CLIMB ANY MOUNTAIN, Bergen, 4 – 7 June 2020 Bienvenue! Bienvenido! Welcome! On behalf of all the OB-PS Supporters in Norway, we are happy to welcome you to this very exciting and interesting event. Bergen is superbly located on the west coast of Norway, with magnificent views of mountains and fjords. With the slogan, “Climb any Mountain”, we are highlighting an important message for all of us in the Olave Baden-Powell Society. Girls and young women all over the world can develop their potential, contribute greatly to society and realise their own personal ambitions with the right encouragement and support. Throughout the event, we will explore how the challenge of climate change is being felt all over the world. We will consider how this pressing issue is impacting women and girls and how we can face this challenge together. We are looking forward to seeing you! WELCOME FROM THE NORWEGIAN GUIDES AND SCOUTS Håkon Djupvik, Chief Commisioner Gunvor Meling, Chief Commissioner of the Norwegian Guide and Scout of the YWCA-YMCA Guides and Association Scouts of Norway The Guides and Scouts of Norway welcome you to the Olave Baden-Powell Society Event in Bergen. Our members, many of whom you will meet throughout your stay, are happy to join you and give their support during the event. We are happy to be hosting this event. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW See back cover for details Thursday 4 June Registration at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel and the event shop will be open all day. There will be a meeting of Ambassadors and National Coordinators with Country meetings being held in the afternoon. A reception for new Supporters will be followed by the Welcome Reception for all attendees at the Grieg Hall. Please note, transport will be provided from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. Friday 5 June All plenary sessions will be at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. These will be followed in the evening by the Presentation Ceremony, held at the nearby Håkonshallen, a magnificent medieval royal hall. • During Plenary One, representatives from WAGGGS will present an overview of recent activities and strategies for the next two years. • This year, 20 years will have passed since the UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security was adopted. It is timely to focus on the importance of involving women in formal negotiations. • Conflicts affect people globally; is there a way for young people to be informed and educated to prevent further conflict? • Young people have demonstrated and made their voices heard on topics of environment and climate changes: are we willing to listen? GUEST SPEAKERS The programme will feature many interesting and inspiring speakers, both during the plenary sessions and in breakout sessions. Further information will be posted on the OB-PS website. We are highlighting here just four of the speakers who will be sharing their experience. All four of these speakers have been actively involved in climbing different mountains through their professional and private lives. Liv Arnesen is known for her expeditions to the South Pole. She was the first woman to undertake this venture alone. Liv has also undertaken river expeditions with Ann Bancroft and the Girl Scouts of the USA. The steepest mountain, and biggest challenge she faced, was climbing Mount Everest. Keen on education, Liv created a website for children and young people to enable them to follow her travels. She is the co-editor of a recent book, called “Motivation and Mastering”. Olave Baden-Powell Society - Climb any Mountain - June 2020 7
Pål Nesse, Special Adviser and Spokesperson, has been working for NRC, the Norwegian Refugee Council, for almost 30 years. He is familiar with the various challenges and obstacles that refugees face, and he believes education and learning are instrumental in the lives of children, young people and women. For many years, NRC has had a project of cooperation with the Norwegian Guide and Scout Association. Many of the organisation’s youth members have been able to visit NRC project countries and meet local young people there. Pål will be joined on stage by some of the young people who have travelled to Africa as part of this project. Solveig Schytz is a former Chief Commissioner for the Guides and Scouts of Norway. She is an active politician, and a professional curator of historical sites and cultural heritage. Solveig is actively engaged in environmental issues and believes it is urgent to change human behaviour. Kristin Halvorsen is director of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo. She is also the Head of the Biotechnology Council. In many parts of the world, climate change is having a significant and increased impact on girls and young women. Kristin will talk about climate change and challenges from this gender perspective. 8 Olave Baden-Powell Society - Climb any Mountain - June 2020
