It’s Always Great to be in the Out-of-Doors BY PASTOR BOB STOVER “This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise. The morning light, the lily white, declare their maker’s praise!” I remember visiting The Wilderness Canoe Base some years ago, and seeing this odd-looking cabin. As I tried to enter, I realized that, though the entire building wasn’t very large, there were many doors to choose from. I was then told that only one of them actually could be opened to permit me to enter. You see, the camp director was known for his good stewardship of funds and his resource- fulness, as well as his “punny” sense of humor. He explained that, since his ministry was remote from urban development and surrounded by nature, at least one of his facilities needed to be constructed entirely “out of doors.” It certainly made us laugh, though I can’t say that I ever went to such ex- tremes at my own Bible camps just to make a joke. It has been such a delight to worship out-of-doors with our Scandian Grove congregation these past several months, without walls, and without masks! Ever since I was a young boy, I have always felt it to be special, inspiring, more enjoyable, and very freeing to praise God in natural surroundings. Whether around a campfire, just after sunrise, or on the shores of a lake, worshipping outdoors al- ways “declares our maker’s praise.” Not that we worship our church buildings or hide in our pews, but singing under blue skies, feeling the sun, and hearing the birds sing and the rustle of the wind in the trees puts some things in perspective. We learn in the book of Genesis, that God created the entire world and everything in it before he de- cided to place people in it to rule over it. I have to believe that God sheds tears day after day as he watches the very species he created go extinct on his beautiful planet earth. Worshipping outdoors reminds us of our place in the universe: we are but clay pots in the hands of the great potter. We find ourselves back in the garden of Eden, remembering that we are not “gods,” but we are “God’s!” I hope you enjoy worshipping outdoors as much as I do. I know we can’t pull off that kind of service in mid-January, though I’m told that, during the pandemic, some churches did exactly that. But while we are able, let’s embrace the beauty of God’s creation on our 2nd Sundays of the month. Yes, we may have a few more distractions outside. And yes, we have to deal with the bright sun, the heat, the wind, the bugs…but we also have our Sunday routine shaken up in some good ways: our voices harmonize with all of creation; the more informal setting can help us relax and focus more on God. For those who don’t really care for being outdoors on Sunday morning, thank you for accommodat- ing me and those who do enjoy this kind of worship. Summer will come to a close all too soon, and we will always worship in the sanctuary predominantly. In the meanwhile, I hope you enjoy our out- door services of July and August. Have a great summer! GENTLE REMINDERS! If you are the last ones to leave, make sure to turn off lights, shut doors & look around before you leave the church. Page 2

I didn’t have to vacate my room because Sally would share my bed. Get- ting ready for bed was chaotic to say the least.
