SKILLS

The skills developed throughout this university experience have
prepared me for a future career in the fashion industry. I believe
that the most important skills that I have acquired during my
time at university are the ability to work under pressure, com-
              munication and organizational skills.

According to Target Jobs (2020), these are also listed as the top
ten skills that potential employers are interested in. I also had
the opportunity to gain paid experience in retail as a customer
assistant, for the last three years. This is extremely beneficial
as ‘some large retailers offer training schemes in general store
management with the option of specialising in buying after
               completing the general programme.

This way, trainees are allowed to gain skills and experience in
all aspects of retail before specialising.‘ (Prospects, 2020) this
previous experience could potentially help with securing this
type of position after graduation. Working in retail also pre-
pared me to work with a team that is constantly changing and
adapt to any new challenges – crucial skills to break into the
                          fashion industry.

PERSONALITY

Regarding my personality, I believe that I am open-minded,
honest and an agile communicator. Based on the Belbin‘s
Team roles [Appendix1 ] I found out that I am a team worker
meaning that as an individual I am willing to co-operate and
work for the good of the team but also avoid conflicts and
in turn not always voice my opinion – and a Specialist and
Co-ordinator who is single-minded and dedicated to what
they do but also will work only on one task and forget to
look outside the box and expand (Belbin, 2020).

According to Myers-Briggs theory that is an adaptation of
the theory of psychological types produced by Carl Gustav
Jung. It is based on 16 personality types, which Jung viewed
as stereotypes (Jung 1921, p. 405). They act as useful
reference points to understand your unique personality
(Jung 1957, p. 304). According to the personality assessment,
my personality type matches to the Architect and the
                   Inventor types [Appendix].

                         Appendix 1: Belbin Team Roles

This means that I am an
energized by the challenge and are often inspired
by a problem that others perceive as impossible
to solve and I will often jump into a new situation
and trust that I will adapt as I go [Appendix 2-5].
These personality types perfectly align with my
selected career as I thrive on cooperation and wo
rk best in a harmonious environment where I can
                    support other
       people and encourage their growth.

5 year plan
                                     1 Year
Develop more industry experience, especially buying, merchandising and fashion journalism, by
looking for a paid internship or entry-level position and acquiring training, hopefully gaining
knowledge about buying and potentially merchandising as it would be extremely beneficial for
                                          the future.

                               2/3 years
Progress or change roles to utilize newly acquired skills, hopefully, an assistant buyer role that
would allow for further development of knowledge and understanding of the demands and ex-
                                  pectations of a fashion buyer.

                                   5 years
My long term goal is to acquire a role as a fashion buyer. According to Aileen Yu (2019), a buyer
is solely responsible for selecting and ordering what is sold in stores to ensure maximum profit.
This role demands focus on trend forecasting, business perspectives and communication skills.
Making sure to consciously develop leadership skills would be beneficial to achieve a position as
                                           a head buyer.
Life after university is not easy as there is a
significant number of new educated poten-
tial employees who all have similar
                             opportunities.

Challenges also include the changing cost of
living – London is significantly more
expensive than Winchester. There is also a
lot of variables in the role of a buyer as
                   according to Sutherland, E., (2018)

CHALLENGES
Buyers are faced with the almost Herculean
                   task of pleasing an increasingly
demanding and fickle shopper. Faced with
a buffet of choice from a variety of retailers
and brands, today’s shopper is trend
             hungry, price-conscious and armed with
                 more information than ever before.

To be a great buyer in the digital age
communication and collaboration is key as it
is important to know not only what is
going on in the industry but also be aware of
                     cultural and economic trends.
Strengths
Ability to work under pressure. I often had to

                                                                            S
train new members of staff and lead a team in
various situations. I could practise my skills in
constantly shifting retail landscape and adapt to
         the situation to achieve success.
During my time at university, I have developed
a wide range of communication skills through
    various presentations and digital projects.
I have developed a strength in being able to
conduct my independent research, select and
truly develop an issue and demonstrate my
ability to give a project a personal direction yet
apply industry knowledge to further illustrate
the points that are being made.

                                                                         Weaknesses

W I lack confidence in my digital skills – something
that I am extremely focused on improving as these
skills are crucial in the modern fashion landscape.

I have no buying experience and limited contacts
                                                                        in the industry.

