2018 HIGHLIGHTS Sue Leonard President PUNTOS MAS DESTACADOS DEL PRESIDENTE 2018 was a productive if initially tumultuous year. New board members and new staff members worked hard together to put us on our most solid footing ever. At a September board retreat with new and continuing staff, we defined a future direction for JA over the next 3 years. These will include supporting more university students, and exploring new student programs: both a 2 year tech track and masters degree students. With fresh blood in the areas of development, communications and mentor leadership, and for the first time ever a true planned leadership succession, we have already witnessed that the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019 are showing the rewards of all the hard work of the 1st half of 2018.
2018 HIGHLIGHTS PUNTOS MAS DESTACADOS DEL PRESIDENTE ‣ Jóvenes Adelante is developing an English learning tracking and support system including covering some costs of classes. We are asking the students to make a commitment to have moderate English fluency in their field of study by graduation. ‣ Until now, we have not had extra funds to accept students whose families could not provide a portion of the funding. Now, thanks to the Betse Davies Special Stars Fund, we are also accepting those students who need extra financial assistance. ‣ JA is beginning to assist students in funding their títulos and cédulas, first starting with the ‘17, ‘18 and onward, older graduates. In Mexico, university graduates are not considered professionals in their field until they complete the requirements for these professional certifications. This documentation process varies greatly by school and field, can take as long as 2-3 years to complete, and costs can be up to 20,000 pesos. JA is now making professional documentation an expectation of all students who are accepted into our program. To further that end, JA has adjusted the sponsorship amount to include the título/cédula costs and is paying those costs directly to the university. This support will assist our graduates in entering, and getting paid a professional salary, in their field.
2018 HIGHLIGHTS PUNTOS MAS DESTACADOS DEL PRESIDENTE ‣ The Student Programs Team brought on two new staff in the middle of the selection process and we accepted 26 new students last year, keeping with our goal of accepting at least 25 new students each year. ‣ The Board created a new position and brought on a board member dedicated to coordinating the mentor program. ‣ And, most remarkably, we fulfilled our long held dream of having a President Elect during the last year of the president’s term. We are at least part way there. Don Krim was the President Elect for the past six months and in March of 2019 became the new President of Jovenes Adelante.
ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ADMINISTRACIÓN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. Angélica Argüelles García Angie earned a university degree in business administration, and has worked as executive administrative assistant, a travel sales manager, and a small business manager. “It’s very important to help young people because they are the future of the nation, and ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT without our support, we might Mayra Olvera miss the opportunity for them to light our way forward.” Mayra joined JA with 8 years of general administrative and customer service experience in sales, tourism and banking. She manages many of JA's key administrative and logistical functions — banking, printing, event planning, advertising and reception. She fields a multitude of inquiries, manages the receipt of donations, enacts payments and maintains the filing system. Her focus now it to “...support the staff team and the Board as we keep making the office more efficient, more professional. I want to see our systems running smoothly and our reputation strong!”
STUDENT PROGRAM STAFF PROGRAMAS ESTUDIANTILES STUDENT RELATIONS COORDINATOR Saray Martinez Saray has a degree in Psychology and brings an NGO background of working with children – mostly girls – to transform their life trajectories. Now as JA’s Student Relations Coordinator, Saray embraces the chance to assist each JA student reach their full potential. She believes, “It’s not simply about academic achievement – it’s about seeing past your pre-set limits, opening your mind to the world and STUDENT SELECTION achieving even more than you thought you PROCESS COORDINATOR, could.” Dulce Cerritos Dulce comes from twelve years in a high-stress management position in the private sector. Her organizational skills and "grace under fire" approach make her a perfect fit for the challenges of student recruitment and selection. Having struggled to secure funding for her own university career, Dulce now welcomes the chance to help other students succeed where she missed out, saying, "I see myself in each applicant and I know how they feel. For me, it's a gift to be part of an organization that will ensure their success."
