5 EV Road Tour Information Th e 2020 EV Roa d Tour is on! The Annual #LeadingTheCharge EV Road Tour first started over the Christmas holidays in 2014/15. Originally, there was only one rapid DC charger between Bluff and Cape Reinga, and so the trip was a real feat in patience and pioneering spirit. The original road trippers went on to start the Better NZ Trust and road trips became an annual event. Wherever they went, these unusual vehicles would draw a crowd. The Teslas were a particular novelty because at the time there was no dealership in New Zealand. Up until this year, the ready crowd at each destination was the impetus to use the road trip as an EV promo- tional tour and educational experience for the New Zealand public. In 2019 we found that EVs had become a household term and most people had seen them before. They were no long the novelty that they once were. Yet we still have EV Owners who want to keep the tradition alive. So this year it’s all about the EV community. The format will be one of a rally. Each making their own way to a rendezvous point for the evening. There will be no “EV events” as such, but we do expect to draw a crowd at times We’ve also tried to keep most day’s driving to a minimum, with a few necessary exceptions, so we can have time to enjoy the places we visit. 16 Accommodation Budget Suggestions 1 COROMANDEL We have selected a few budget motels and/or holiday cabins to give you an idea of where to book. You may also need accommodation in Auckland or Dunedin, before or after the tour. We can recommend Aurora on George. At 678 George Street, Dunedin, close enough to walk to town. Although there is no onsite charging, the ChargeNet charger at the University is literally around the corner. In Auckland, let us know whether you wish to be north, south, east or west and we will find you options. LeadingTheCharge Road Trip has stayed in some of these places before, and others, such as Belt Road, have contacted us to say they are looking forward to us coming through town. Some we have not been to, as we endeavour to stop at towns that we have not been to before. Wherever possible we have tried to choose places that have restaurants within walking distance, with a few exceptions. All of them have either onsite AC charging or DC charging nearby. But please double check when you book to be sure that you can charge there overnight and that you have the correct cables, ie: Commando or Type 2, etc. Overnight charging is key to making the road tour work. In the past some of our road trippers have recommended bringing a heavy duty extension cord if using a 3-pin plug. There are some good deals at the moment as the hospitality industry is dependent on domestic travel. We recommend you book soon due to school holidays and ski season. Please ensure you have a cancellation clause, as there’s always a chance we could go back into lockdown. L E A D I N G TH E C H ARGE EV ROAD TOUR 2020 info@betternz.org
