18 17/ Program Description There will be a mandatory 2 run screening for each new snowboarder looking to join the OMST program. This will allow members of our coaching staff to determine if the rider is qualified to ride with the team and which group the rider will be riding with. We have three groups based on riding ability and the long-term goal is to establish a development pipeline for each rider on the OMST. Groms Team (Betsy Gritman) The Groms program is designated for young riders (6-9) who can shred the entire Mountain and who are coming into their own with snowboarding. Our coaches will work with the group to develop all-mountain riding skills and to most importantly have a ton of fun. The riders will be introduced to many different entry-level technical aspects of snowboarding including, but not exclusive to, all-mountain riding, the terrain park, switch riding, gate training (slalom and GS) and BX. The Groms will spend at least 50% of their time freeriding. Riders in this group will also have the opportunity to test the competitive waters by competing in local USASA and Okemo Mountain events. Ultimately, we hope that after the rider’s first year in the Groms group, that he/she will develop a strong sense of on-hill independence and proper Mountain etiquette, coupled by a continued enthusiasm and passion for the sport. Groms Team Requirements: Participants must be able to ride the lift alone, put on their own equipment, ride down a variety of challenging trails at OKEMO and pass the one-hour screening. On Deck (Luke Bonang, Eddie Johnson, Garrison Rufa ) The On Deck category is for athletes ages 10-15 who are advanced snowboarders looking to take their riding to the competitive level. We will work intensively with each rider on several different disciplines, which are all targeted towards having fun with the sport while developing the essential skills necessary to compete at a higher level. With a primary focus on improving overall riding skills, athletes in this age group will improve their switch riding, transition riding (pipe and jumps), “jibbing” (boxes and rails), all-mountain riding, and gate training (slalom and GS). This age group will also have the opportunity to compete in USASA events in the Southern Vermont series. Competing at USASA nationals at Copper Mountain is also a possibility. Am (Luke Bonang, Matt Fortuna) The Am group is our group of the most advanced riders ages 10-18 on the team who have years of competition and park riding under their belt. The Am program is predominately geared towards park and pipe riding but with a bit of cross training (BX and Gate training) included as well. We will work with each rider to hone in on advanced and technical freestyle tricks in the park and pipe, in addition to a developing a more tactful approach to competitions and everyday riding. Video analysis will also be used as a tool to help the Am rider visually comprehend his/her riding. We strongly encourage all the athletes in this age group to compete in the local USASA competition series in addition to competing in other local amateur events.
The Groms Team has been developed to provide coaching for young, aspiring snowboarders (ages 6-9) who would like to start competing at a young age but who have not yet reached the level of the older kids at OMST. The young rippers will learn the basic etiquette of snowboarding, shredding the park and pipe, riding the trees, training gates, and how to navigate a BX course. The ultimate goal of the Groms program is to establish fundamental riding skills at young age, to generate an everlasting passion for snowboarding and to better prepare for when they enter the OMST. We strongly encourage riders in this program to compete in our local USASA Southern Vermont Series and will have to compete in at least 1 GS/SL and BX race during the season. Training Schedule: Weekends and holidays (December 2nd- March 18th) Daily Schedule 8am: Meet in front of Sitting Bull for stretching 8:15am-11am Training 11am-12am Lunch with Coaches 12am-1:30am Afternoon Training *Requirements: Participants must be able to ride the lift alone, put on their own equipment, ride down a variety of challenging trails at Okemo and pass the one-hour screening.

with the freedom of the sport as I came from a ski background. I shed my sticks and concentrated on just snowboarding. I started instructing at Okemo Mountain and coaching the Green Mountain Union High School snowboard team. I enjoyed instructing but found coaching and watching the athlete’s progress to be more rewarding. I joined the OMST team of coaches in 2009. When I am not out on the hill I work as a Gardener/Landscape designer. I am currently in school to get my degree in Landscape and Garden Design. I can also be found on the tennis court, running, and hiking. 18 17/ The Essentials It is very important that all of our OMST riders bring the appropriate gear each day we train. As we know, the weather is always subject to change here in Vermont and we want everyone to be comfortable on the hill at all times. Below is a checklist of the essentials. Everyday Training Essentials (Checklist) Helmet ___ Okemo Mountain lift pass ____ Snowboard ____ Gloves/Mitts ____ Goggles ____ First layer (under garment) ____ Snow pants ____ Weather appropriate jacket ____ Facemask/Balaclava (for cold days) ____ Cell phone and/or cell phone number where parents can be reached ____ Lunch and/or money ___ Competition Essentials ALL ABOVE ITEMS PLUS: USASA Pre-registration ___ Transportation___ Lunch and/or money ___ ALL OMST snowboarders must wear a helmet at all times! There will be no exceptions to this rule and any athlete who does not bring and wear a helmet, will not be allowed to train with the team.
18 17/ Competition info 2017/2018 It is our hope that most riders on the OMST will compete in at least one USASA event within their first year of riding. However, we will not pressure any athlete to compete unless we, as coaches, feel as though the rider is ready. We strongly suggest that athletes in all our groups compete in all the USASA Southern Vermont Series events/disciplines that they are comfortable competing in. Competitions are an excellent way for individuals to get out of their element, push the envelope, and to develop camaraderie with riders from other mountains. Attending USASA Nationals is also a possibility. Registering PLEASE, PLEASE PRE-REGISTER FOR ALL USASA EVENTS as they fill up quickly. (Please see the USASA registration form and 2017/2018 schedule) or visit the Southern VT Series website for more info: https://www.usasa.org/index.php/regions/new-england/southern-vermont Transportation Coaches will not be providing transportation to USASA events for weekend athletes so it is up to the parents to provide transportation to and from the event. Carpooling is always a great option! Please bring your son/daughter to the event by 7:30am! This will allow coaches to check equipment, discuss the upcoming event, and get on the hill for practice runs. If an athlete shows up after registration is closed, he/she will not be able to compete! Food It is up the parent and athlete to either pack a lunch or bring money to the event for food. Food is FUEL!! Preparation for events The majority of our weekend athletes come into to town the night before the weekend’s events. Therefore, it is up to the parent and athlete to make sure that the equipment is ready for the weekend’s event. We have provided a checklist below that will help.

