Machin Messenger—Page 3 MACHIN VOLUNTEER FIRE & FIRST RESPONSE DEPARTMENT P.O. BOX 249 VERMILION BAY, ON P0V 2V0 FAX: 866-505-3447 machinfire@bellnet.ca and on Facebook @machinfire “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” Fire Prevention Week: October 4 – 10 This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!”. This theme fo- cuses on the prevention of cooking fires and staying fire safe in the kitchen. Fire safety in the kitchen is a very timely theme as cooking fires continue to be the leading cause of home fires in Ontario. “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” is to remind everyone to stay safe in the kitchen and to take the simple steps listed below to prevent kitchen fires in their home. Simple steps to “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” include: Stand by your pan. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking and turn off the stove if you must leave the kitchen. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Keep a proper fitting lid near the stove. If a pot of oil catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Do not move the pot. Never throw water on a burning pot. Clear the clutter. Keep anything that burns - plastic utensils, dishcloths, paper towels - a safe dis- tance from the stove. Cook responsibly. To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert. You will not be alert if you have con- sumed alcohol or drugs. Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves when using the stove. Loose, dangling clothing can easily catch fire. Keep young kids one metre away from the stove. Turn pot handles away from the stove’s edge so that they cannot be easily knocked off. If you burn yourself while cooking, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes. If the burn is severe, seek medical attention. Cooking happens in homes every day, and it needs to be done responsibly to ensure it is done safely. It is your responsibility to protect yourself and your family from fire. Always remain alert and stay in the kitch- en while cooking. It only takes a few minutes for a dangerous fire to start. If your smoke alarm frequently activates when you are cooking or using the shower, DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY. Try moving the smoke alarm, purchasing a smoke alarm with a hush feature, or replacing ionization alarms with photoelectric alarms. The law requires smoke alarms to be installed on every storey of your home and outside sleeping areas. Carbon Monoxide alarms must be installed adjacent to all sleeping areas if home has a fuel-burning appli- ance, a fireplace or an attached garage. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can only help save your life if they are working – test alarms every month.
