2020 has been a very different and unusual year for our school. First term was impacted by floods and bushfires although this is something we are becoming increasingly familiar with. It was not long after these significantly major events that the world as we knew it changed forever! COVID-19, Pandemic, Fear, Isolation, Shutdown, Shortages, Restrictions, Social Distancing, Border Closures, Learning @ Home, Online Learning, Essential Workers, Road to Recovery, The “New Normal” and Covid-Safe have all become part of our daily vocabulary. Although things were changing rapidly and sometimes on a daily basis, I am extremely proud of our school community and what we have been able to achieve. Firstly my teaching staff – Almost overnight they had to change decades of traditional face-to-face teaching to online learning. Although this challenged some of our more senior teaching staff, who often refer to themselves as technological dinosaurs (did I get that right Mrs Reardon and Mrs Hogan? Not mentioning any names). We had a reversal of roles and some of our wonderful early career teachers took the senior teachers under their wing to show them the ropes of online platforms including OneNote and virtual communication such as Microsoft Teams. It was a wonderful demonstration showing that everyone brings different skills to the table and are a valuable member of the team no matter how old you are or what experience you have had. Secondly to our parents – You became the lynch pin that held together teaching and learning during lockdown. For that short period of time, 3-5 weeks, although some of you might have felt it was like a lifetime, you witnessed firsthand what it is like to be in a teacher’s shoes day-in day-out. It is a hard job and I think many parents realised they are definitely not cut out to be teachers. However I truly appreciate how you took on the role, supported students learning and worked in partnership with us in following all the new rules and regulations. For those parents who this is the last of your childre n through Chinchilla State School we provide a special wish for you as not only do you leave us but you also carry the knowledge that you now no longer have “small children-primary children.” It is a special moment, now that the last of your family enters their high school years. Finally our students – I can honestly say that you are amazing. Dealing with your own emotions and fears and those of your parents, you have navigated the COVID crisis with resilience and shown that learning and education never stop. You took on all the changes with the exuberance of youth and never let go of your hopes and dreams. If anything you were the ones who showed the adults that things will work out. As the year closes I would like to sincerely thank all the Chinchilla State School staff for their ongoing commitment to the lives of so many young people. Sadly we must say farewell to a number of them. This year we farewell: Miss Stephanie Mitchell, Miss Renee Stewart, Miss Jessica Schier, Mr Dan Holdsworth and Miss Fiona Chapman. This term we also said farewell to Mrs Celeste Lee who went on maternity leave and has welcomed a beautiful baby girl. We wish these staff the best as they move into the next phase of their life. Of course, when people move on, we soon find ourselves welcoming new staff to our school. In 2021 we will welcome: Miss Senay Wilson, Mr Russell Hornsby, Miss Sara Gama Silva, Mrs Anna Byrne, Mrs Cecilia Dickman and Mrs Alison Pearce. We look forward to working with these staff and welcoming them to our community next year. May you all have a very safe and Merry Christmas and have the time to spend it with those who mean the most to you. 4
PBL Update This week’s value: Belonging – I show Gratitude. Gratitude is one of many positive emotions. It's about focusing on what's good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have. Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate the things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, clean water, friends, family, even computer access. It's taking a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are when something good happens — whether it's a small thing or a big thing. We can use lots of words to describe feelings of gratitude: We might say we feel thankful, lucky, fortunate, humbled, or blessed. So why does gratitude matter? Gratitude doesn't just feel good. Making a habit of gratitude can also be good for us. Like other positive emotions, feeling grateful on a regular basis can have a big effect on our lives. Brain research shows that positive emotions are good for our bodies, minds, and brains. Chinchilla State School’s P&C Association supports the PBL program in the school. Celebration Day Congratulations to all students who attended Celebration Day this term at the pool. Your continued efforts in following our 5 School Values is amazing! Many thanks to our wonderful P&C Association who proudly supported this term’s Celebration Day. 5
Year 6 Graduation Celebration Last week students from Year 6 were treated to a special excursion to Base Camp to celebrate their primary school graduation. Students participated in an activity morning where they played lawn bowls, tennis, beach volleyball, giant outdoor games and had fun with a photo booth! After the activities, students were treated to delicious hot lunch which was kindly gifted by Base Camp. Many thanks to Rohan from Base Camp for his kindness and generosity. Many thanks also to our P&C Association for supporting this initiative. School Holiday Security School holidays are approaching & at this time of year schools often become the target of break-ins and vandalism. Some people use these facilities to loiter. Whilst police will be conducting patrols of the schools, they are seeking your assistance in keeping the school safe. Local residents such as you are in a unique position to assist in reducing crime. If you witness suspicious activity at any time of day or night, you can contact School Watch on 13 17 88 or to report non-urgent matters, Think Policelink and call 131 444. If the matter is urgent dial Triple Zero (000). Damage caused to schools often results in huge expenses and loss for students, teachers and costs to the general community. Please keep an eye on your local school and report anyone in the school and any suspicious activity. Your assistance preventing crime is appreciated. 6
Instrumental Music Break Up On Friday, 4th December, our Instrumental Music students finally had the opportunity to give their first and final performance of the 2020 school year at our picnic break up concert on the school oval. Students from both our Beginner and Concert Band’s performed an array of pieces to please from the likes of ‘Baby Shark’ to ‘Funkytown’. As well as a performance, the evening was also to acknowledge the hard work of all of our students with our end of year awards. The awardees for our 2020 Instrumental Music awards were: Beginner Band Overall: Hermioney-Grace Neilson Beginner Band Most Improved: Lilyanne Smith Concert Band Overall: Bree Adam Concert Band Most Improved: Bella Thomson The year for these students with all of the Covid-19 restrictions has been tough, but finally being able to share all of their hard work and determination to make it through the year was truly something special and we look forward to having more performance opportunities in 2021. Congratulations to Bree Adam and Kadence Laracy who represented Chinchilla State School at the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in Brisbane over the weekend. The State Honours Ensemble Program is an educational program for music students that helps extend and encourage their pursuit of musical excellence. Both Bree and Kadence were selected from a large pool of students across the state to attend, giving them the opportunity to extend and develop their musical skills. Well done to the two budding musicians. – Miss Danielle Harris 7

SPORTS WITH MR HOLDSWORTH Welcome to the last week of school and to graduation week where some announcements were made introducing the new house captains and the sports awards. A big well done to our newly announced captains for 2021 and well done to the three winners of our school sports awards. Bree Adam took out a highly competitive girl’s award, Tyler Koehler took out the boy’s awards and the sports person of the year award winner was Milla Shepherd. As this is the last week of school, this also means the end of my tenure here at Chinchilla State School as the family is packing up and heading over to the coast for a seaside change and a new beginning. The sports subject will be left in very capable hands who most of you will meet next year and will continue to build under their watch. Thank you for the opportunity of working with everyone and I believe the students of Chinchilla State School have a very bright future ahead of themselves. Farewell and Good Luck to all for 2021 10