HALF DAY TOURS ACTIVITY LEVELS FOR THE TOURS: 1. Some walking around a museum or gallery 2. Ability to board a boat or take a 10-minute walk on a paved sidewalk 3. Walk on uneven ground or stairs. Walking shoes recommended. Please note: All tours depart from the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. For all tours, we assume you can get on/off a bus on your own or perhaps with a helping hand. Please sign up to your preferred tour when you register for the event. TOUR #1 FLØIBANEN AND MOUNT FLØIEN (Activity level: 2 and 3) Take the funicular railway to Mount Fløien and see all of Bergen in just seven minutes. The trip starts from the city centre, just 150 metres from the Fish Market and Bryggen. From Mount Fløien, you can enjoy beautiful views while you study the cityscape and the fjords surrounding Bergen. TOUR #2 TROLDHAUGEN (Activity level: 2 and 3) Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) is undoubtedly Norway`s greatest composer. His home Troldhaugen is one of the country’s most renowned attractions. Since 1885, the marvellously situated little villa has drawn visitors from all over the world. Down by the idyllic Nordås Lake, you`ll also find the composer`s hut and Grieg`s final resting place. TOUR #3 GUIDED TOUR OF BRYGGEN (activity level: 2) Take a wander through Bergen`s past, spanning 900 years of history. You’ll travel from Bryggen Museum, through the ancient wooden buildings and alleyways, to the Hanseatic Museum. This walking tour gives an intimate picture of what it was like to live in the city during the Middle Ages. These buildings are on UNESCO`s World Heritage List. TOUR #4 OLD BERGEN MUSEUM (Activity level: 2) Many historical houses were saved during the modernisation of the city centre and relocated to Old Bergen Museum, where they form a small wooden town with streets, squares and alleyways. The houses are surrounded by an English-style 18th-century park with a beautiful view of the sea You will explore what life was like for the families that lived in these houses and their servants. TOUR #5 CITY SIGHTSEEING BY COACH (Activity level: 1) The trip will give an interesting view of Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, also known as «The gateway to the fjords». You will get an impression of central Bergen – the harbour, the medieval castle, the Hanseatic wharf, downtown as well as residential areas in the outer parts of the city. TOUR #6 (Activity level 2) On this tour you will you have an opportunity to visit the Norwegian National Championship in Guiding and Scouting. 10 Olave Baden-Powell Society - Climb any Mountain - June 2020
REGISTRATION Book online using the registration form found online at www.wagggs.org/en/support-us/ob-ps/ob-ps-events/ • US $995– Registration fee for Young Supporters and Early Bird Registration for all others who pay before 31 January 2020. • US $ 1,095 - Full Registration fee after 31 January 2020 • Please note that registration will close when event capacity has been reached. Your registration fee covers: • All meals as part of the scheduled programme – from the Welcome Reception and Dinner on Thursday 4 June until, and including, lunch Sunday 7 June. Breakfast is provided for all registered event participants on 5, 6 and 7 June • All scheduled programme events during this time, including the Half Day Tours and the Gala Dinner at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel on Saturday 6 June • All transport provided as part of the scheduled programme Please note, hotel accommodation is not included in the event cost. You can secure your accommodation at one of four hotels, at special OB-PS Event rates, through links provided in the accommodation section below. Three hostel options are also listed. Cancellation and Refund Policy: Please note that all cancellations and/or changes to registration must be made in writing to OB-PS by email: obps@wagggs.org The event registration fee will be refundable via the booking website until 31 January 2020. After this date, the event fee is non-refundable. The Event Fee is transferable and there is no extra fee if your registration is transferred to another person. Visas Some people can visit Norway without a visa, but most people from countries outside the EU/EEA must apply for a visitor’s visa. Please check with the Norwegian Embassy or Consulate in your country. If you will need a letter of invitation to attain your visa, please indicate this on your registration form. In addition, three hostel options are included. