beers Diamond Mining Company and of its subsidiary, the Diamond Trading Company, and former deputy chairman of Anglo American. As a token of our gratitude, it was agreed that the name would be changed to Oppenheimer House in memory of his late grandfather, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, who was cared for by the Kimberley nuns in a time of need. Due to the extent of the project, it has taken us close to two years to complete this mammoth task, and this past week, the building was officially renamed and inaugurated by Mr Nicky Oppenheimer. Northern Cape Premier, Dr Saul, was also in attendance. From now on, the boarding house building will be called ‘Oppenheimer House’. This is purely a name change, and does not affect the operational side of the boarding facility at all. We currently have 44 full-time boarders. I mentioned it in last week’s WIS, and you may have noticed on Facebook, that we have launched an ‘Appreciation Week’ on Wednesday. We kicked it off on Wednesday with chocolates and Appreciation badges given to all staff, and the pupils received Appreciation stickers. On Thursday and Friday, you probably noticed the friendly faces of the staff in Henderson Street, and you may have even received an Appreciation sticker on your way past. All parents are invited to join us in Henderson Street on Tuesday, 18 February 2020 from 07h00 until 07h25. You do not have to come for the entire time, but if you want to be part of the action, please pop in. Some of the teachers also came up with really clever ways of incorporating the theme in their lessons this week and there are a few more surprises lined up for next week. This month’s Prayer Evening is on Tuesday, 18 February 2020 in the Main Chapel. A family that prays together stays together. All parents and guardians are welcome to join us. Please remember to send any prayer requests to Jo- Marie at info@stpatricks.co.za by Wednesday evenings for inclusion in the WIS. The next General Information Meeting is taking place on Wednesday, 19 February 2020 at 18h00 in the McManus School Hall. All parents are welcome. This meeting is not age/grade-specific, but focuses more on the general progress of the school, the way forward, projects underway and there will be an opportunity for general questions. After our recent Family Picnic, we received feedback that we should please create more opportunities for interaction and socializing. Parents, you are cordially invited to join us for the St Patrick’s CBC’s first ‘Long Table Dinner’. A beautifully decorated table will be set in Cornwall Street on Thursday, 27 February 2020 at 19h00. This is the evening before the start of our mid-term break. The cost is R170 p.p. This includes a three-course meal, with the main course being slow-cooked leg of lamb. A non-alcoholic cash bar will be available, but guests may bring their own wine. Senior Management and some of the Board of Governors’ members will also be in attendance. This promises to be a lovely relaxing evening of good food and great company. Invite some friends along, and 1
come and enjoy the evening with us. Tickets are available at Reception. Please do not delay, as there are only 150 tickets available. Kindly note, we are currently experiencing problems with our phone lines, especially with the quality and audibility of calls. It has been reported to Telkom and will hopefully be resolved soon. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. By now, most of you should be registered on the Engage Parent Portal. This is a very useful tracking tool for parents to monitor their child’s progress. Please accept our apologies for this platform not being fully active at the moment. We will communicate as soon as the marks have gone live. Parents should please have a parents’ sticker displayed in all vehicles. This policy is in place for the safety of your child/ren. Do not expect security to allow you through, because they should know you. No sticker, no access onto the property. They have been given strict instructions. Until you have managed to obtain additional stickers for all your vehicles, please park in Henderson Street when dropping off or fetching your child/ren. We have been fortunate that, as a result of carefully sourcing uniform items, we have been able to keep many of it at the same price for two consecutive years – some even longer. Unfortunately, since the beginning of the year, our suppliers have increased the prices of most of the clothing items. On page 10 of the WIS, please find an updated Uniform Shop Price List. Best wishes to the swimmers who are representing our school at the Inter-CBC gala in Boksburg this weekend. GRADE PR & R LONG-SLEEVED T-SHIRTS We are taking orders for Grade PR and R long-sleeved t-shirts, which may be worn underneath the tracksuit tops in winter or on cold days. It is exactly the same quality, fabric and size as the short-sleeved ones, except of course, the longer sleeves. The cost is the same as last year, R160.00 per shirt. The supplier will manufacture as we place the orders, so the lead time for delivery will be approximately 3 weeks. Orders may be placed at the Finance Office. If your child has lost his/her name badge, replacement badges must be ordered from the Finance Office at a cost of R50.00 each. Kindly note: we have to order a minimum of 10 badges at a time, so please be patient as there may be a delay in delivery time. WINTER QUILTED JACKETS FOR PUPILS During the colder winter months, some pupils prefer to wear a warmer jacket on PE days. A quilted jacket that looks the same as the tracksuit tops (see picture) is available at a cost of R450.00 each. These jackets may be worn on PE days, as well as to sport events. It may be worn with either tracksuit pants or the navy sport shorts. However, it DOES NOT REPLACE THE BLAZER. The clothing shop does not keep stock of these jackets and these orders work on a ‘payment upfront’ basis. Should you wish to order a jacket, kindly place your order with our Finance Office (Mrs Erasmus) by Thursday, 20 February 2020. There is a 6-week production time for these jackets and we would like to have them available from mid-April. For parents, we also have “SUPPORTER” quilted jackets available. They look very similar to the pupils’ one, but the navy and green are reversed, so these jackets are predominantly navy. The cost is also R450.00 each, and may be ordered at the Finance Office by Thursday, 20 February 2020.
