For this year’s Summer 12 fundraising I will be reading from the bible. If we gloss over the various disputes about who wrote which of the New Testament letters, there are 13 letters written by Paul, the last of which is Philemon, which is just 25 verses long. I will therefore do a reading of the other 12 letters of Paul, in Saint George’s church, one Saturday over the summer. It should take around five hours. The intention is for church to be open, and depending on restrictions at the time maybe refreshments might be possible. Watch this space for further announcements in due course. From Fr Ian Each year, on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday (June 3rd this year), is the festival of Corpus Christi (Latin for body of Christ). It is celebrated in the Catholic church, and in many Anglican churches, in which it is also called ‘Thanksgiving for the Institution of Holy Communion’. While it is true that we also commemorate this on Maundy Thursday, there are several other themes on that day, and demand from various quarters resulted in Corpus Christi first being celebrated in the mid-13th century. Holy Communion is also called The Eucharist and The Lord’s Supper. Deanery News...... Eucharist comes from the Greek word meaning thanksgiving. The Lord’s Supper is a term used by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians. Indeed, From this month, the Ashton, Oldham East and Oldham West the first account of the institution of the Eucharist comes in 1 Corinthians, deaneries become the Oldham and Ashton deanery and we which was written before any of the gospels, three of which also include look forward to welcoming our new Area Dean, the Revd direct accounts. We understand that plans for Mission Communities and the changes being proposed will be Jesus left us with a great deal of teaching and instruction on how to live our lives, but very little in terms of prayer and worship. Other than the words of communicated soon and we look forward to hearing more! the Lord’s Prayer, we have this command, given to his disciples at the Last Supper, ‘do this in remembrance of me’ (Luke 22.19 and 1 Corinthians Your prayers are asked for the several clergy vacancies in 11.24). We can see from reading Paul’s letters and the Acts of the Apostles our deanery (which we are doing what we can to cover), and that the early Christian church continued to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. we pray for St John’s Hurst as they move into vacancy this The Church of England has always included Holy Communion within its month when Mthr Liz moves to Royton: in addition, St worship – an order of service is found in all editions of the Book of Hilda’s Audenshaw, St Mary’s Droylsden are vacant and St Common Prayer, as well as all subsequent provisions right up to our Stephen’s Audenshaw will be when the Revd Roger Dixon current Common Worship. In the Canons (laws) of the Church of England retires next month. ‘Holy Communion shall be celebrated in at least one church in each benefice… at least on all Sundays and principal Feast Days…’ (Canon rner B14). Co edy Com While Christians differ about exactly how or what form it takes, we recognise a special presence of Christ in the celebration of Holy Communion. We are given a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. We give thanks for all that Christ has done for us. And we do this in remembrance of Him. Amen. God bless you all. Fr Ian

June is #pride month, and we reaffirm our desire to welcome each and all to our churches. God loves you, as you are, and so do we. Last year both PCCs unanimously adopted this inclusion statement: “We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive Christian community built on the understanding that God accepts us equally, irrespective of gender, sexuality, race, social standing, belief, age or ability - and believing that God calls us equally to share that unconditional love with all people, without exception.”