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BERGEN? You will find information from Visit Bergen in your bags, including a map of the city. Bergen is one of the oldest cities in Norway and celebrates its 950- year jubilee in 2020. There will be different events and exhibitions to mark this special celebration. PRE AND POST TOURS The Tour Operator for the tours is ABX Travels. OPTION #1 Oslo & Bergen – PRE-EVENT TOUR Capital & West Coast This trip will start by exploring the main highlights of Oslo –Norway’s capital city. The train to Bergen will pass through magnificent landscape with spectacular views and past roaring waterfalls. You will pass through Norway’s most breath-taking UNESCO-protected fjord and majestic mountain scenery, as you take a trip on Europe’s most scenic rail journey. 14 Olave Baden-Powell Society - Climb any Mountain - June 2020
OPTION #2 Bergen & Oslo – POST-EVENT TOUR This trip will show you all the same sites as option #1 above, but you will travel in the opposite direction, from Bergen to Oslo. OPTION # 3 Bergen – Stavanger – POST-EVENT TOUR West Coast On this tour you will experience a varied scenery of impressive waterfalls, a historic stave church and a fairytale forest. We will also visit UNESCO protected fjords and spectacular views along our trip to Stavanger. We travel by fjordcruise and bus. OPTION #4 Bergen - Svalbard – POST-EVENT TOUR In magical Svalbard you will experience the arctic and wilderness nature, combined with residents like polar bears, seals and orcas. We will attend a walrus cruise and visit an old coal mine as well as getting to know the beautiful town “Longyearbyen”. On this tour you travel to and from Svalbard by plane. OPTION #5 Bergen – Senja – Tromsø North Norway – POST-EVENT TOUR Senja is Norway´s second largest island, the roads here are narrow and they twist and turn along the deep fjords with crystal clear, icy-cold water. This trip will include spectacular fjords, cultural heritage, tiny fishing villages and houses clinging to the most surprising spots. USEFUL INFORMATION Airport Arrival Information Bergen airport Flesland is located about 18 kilometres south of Bergen city. There are several ways to get to Bergen city centre from the airport: • The Airport Bus (Flybussen) takes about 30 minutes and stops at Bryggen where the event’s hotel and all other alternative hotels are situated. You can find the bus just outside the arrival terminal. Adult fare: NOK 125 • The cheapest way to get from Bergen airport Flesland to Bergen city centre is to go by the City Light Rail (Bybanen) which takes 45 minutes. The City Light Rail starts right at the airport terminal and ends in the centre of Bergen. Adult fare: NOK 38. • The most direct way to get to Bergen city centre is to go by taxi. A taxi from Bergen airport Flesland to Bergen city centre costs NOK 400- 500, but prices vary according to the time of day and the number of passengers. Taxis are parked just outside the arrival terminal. Transportation Most of the activities will be within walking distance from the hotels. Clothing June is the beginning of summer in Norway. The average temperature in Bergen in June is 14 degrees C / 57 degrees F and there will be a mixture of rain and sunshine. There will be appro. 18 hours day light. Visitors travelling to Bergen should plan on bringing a waterproof rain jacket, since it might be raining some days. Plan on layering your clothes as some days it might be nice and warm, but it can change and get a bit chilly. The dress code for the meeting will be smart casual or uniform, for the Presentation Ceremony and Gala dinner the dress code will be smart, uniform or national dress. Currency and Payment The official currency used in Norway is Norwegian crowns (NOK). Notes are denominated in NOK 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000. Coins are in NOK 1, 5, 10 and 20. Debit cards and credit cards are widely used in Norway. Most cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Access, Diners and America Express are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. Time Zone Bergen in June is on Central European Summer Time (CEST) - UTC/GMT +2 hours. Water Tap water in Norway is safe to drink. If you prefer mineral or sparkling water, this is readily available in shops or at vending machines. Electricity The voltage in Norway is 220 -230 volts and electrical plugs for use within the hotel rooms have two cylindrical pins – CEE 7/16 or Europlug. We advise you to bring your own adaptors. Smoking Smoking in Norway is prohibited indoors in public buildings, aboard all means of public transport and in the waiting area for public transport. In addition, it is also illegal to smoke in outdoor locations that are close to schools and hospitals. Internet All hotels have access to free internet. Name Tags Name tags will be given out at registration.