18 17/ Tuning and Gear Edges: Should be sharpened for GS, Slalom, BX, and Pipe. Not as necessary for slopestyle events (UNLESS the course is icy). Wax: Wax is VERY important. Athletes should have boards waxed before each weekend of training. Most of you know that different waxes go with different snow temps, so please check the weather and wax accordingly. Base structure/base grinds: Over the course of the season; rails, ice, wood trails, and other intangibles will scar up a snowboard’s base and structure. This is inevitable, but with proper care and an occasional base grind, the board will last longer and continue to be ride smooth. Tuning shops: Okemo Mountain Resort has a tuning shop located in the Main Base Lodge, and there are two shops in town that offer great tuning as well; the Darkside Snowboard Shop, (located in the plaza at base of access road), Totem Pole Ski shop, across from Benson’s Chevrolet) offer tuning. Always make sure to ask for an iron-on “hot wax”! Bindings: Please make sure all the hardware on bindings are tightened up before training. This will prevent straps from becoming loose (and possibly falling off) and deter movement in binding angles. Boots: Always store inside and kept dry when not on the hill Outerwear: Always make sure to be prepared for Vermont weather. As we know, weather can change at any time so dressing warm, with the essential layers is very important! Coaching at Events It is very important that coaches are allowed to coach at events. We will do our best to make sure that our riders are mentally prepared and excited to compete in their given event. We have seen numerous cases, where parents use competitions as a time to consult with the coaches regarding questions on their child’s progress. We understand the concern, but will need to focus 100% of our attention on the athlete and the event. This is very important and please be respectful of this. Challenges There are many incidences where athletes, parents, and coaches feel as though they were judged incorrectly and unfairly. Unfortunately, it is a part of snowboarding that has happened for years. Therefore, as coaches we can only prepare our athletes to the best of our ability for each event and hope that their riding will speak for itself. However, in an event that a challenge is completely necessary (as may happen in BX), it is up to the Coach’s discretion as to whether or not he would like to bring the incident to the officials notice in a challenge.

Okemo Mountain Resort is the on-hill training facility for the program, with the academic building located at 53 Main Street in Ludlow. Students selected for the OMS program are chosen on various criteria. These include, but are not limited to; academic performance, athletic performance, recommendations, sending school support and extra-curricular activities. In addition, the ability to balance a very demanding physical training program with a rigorous academic schedule and the desire to become a better competitor are necessary elements for each student to embody. Okemo Mountain School’s Winter Term program begins the first week of November and continues through the end of March. The academics for the Winter Term students are conducted as an instruction based tutorial program. Every student has what is referred to as a “sending school”, the school that the student attends when not at Okemo Mountain School.
Target Term The Target Term Program gives OMS applicants another option for accessing top-notch training and academics. There are 3 enrollment options for a Target Term student with each program lasting 6 or 7 weeks. Students enrolled in a Target Term are given scheduled time with a tutor in each of their academic subjects. The Target Term program is effective for younger student athletes and/or those student athletes who are not ready for the five-month commitment of the Winter Term Program. Please contact the school at (802)228-1510 for Target Term dates. OMS Snowboarding OMS is an excellent option for those wanting to become the best rider that they can be while maintaining a high academic standard. Student athletes at the school have the luxury and ability to balance a strong academic curriculum with snowboarding and competing. OMS snowboarders enrolled in the full-term, will be exposed to a rigorous dryland training schedule in the month of November to physically prepare for on-snow training when the Mountain opens. Our second and third target terms are spent predominately on-snow with a strengthening and cardio regimen to accompany it. Snowboard Camps and Training Luke Bonang and Matt Fortuna host three OMS camps throughout the season. Each Camp has a different emphasis and includes on-snow training from 8:15am-11:30pm followed by dryland from 12:20-1:35pm and supervised study hall from 1:40pm-3:30pm. It’s a great opportunity for weekend athletes to experience the daily life of training and academics at a winter sports academy. Shred the Gnar Camp (STG): January 29th -February 2nd: The STG Camp is will cover all aspects of Freestyle and Racing. At least 75% of the time will be spent for freestyle enthusiasts in the parks and pipe dialing in technical tricks on rails, boxes and jumps and aerial maneuvers and rad grabs in the pipe. This is a great time to join us as the Okemo parks are always in tip-top shape! Racer orientated campers will train GS and Slalom gates along with spending a good deal of time training Boardercross specific drills and tactics. th Spring Cleanup Snowboard Camp (SCSC): March 15 -16th: The SCSC is the last Camp we offer. This 2 day camp Camp is designated for athletes who are competing in Nationals and need some extra preparating and conditioning prior to Nationals in April. Every discipline will be covered including, park and pipe, GS/Slalom (Groms), and Boardercross (Groms). Camp Schedule
