A Welcome from the Headmaster Malvern College Summer School is pleased to open its doors to international pupils aged 8-16 for the summer holidays 2021. Our focus is to improve English language skills and allow pupils a unique opportunity of experiencing a taste of a classic British education, by one of the UK’s leading independent schools. Our courses are managed, hosted and run by the College, meaning we are able to deliver the same high standard of education and facilities as what our own pupils receive. The courses offered by Malvern College Summer School are all based on the same foundations we implement for our school activities – a strong academic focus, teamed with an enrichment programme that stimulates intellectual curiosity. Our programmes are developed to encompass not just classroom learning and workshops, but with regular activities to encourage the implementation of new-found skills in real-life scenarios. Our Approach Our programme involves a mix of classroom-based lessons and practical experiences that ensure pupils adopt a comprehensive approach to learning the English language. The Malvern Qualities Malvern Summer School is guided by The Malvern Qualities – a set of principles that underpin our approach to education and equip our pupils Resilience for life’s challenges ahead of them. This is supported by the highest Self-awareness standards of pastoral care, dedicated teaching staff and a programme designed to provide a unique experience of a Open-mindedness traditional yet forward-thinking British boarding school. These lessons are taught in small classes with a maximum of 16 pupils, with students separated according to their ability (following an initial test on arrival). They will focus on the key skills that are essential for effective communication and are the areas tested in English language examinations. Workshops Summer School pupils are able to select their choice of STEM, Creative, Music and Performing Arts workshops. This ensures a personalised Summer School experience that aims to deepen their use of the English language, as well as providing an opportunity to take part in wider educational and enjoyable activities. Creative Arts Malvern College offers a rich co-curricular arts programme, which is encouraged through our Summer School programmes. Pupils have access to The Lindsay Art Centre – a purpose-built space with a focus on Fine Art and Photography, the Chapman Technology Centre – for modern design, as well as purpose-built kitchens and generic crafts spaces. Sports and Outdoor Pursuits Embracing typical British sports and activities, pupils will have the chance to experience a wide variety of these both individually and as part of a team, on and off the school campus site. Enrichment Being able to excel and lead in an unseen future requires new skill sets beyond the traditional classroom education. As part of the Malvern College Summer School programme, we teach pupils the skills they need to solve complex challenges, identify creative solutions and equip them with the ability and openness to communicate in an appropriate manner. Activites may include: Leadership Skills Public Speaking Workshops Sustainability Debating INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL 2021 27
Excursions Excursions include one full day and two half day trips per week. Depending on which week you join us, this may include visits to cities, towns and villages of cultural interest, with pre-arranged itineraries such as: Stratford-upon-Avon; a market town with more than 800 years of history and the birthplace of William Shakespeare. At just over 30 miles away, this day trip will include a visit to the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, a boat trip on the River Avon and entry to the Butterfly Farm. Oxford; coined ‘the city of dreaming spires’ by victorian poet Matthew Arnold, after its stunning architecture. It is also home to The University of Oxford, royalty and scholars. Pupils will have time to enjoy this historical city with guided visits to New College - renowned for its education, striking architecture and scenes in Harry Potter. London; the capital city of England with tourist attractions including Big Ben, The London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The London Dungeons Museum and much more! Bourton on the Water; a charming English village – regularly voted one of the prettiest in England, situated in the heart of the Cotswolds and within an hour’s travel of Malvern College. Excursions continued... Other full day trips include: West Midlands Safari Park with a safari experience and time to enjoy park rides. Boundless Outdoors Centre with activities including high ropes and team building tasks. Walk the Malvern Hills, an eight mile long walk reaching 425m above sea level Warwick Castle with a full tour and workshops to experience life over 950 years ago. Legoland Windsor a chance to take part in lego inspired theme park rides and workshops. Half day activities may include: An evening at Malvern Theatre Ice Skating Light Railway Engineering experience Bowling Escape Rooms Kayaking Laser Quest Forest School Various fun and games activities will also be included as part of the daily timetable, encouraging pupils to make friends and enjoy their time at Malvern College. Together with teachers and support staff, they ensure that the course provides a quality educational experience for pupils, as well as being fun and stimulating too. Sharing a desire for delivering the best experience, each team member employed by the Summer School is carefully selected and recruited for their expertise and experience. We adhere to a rigorous recruitment process, which ensures staff have passed all relevant pre-employment checks. Your child’s welfare is our number one priority. INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL 2021 35
Accommodation Accommodation is provided on site in single, twin or small dormitory rooms, with shared bathroom facilities. Girls and boys are separated either on different floors or in respective buildings, each cared for by our experienced pastoral team. Each boarding house has access to their own dining areas, where breakfast is served each day, as well as a variety of snacks. Common rooms provide a space for pupils to relax with televisions, games, pool tables/table football, books and other provisions. INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL 2021 37

Pupils are served breakfast, lunch and dinner during their stay, with a choice of Lamees – Parent, 2019 different cuisines to choose from. Meals are taken in the Gryphon Room where pupils dine with their friends, and refreshments are available from boarding houses throughout the day. While off-site on excursions, either packed lunches or more formal dining arrangements are provided. Pupils may also like to visit our on-site café, the Malvern College Coffee Shop which has a range of hot and cold drinks, plus sweet and savoury snacks for purchase. Please note that we are able to cater for most religious and/or dietary requirements, including allergies and intolerances.
