Akiba Academy of Dallas The Opportunity Akiba Academy of Dallas (www.akibaacademy.org) is seeking an inspired, committed educational leader to serve as the new Head of School starting in early summer 2014. The Head of School will play a key leadership role in continuing to build Akiba as an institution with a strong educational pedagogy; a rigorous curriculum; an unwavering commitment to Torah values; a skilled, dynamic faculty; and a diverse student and parent population. Chief areas of responsibility include: education and curricula strategy, planning and oversight; faculty recruitment, development, and supervision; student recruitment and retention; fundraising; community relations; administrative and fiscal oversight.

Akiba Academy of Dallas The Candidate The ideal candidate will have: 1) a track record as an educational leader comfortable with both Judaic and general studies curriculum; 2) a sophisticated knowledge of educational issues and child development; 3) a deep understanding of and commitment to all aspects of the mission and philosophy of the school; 4) strong skills and abilities as a leader, faculty mentor, school administrator and fundraiser; and 5) a solid understanding of best practices in private school education. The candidate must be able to work successfully with the school’s diverse student, parent and faculty populations (i.e., diversity of Jewish practices and affiliation, race, socio-economic status, family composition, etc.), and recognize this diversity as a school strength. The candidate must also embrace and exemplify the school’s philosophy by living a Modern Orthodox Jewish lifestyle. Critical to success will be strong planning and decision-making abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a passion for working with children in Grades Pre K-8. The Head of School reports to the President of the Board of Directors.
Position Details & Key Responsibilities Manage School and Implement Educational Program Curriculum. In partnership with the school’s teaching faculty and administrative academicians, review, revise when appropriate, implement and assess detailed general and Judaic/Hebrew language curricula for grades K-8. It is expected that this process will be on-going, involve appropriate stakeholders, and will consistently meet the school’s high educational standards. Student Assessment. Review, revise when appropriate, implement and improve the methods of student assessment and evaluation in conjunction with the general and Judaic Studies administrators and their faculty. School Schedule. Establish master calendar in consultation with the Board of Directors. Coordinate the opening and closing of the school year. Oversee the creation of the daily academic schedule for all grades. School Policies. Implement school policies as set forth by the Board of Directors and/or Halachic Advisor, including but not limited to kashrut, dress code, admissions policy, coeducational policies. Advise Board on educational implications of such policies. Accreditation Agencies. Oversee ongoing efforts in fulfilling action items from the current accreditation cycle. Coordinate future re-accreditation processes. After-school Programs. Ensure development and coordination of after-school programs and child care, as appropriate. Parent Consultation. Meet with parents as needed. Seek consultation from outside resources as needed. Student Applications. Work with the Director of Admissions to receive and screen applications from prospective students, communicate with prospective families, send letters of acceptance, interview and test prospective students as appropriate. Parent Participation. Work closely with parent volunteers. Set yearly agenda with Parent Association chairs and help support implementation of that agenda.
Position Details & Key Responsibilities Staff Recruitment and Supervision Supervision. Supervise, develop and evaluate the administrative team. Participate in recruiting and hiring for such positions, as needed. Recruitment/Hiring of Teachers and Aides. Recruit, interview and hire qualified teachers and aides in coordination with the educational administrators. Manage staff. Manage the teaching staff in conjunction with the educational administrators. Create continuing education opportunities for teaching staff. Oversight. Meet regularly with teaching and administrative staff to plan and review curricula, develop and achieve program goals and unit objectives, review lesson plans and achieve school’s yearly goals and agenda. General & Financial Administration Budget. Plan and implement the annual budget in coordination with the Board of Directors. Purchasing. In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration, approve and arrange for purchase of all necessary supplies and services. Facilities Management. In coordination with the Director of Finance and Administration and the Building Committee of the Board of Directors coordinate, monitor and manage the use of the school campus during school hours and school-sponsored after-school activities and events. Compliance. In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration, define and comply with all government regulations concerning the operation of a private school, including but not limited to the Department of Education requirements.
Position Details & Key Responsibilities Fundraising and Community Outreach Fundraising. In conjunction with the Development Coordinator, work closely with the Board of Directors on fundraising. Community Outreach. Regularly interface with community leaders to build knowledge and support for the school. Participate in and, as appropriate, plan and implement adult education and community events in coordination with Parent Association and Board of Directors. Board of Directors Interface Ex officio board member. Serve as ex officio member of the Board of Directors; attend all Board meetings. Reporting. Develop and present Head of School Report at monthly evening Board of Directors meetings. Meet weekly, or as requested, with the President of the Board or his/her designee. Establish a strong working relationship with the President of the Board of Directors. Miscellaneous. Perform other duties as designated by the Board of Directors.

A minimum of 3-5 years of school administration experience with a strong understanding of best practices in Jewish day school education. Able to implement comprehensive and dynamic curriculum in both Judaic and general studies. 2. Strategic leadership/educational vision. A confident leader who can fairly evaluate diverse interests and viewpoints. Has vision and independence of opinion combined with the ability to listen and build support. Regularly exercises good judgment and decision-making and creative solutions, and has an excellent reputation for integrity. 3. Skilled administrator. Able to effectively run and administer the school, overseeing all curriculum, educational programs, hiring, staffing, budgeting, financial oversight, fundraising, outreach, community relations, etc. 4. Excellent mentoring “know-how”. Able to identify, hire, mentor and support excellent teachers. Able to motivate and develop staff within a collaborative team environment, creating a faculty culture that brings out the best in teachers. A skilled delegator who understands how to use staff to the best of their ability. 5. Skilled communicator. Fundraiser and community ambassador. Able to interface successfully with donors, community leaders and foundations to build financial and community support for the school. Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and presentation skills. Able to connect well with all stakeholders: children, staff, parents, donors, the community. 6. Strong planner. A leader who can stay on target with the long-term strategic plan while addressing day-to-day challenges. Exceptional organizational skills; ability to set priorities and meet deadlines consistently.
