AUGUST 2021 On Friday 23rd July, the fundraising team held our annual Golf Day – and it was the perfect day for it! The sun was shining, and everyone was excited to step onto the fairway in support of the Hospice. The day was a roaring success! All team spots sold out, and over £7,000 was raised. Our supporters provided some incredible prizes for the competing teams, including a set of brand new golf clubs, box seats at a Castleford Tigers match, and a luxury hotel stay! S2S were the champions of the day, despite being two team members short, with The Thorpedoes and MTS Carryway hot on their heels in second and third place. O Thank you to Pickerings of Pontefract, Cryer and Stott, Goodworth Brothers, Brake Brothers and Asda on Halfpenny Lane for providing refreshments on the day! A huge thank you also goes out to Joanne Schofield, who gave the most heart-warming speech, and our wonderful volunteers June, Elaine, Chris and Claire. Jill, Becki and Aggie Fundraising

Challenge Complete! Between Thursday 15th and Friday 16th July, six determined cyclists from TotalEnergies in Ferrybridge tackled a 160 mile cycling challenge in aid of our Hospice! Enduring ten hours in the saddle each day, Team Total endured steep hills and hot weather on their journey to their plant in Preston and back. With lots of encouragement, plenty of water and a supply of bananas, all six riders managed to complete the challenge – with only a few scrapes and bruises – taking in some fantastic scenery along the way! Riding along sedate canals and paths over the beautiful Pennines, Team Total took this gruelling challenge in their stride. The team showed great team spirit, boosting each other all the way. Patrick, a Team Total rider, isn’t too sure how much saying “this is the last hill today lads” really helped, but enjoyed their Friday morning ice-cream stop! The cyclists were met at both Preston and Ferrybridge with cold drinks and snacks to recover from the tiring trip. Although their journey was tough, Patrick still recommends others to do their own fitness fundraisers, and has some tips for those considering a cycling challenge; ‘Make sure you are slightly mad and have a few cycling miles in your legs before taking on the challenge, and always have a domestique! ‘Challenges like this are great for raising money for worthwhile causes such as The Prince of Wales Hospice, they get you out and about and keep you fit and healthy. The camaraderie of the event was fantastic and you learn things about people you never knew!’ It’s not too late to donate to TotalEnergies’ Just Giving page in aid of the Hospice! Data and Security Protecion We have been completing both the old version of the Information Governance Toolkit and more recently the Data Security and Protection Toolkit on an annual basis for a number of years now. Once again, I am pleased to let you all know that we have successfully submitted the annual submission for 2020-21. Data Security and Protection Standards for health and care sets out the National Data Guardian’s (NDG) data security standards. Completing this Toolkit self-assessment, achieved by providing evidence and confirming where we meet the assertions, demonstrates that the Hospice is working towards or meeting the NDG standards. The 10 key areas covered are: 1 Personal Confidential Data 2 Staff Responsibilities 3 Training 4 Managing Data Access 5 Process Reviews 6 Responding to Incidents 7 Continuity Planning 8 Unsupported Systems 9 IT Protection 10 Accountable Suppliers It is also excellent to see every year we continue to improve in a number of areas, including adopting/ following best practices, which then become engrained within everyday activities and often aren’t even realised until completing the Toolkit submission. However, like everything else due to time/resources there is always more we can do and this will continue to prove challenging, especially in light of recent circumstances. To try and assist in this, we are now speaking to external consultants to aid us with this and will involve some additional training and onsite guidance. We are hopeful this will be of benefit across all areas of the Hospice and I look forward to providing details in the near future. In the meantime, if anyone has any questions or needs any further information about the Toolkit or data, please let me know and I will endeavour to assist. Thanks to everyone across the whole Hospice for your continued support and cooperation with this. Martin Ward IT Manager / Data Protection Officer. Garden Project We’re excited to announce that our grant application to improve access to the Hospice garden has been accepted by the Morrisons Foundation. The foundation has generously granted £25,000 towards a ‘Garden Project’, which will see the gardens outside the patients rooms and the Haven redeveloped to provide semi- private patio areas and larger shared space and general improvements to the accessibility. Initial concept designs have been drawn up and costed to assist in approaching funders, however there is still a long way to go in raising the remainder of funds required. We are hopeful of achieving this, and that work may start sometime next year.
