The campaign to celebrate fathers in the United States did not initially receive the same enthusiasm as Mother’s Day, perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” And, contrary to popular belief, this special day was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. The Origins of Father’s Day On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by widower, William Jackson Smart (pictured), tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents after hearing a church sermon honoring Mother’s Day. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. Today, the day honoring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June and this year, Father’s Day falls on June 17. In other countries–especially in Europe and Latin America–fathers are honored on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19. Health Corner Getting a sufficient amount of quality sleep can be difficult for many, but a few changes can have a significant impact, according to the Mayo Clinic. Much of the requirement for getting a good night's rest revolves around controlling the environment in which a person is sleeping and developing routines that aid a person in transitioning from awake time to sleep time. A big part of training the body to sleep better involves having a consistent sleep schedule. Ideally, a person will go to sleep and wake up within an hour of this set schedule each day while ensuring that there is time for at least seven hours of sleep or more. For those that find it hard to stick to a bedtime, focus on waking up at the desired time even if you stay up late to help reinforce that part of the cycle first and make yourself tired for the next night. An often overlooked area for good sleep is what happens during the daytime, and one helpful change could be adding extra physical activities into the daily routine. Engaging in games, exercise or even just a good walk helps a person fall asleep faster and deeper at night but shouldn't be done too close to bedtime to avoid being overly energized. Daytime naps, while they can be beneficial, should be limited to 30 minutes and taken earlier in the day to avoid disrupting that set sleep schedule. Similarly, eating big meals or drinking a lot of alcohol right before bed can create disruptions in the sleep cycle. Finally, the environment itself can be crucial for falling and staying asleep, and this means making the room cool, dark, and quiet. After setting the thermostat to lower itself a couple of degrees shortly before bed, focus on eliminating sources of light and noise in the bedroom. This can include turning off the TV or computer screen, hanging up light-blocking shades, and using earplugs and face masks.

John Shumway’s Corner Senior Fitness Sociopathology is a widely recognized personality Disorder. A sociopath is often well liked because of Liv2beHealthy their charm and high charisma, but they do not usually care anything about any other people. They Tuesday mainly of themselves and often blame others for the things that they, themselves, do. They have a complete disregard for social rules and lie constantly. Thursday They seldom feel guilt or learn from punishments. Though some sociopaths have become murders, Saturday most reveal their sociopathy through less deadly and sensational means. Psychologists tell us that roughly one in 25 Americans is a sociopath. Of course, not all sociopaths are dangerous criminals. Balance Fitness But they certainly can make life difficult, given that the defining characteristic of sociopathy is antisocial behavior. Every Tuesday The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders notes that sociopaths have a very inflated sense of self. They are narcissists in the extreme, a huge sense of self entitlement. They usually Morning Stretch blame others for their own failures. Sociopaths use deceit and manipulation on a regular basis. They Wednesday often lie just for the sake of lying. They will lie just to see whether they can trick ordinary people. Sociopaths lack the meaningful emotional inner worlds that most people have and perhaps because that they can't really imagine or feel the emotions Morning Walk of any other human being. This may well be the reason that sociopaths almost never feel: remorse, guilt, or shame. Thursday Sociopaths bounce from goal to goal, and often act on the spur of the moment. They can be irresponsible when it comes to their finances and their obligations to other people. Sociopaths can be Brain Fitness w/ Kit very charismatic and friendly; because they know that will help them get what they want. They are Every Tuesday expert con artists and always have a secret agenda. Normal people are often amazed when they find that someone is a sociopath because sociopaths are so amazingly effective at blending in. They are masters of disguise. Dakim Brain Fitness I imagine most Americans do not think about these things very much, unless you happen to be related to, Everyday or know, a sociopath. But I suggest that now, in 2018, all Americans should think very carefully about these matters. They may well effect us all.
Building the Case for Group Fitness Classes When did exercise become something we “had to do” or “should do”, rather than something we did because we enjoyed it? When we were kids, most of our physical activity revolved around playing games with kids in the neighborhood and orga- nized school and community sports teams. Sure, the fitness was a payoff, but the real benefit was continued motivation and the chance to bond with others in our age group. As younger adults, we found community sports leagues, and even group fitness classes at local gyms to help keep up motivated to stay fit. As we age, however, it just seems that we have fewer and fewer opportunities to participate in group fitness classes. Some of the benefits of group exercise include: A social and fun environment – if we can have fun while we exercise, we”re more likely to continue to do it. Our Live 2 B trainers keep participants engaged and motivated throughout the class. Safe and effectively designed work- outs – Live 2 B Healthy exercises are specifically designed to tackle the issues that the aging face – such as loss of balance, mobility and muscle tone. When taking a Live 2 B Healthy class, you know that we will cover all the impor- tant areas for you – and some you may not have even realized were important. Accountability factor – When you participate in a group fitness class, there is always lively conversation in the group. You will be missed if you don’t attend a class. Don’t be surprised if one of your neighbors knocks on your door to check in with you if you miss a class. A workout that requires no prior knowledge or experience – Many people find themselves intimidated by the complexity of the fitness equipment, espe- cially the computerized pieces. Attending a group fitness class, led by a certified personal trainer, will ensure that you are getting the most benefit out of the time you spend in class. You will also be provided with modifications for specific limitations. u www.Live2BHealthy.com u