INDUSTRY
REQUIREMENTS

Employers all around the world are looking for
graduates who are good critical thinkers – who
can bring an open mind, be self-reflective,
able to manipulate multiple perspectives and
challenge the conventional ways of thinking
                          (Cotrell, S.,2017).

The role of a buyer is one of the most desirable
ones in the fashion industry. This role combines
the knowledge of fashion and business – trend
forecasting and quantitative and analytical skills
             – it is where art meets science, where knowl-
edge of trends and the ability to use
Excel are equally important. [Appendix 6]

‘One minute the buyer could be talent scouting
the latest brands, the next minute he/she could
be presenting to the board why the buying
decision has been made to purchase a budding
designer’s collection based on consumer in-
                         sight.‘ (Yu, A., 2019).

To succeed in this career buyers need to have
the foresight and develop skills in people man-
agement and time management. It is rare to
find someone with an equal balance between
these qualities and skills and many buyers will
excel in some while being only adequate in
                                others.

             Enthusiasm and self-motivation are possibly
the most important elements as they cannot be
taught; they are the main qualities that,
together with experience or qualifications willh
elp the buyer to obtain that all-important first
                                 job.
CHALLENGE/
                                     PESTLE
The rapid spread of Coronavirus is causing a major economic and social disrup-
tion on a global scale as:
• Major retailers may need to close stores longer than the initial two weeks many
suggested, with layoffs expected across the industry.
• Burberry warns of a dire sales slump, projecting a decline of 70 to 80 per cent
                                   over the coming weeks.
• Goldman Sachs and Bain & Company expect activist investors and private equi-
ty firms to take advantage of low valuations to buy companies in trouble at a bargain
            — which could include almost any major player in retail right now.
• The digital influencer community has begun to post recommendations and
confessional content related to the novel coronavirus outbreak (BOF, 2020).

The coronavirus has caused the quarantine of more than 50 million people in China,
alongside travel and visa restrictions to more than 70 countries. Investment bank Jef-
feries estimates that Chinese buyers accounted for 40 per cent of the 281 billion euros
($305 billion) spent on luxury goods globally last year. Chinese consumers are the
fastest-growing luxury shopper demographic in the world, driving 80 per cent of the
past year’s sales growth in the luxury sector alone (High snobiety, 2020).

Trend forecaster Li Edelkoort told Dezeen, “Not many people understand what is hap-
pening to our world and economy right now. Often in companies, up to 90 per cent of
all goods are made in China from oil-derived substances such as plastic and polyester.
We will soon see shelves empty of shoes, phones, clothes and even toothpaste. We
will have a shortage of medical supplies and will see a stop in the endless production
of ugly souvenirs and useless goody bags. We already know that the design processes
for fall/winter products are not happening as they should be.”(High snobiety, 2020).

Coronavirus will have a damaging effect on the industry as a whole – a supply chain
has already been majorly disturbed, a global industry cannot function properly while
the borders are closed. This will cost the industry millions if not billions of pounds
and there will be a major loss of entry-level positions and opportunities for upcoming
                                graduates. [Appendix 7].

Re: Junior buyer

Dear Ms Tippin,

I am writing to apply for the junior buyer position at the Ladies Young Fashion boutique. Please
find my CV attached. I will graduate this summer from the University of Southampton with a BA
Hons degree in Fashion Marketing and Management (Management is my main speciality). I have
been developing research on a buying role and been looking for a new exciting opportunity to
progress and I have experience in the retail sector that would prove beneficial for this position.

My time at the Unversity of Southampton has let me develop extensive knowledge of product
development and distribution in the fast-paced reactive business. I regard myself as an
enthusiastic worker and enjoy working in a team, which I have done in my previous jobs as well as
during project work and seminar presentations on my course. I am interested in this position, as I
believe it will enable me to utilise the skills I have developed through my course and work
                                           experience to date.

My previous part-time job with Tesco has provided me with extensive experience of delivering
strong customer service as well as the sale and merchandising skills. Having practised English since
school, I have excellent language and communication skills and achieved a high score (8 out of 9)
for my IELTS (International English Testing System).

As you can see from my CV, I have developed a range of skills and experience which will enable me
to tackle any issues with determination. I have demonstrated the hard work, time-management
and flexibility which I believe are essential to success in a career in buying.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I hope that you will be persuaded that
I have the enthusiasm and commitment, as well as the necessary skills and experience, to make a
positive contribution to your business. I am available for interview at any time and look forward to
                                          hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
