Our mission statement Brentwood School develops and nurtures high achieving, enterprising and articulate individuals who have the academic and social skills, integrity and commitment to lead the next generation. Our aim and ethos Brentwood School aims to provide a first class education for pupils aged between 3 and 18. We aim to treat every single child as an individual and to ensure that all our pupils achieve the best possible academic results. In addition, we provide a wide range of opportunities outside the classroom which are designed to develop pupils who are well qualified, creative thinkers, caring and insightful. Our ethos cultivates an appetite for achievement, a determination to succeed and a lifelong love of learning. Within the classroom, we encourage pupils to strive for the highest academic standards, to seize the many learning opportunities provided and to celebrate their achievements and those of their peers. Academic learning is enriched outside the classroom with a wealth of activities that enable pupils to grow in confidence, work effectively in teams, develop leadership skills and gain a sense of service to others. Our School motto, ‘Virtue, Learning and Manners’, is taken from the School statutes of 1622. The principles of academic achievement within a caring Christian ethos remain a cornerstone of the School’s philosophy today. “You just get so much freedom. You can make use of School facilities even at weekends, which is great for studying and practising. I certainly appreciate that!” Boarding student

Overview Brentwood School is a Christian school and was founded in 1557. Initially established as a School for boys, the School has taught both boys and girls since 1988. We are a day and boarding School with a difference. We follow the ‘Diamond Model’ of teaching which means that in the Senior School, from the age of 11, our boys and girls are taught separately until the Sixth Form. This means we can tailor academic teaching more specifically to their needs. Diamond Model We believe this model provides the best environment for learning and there is a growing body of research which supports this view. Boys & Girls ages 16 to 18 (taught together) Boys Girls ages 11 to 16 ages 11 to 16 (taught separately) (taught separately) Boys & Girls ages 3 to 11 (taught together) Pupils may be taught separately but socialise together, the Diamond Model gives both social and cultural benefits. All pupils have the opportunity to mix socially outside the classroom, enjoying modern facilities set in the heart of Brentwood town and surrounded by 72 acres of playing fields and gardens. 6

Boarding admissions Admissions process via International Agents These are the main steps we anticipate for admissions of boarding students via an international agency. We treat each application individually so there may be slight variations to these procedures as appropriate. However, we hope this is a helpful reference to the main aspects for boarding admissions. We are happy to provide advice or discuss your queries at any stage and hope that you can visit us in person. You will receive a warm welcome. Step 1 To introduce your company, in the first instance please write to or email the Headmaster with background information about your company. Contact details to send this information are: headmaster@brentwood.essex.sch.uk or The Headmaster, Middleton Hall Lane, Brentwood, Essex CM15 8EE, UK. Telephone: +44 (0) 1277 243243. Step 2 We will confirm our agreement to work with your company and any commercial terms. We will also supply you with some introductory information about Brentwood School and arrange a visit if you require one at this stage. We encourage all boarding agents to come to visit us if at all possible so that you can see for yourself the first class facilities and education we offer, and so we can discuss in detail the requirements of your students. Step 3 Once you have selected individual students that you wish to propose for a boarding place, please send a copy of their latest school report and grades, together with a personal statement to the Headmaster for his initial consideration. Step 4 With the Headmaster’s approval, the student will be requested to complete the UK Independent Schools’ assessment (UKiset). Please visit the Brentwood School website at http://www.brentwoodschool.co.uk/International-Applications for instructions on how to register for the Entry Test. The student’s test results will then be sent to the School. UKiset test measurements are detailed in the notes section. Step 5 The School will review the UKiset results. If successful, and there is space in the 20
boarding house, the student will be required to formally register with the School. This can be done online using our online registration form or by email or sent by post. A completed registration form and payment of registration fee of £100 must be received to secure the registration. We will also wish to interview the student. If the student is able to visit the School we will arrange a mutually convenient time for an interview and tour, otherwise candidates will be interviewed via Skype. Step 6 When the results of the examination/assessment, interview and references are available, the Headmaster will be able to consider making a formal offer of a boarding place. We try to respond with our decision within 48 hours. Step 7 If a formal offer is made, we will send an Acceptance form to be completed and returned with the Acceptance Deposit of £11,378 (first term’s fees) within the required deadline. Once we have received your form and deposit we will confirm Mill the Hill House girl’s room boarding place at the School. Notes • The School is a Tier 4 Highly Trusted Sponsor and will provide the necessary support and documentation for visa applications, should this be required • The boarding housemasters/mistresses provide full admission information to all those joining well in advance of the September start date • The boarding house spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis and the houses are usually full by March for admission the following September. • UKiset measures five principal areas: • Non-Verbal Reasoning (a form of problem solving based around diagrams rather than words) • Spatial Ability (tests the ability to mentally rotate and manipulate shapes in two and three dimensions) • Verbal Reasoning (problem solving with words) • Quantitative (is the application of mathematical concepts and skills to solve real-world problems) • English (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, listening and creative writing).
