People: God’s holy mountain is the joy of all the earth. Leader: We ponder your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. People: As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Leader: Tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. People: God will be our guide forever. Leader: Come, let us worship God. Hymn 612 We Praise You, O God Kremser 1 We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; in grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you; we bless your holy name; glad praises we sing.
2 We worship you, God of our fathers and mothers; through trial and tempest our guide you have been. When perils o’ertake us, you will not forsake us, and with your help, O Lord, our struggles we win. 3 With voices united our praises we offer and gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise. With you, Lord, beside us, your strong arm will guide us. To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise! Prayer of Confession (in unison) Rev. Kelley Shin Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Forgive us our sin. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image…(silent confession)…Amen. Assurance of Pardon Congregational Response #581 Glory Be to the Father Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Scripture Reading Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, 2 they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. 3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; 4 and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) 5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6 He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ 8 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.” Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is 14 nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, 22 adultery, 21 avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Sermon From Within Rev. Kelley Shin Hymn 345 In an Age of Twisted Values Church United 1 In an age of twisted values we have lost the truth we need. In sophisticated language we have justified our greed. By our struggle for possessions we have robbed the poor and weak. Hear our cry and heal our nation; your forgiveness, Lord, we seek. 2 We have built discrimination on our prejudice and fear. Hatred swiftly turns to cruelty if we hold resentments dear. For communities divided by the walls of class and race,
hear our cry and heal our nation; show us, Lord, your love and grace. 3 When our families are broken, when our homes are full of strife, when our children are bewildered, when they lose their way in life, when we fail to give the aged all the care we know they need, hear our cry and heal our nation; help us show more love, we plead. 4 We who hear your word so often choose so rarely to obey. Turn us from our willful wandering; give us truth to light our way. In the power of your Spirit come to cleanse us, make us new; hear our cry and heal our nation till our nation honors you. Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Pastoral Prayer (concluding with the Lord’s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, Ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Invitation and Prayer of Discipleship Hymn 850 In a Deep, Unbounded Darkness Divinum Mysterium 1 In a deep, unbounded darkness, long before the first light shone, you, O God, beyond all merit worked a wonder faith makes known:
in your mercy, in your mercy, you embraced us as your own, evermore and evermore. 2 Though our world is ever-changing, you are constant, firm, and sure, faithful to your covenant promise. Trusting you, we live, secure: singing praises, singing praises, long as heart and breath endure, evermore and evermore. 3 Joy transforms our lips to boasting only in your matchless grace, sending Christ to dwell among us, Word made flesh in time and space: Friend and Savior, Friend and Savior, in whose life we glimpse your face, evermore and evermore. 4 God of Hagar, God of Sarah, God of nomad Abraham; God of Miryam, God of Moses, Fiery Pillar, great I am: lead us homeward, lead us homeward, to the love-feast of the Lamb, evermore and evermore. COVID Safety Update Every month the Session reviews Fairmont’s response to COVID-19 in our community and necessary safeguards. After reviewing the latest medical data showing that the seven day average number of new cases in the state of Ohio has dropped to 71, and after receiving medical advice from our own physicians, the Session removed the requirement for fully vaccinated individuals to wear masks in worship at Fairmont. The Session still requests that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks for their own safety and especially to safeguard children under the age of 12 who cannot currently be vaccinated. We also encourage everyone who wishes to wear a mask for whatever reason to continue to do so. Masks will be provided at all entrances if you should desire one. We strive to make everyone feel both safe and comfortable in worship at Fairmont. We will continue to diligently monitor conditions and make changes when necessary.
