BandiWords July 2018 Attendance for June = 187 Newsletter of the Roleystone Average per session = 11 Men’s Community Shed Inc. www.roleymensshed.com.au EVENTS Chairman’s Notes: The day we were all expecting occurred this month, with the demolition of the old school buildings. By the time you read this all of the wooden section along with the library, together with some vegetation, will have disappeared from the site. You may notice we have removed our Shed sign from the front of the premises to ensure it doesn’t get damaged. Thankfully the generator is providing all the power we need and the new entry from Jarrah Road is working well. We have been inundated with visitors this month (maybe there’s an election?), but it has been heart warming to see that we are a highly regarded and liked Community organisation by all involved. It was good to have a long time supporter of ours, Hon Donna Faragher, visit us again. BIRTHDAYS We have started on the Development Application for the new Shed at Springdale Park, which will probably take the next month or so. Once everything is in place and we also have the Bushfire Management Plan, George we can then submit it. After the City of Armadale have approved the development, it then is forwarded to the WAPC (the Shed will be on John S their land). Once they approved the development, we can then apply for the Building Permit, which if all goes well, should follow on fairly quickly. It’s all two paces forward, one step back, but I am sure we will PROJECTS prevail! Don’t forget to clean up your work area before you leave the Shed. I should get the whistles soon, so listen out! BandiWords July 2018 Visitors! On 12 June we had not one, but two sets of visitors! First to visit, were four members accompanied by their teacher Jenny, from Kelmscott Senior High The Trailer School. This is the third year we have hosted them visiting us as part their year 12 Health Class, which covers the benefits of a Men’s Shed in the community. Gas Bottle BBQs Wood Bending This was swiftly followed by a long time supporter of our Shed, Hon. Donna Faragher MLC, accompanied by the prospective Liberal candidate for the Darling Range, Hon. Alyssa Hayden MLC. We were able to bring both of them both up to date with the development our new shed and gave Alyssa a guided tour to see what we get up to. As a parting gift we presented Alyssa with a wooden trinket box made by our resident turning expert, Murray, with which she was delighted. A fitting reminder of her visit to our Say Shed. “Cheese!” www.roleymensshed.com.au No. 69 2 of 7
BandiWords July 2018 Visit from our Labor Candiate Not wishing to be left out, on 21 June we had a visit from Hon Matthew Swinbourn MLC who accompanied prospective Labor candidate, Tania Lawrence. Also with them was Shed member Henry Zelones OAM JP, Mayor of the City of Armadale. Once again we had a tour of the Shed followed by an update on our new Shed’s progress. Tania was particularly taken by Colin’s answer to the Space Race, his wood burning powered rocket! Murray came up trumps by providing, at short notice, another small gift as something to remember us by, which was presented to Tania. Ron shows off his paper towel and tissue box holder. Tania was very impressed with the standard of workmanship Cheesy Grin moment! Tania inspects how the rocket is fuelled www.roleymensshed.com.au No. 69 3 of 7
BandiWords July 2018 Rush Job for Dogswest Please support our On Saturday 26 May, Gail from Dogswest visited the Shed to ask if we sponsors could make 22 trophies, similar to the ones we have provided for the last two years. We were delighted to accept the job, the only snag being that they had to be ready by Friday 1 June! However, thanks to the industrious work by Neil and Kris and working on Wednesday, as well as our usual Shed days, the task was completed by late Thursday afternoon. In a text received from Gail after she had picked them up, she said " Thank you for all the work you did on our “late” order, really appreciate your efforts in getting the trophies done in time for the State Agility Trial. I thought you might like to see a picture of our trophy table. We put a plaque on the trophies recognising our sponsor and with it the info about the award. After the prize giving day she also let us know "Great job, many positive comments including the fact that they were locally made (we told the competitors who made them) and that they’re not plastic rubbish." www.roleymensshed.com.au No. 69 4 of 7

To stop drilling a blind hole with an ‘Auger’ bit, the bit must be rotated anti-clockwise for at least one turn to disengage the screw thread, then continue rotating clockwise as the bit is withdrawn to remove all the cut chip. In the mid-19th century, Russell Jennings patented a protruding spurs extension to the ‘Auger’ bit making it into a clean cutting tool by the addition of protruding spurs on the outer end of the 2 radial cutting edges, which slice into the wood around the circumference of the hole, allowing easier clearance of the material from the bottom of the hole. The ‘Auger’ bits do not cut well in the end grain of wood, as the central screw tends to pull out of the grain fibres and the radial cutting edges have trouble cutting across the long wood fibres.
