DAY 1: 13TH JULY ARRIVAL AT CHANDIGARH DISTANCE: 0 Kms (0 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Chandigarh serves as a base this SOUL Iconic Himalayan drive 2019. Arrive at the Vivanta by Taj, Chandigarh, and put yourself into ‘drive’ mode! Leh Pangong Check-In early and visit the sprawling gardens that this city is famous Tso for; the Rock Garden and the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden to name a few. A 212km drive awaits us the next day and an early start is crucial, so make sure you are well settled-in and ready! DAY 2: 14TH JULY CHANDIGARH TO RAMPUR BUSHAHR DISTANCE: 240 KMS (8 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar After breakfast and checkout, we begin the first leg of our drive. Lunch is taken care of, with scrumptious Himachali cuisine en-route. Our pitstop for the night is Rampur Bushahr, a former princely state capital Leh Pangong built on the banks of the river Satluj. Rampur is a bustling town that Tso maintains an ample measure of its past and is still a melting pot of the region’s cultures. It has numerous historical palaces and temples, including the Sarahan and Mahakali shrines. Rampur is renowned for its handspun blankets that are popularly known "Rampuri Chaddar." DAY 3: 15TH JULY RAMPUR TO SANGLA (& CHITKUL) DISTANCE: 102 KMS (4.5 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Another day, and yet another adventure… The 3.5 hrs to Sangla sees us traverse expansive and stunning landscapes. We drive into the Baspa Valley and soon see ourselves Leh Pangong in Sangla. Located at the center of the valley, Sangla is the locus of Tso exploration and is packed with numerous trekking trails. Bering Nag temple, Kamru village and fort, Sangla Buddhist temple are a few of the sights that Sangla is known for. Post lunch, we drive to Chitkul, the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border. The Indian road ends here. Of particular interest are the houses with either Sarchu slate or wooden plank roofs. DAY 4: 16TH JULY SANGLA TO KAZA DISTANCE: 237 KMS (8.5 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Our third day sees us enter the Spiti Valley, a cold desert mountain valley. "Spiti" means "The Middle Land", i.e. the land between Tibet and India. We visit the oldesnt Buddhist monastery in India, the Leh Pangong Tabo Monastery. It is known for numerous frescoes that adorn its Tso walls which depict tales from the Buddhist pantheon. We resume our journey and reach Kaza in the early evening. DAY 5: 17TH JULY KAZA TO KAZA DISTANCE : 0 KMS (0 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Kaza is situated along the Spiti river at an elevation of 3,650 metres. Kaza is overlooked by mountain ridges on all sides. Leh Dhankar was the erstwhile capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom Pangong during the 17th century. Dhankar Monastery was built as a fort Tso monastery overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers. We then visit the Ki Monastery, which is set atop a conical hillock, this is the largest gompa in Spiti and the views of it from the surrounding hillsides are irresistibly pictorial. This serene village lies along the banks of River Bhaga. Jispa is truly blissful with interminable natural beauty. DAY 7: 19TH JULY JISPA TO SARCHU DISTANCE : 79 KMS (3.5 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar We start off early, and 2 hours later, we pass through the Baralacha La Pass. This pass connects Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh. We spend the night in Sarchu, which is well-known for its tented Leh accommodation in the high Himalayas. The camp is situated at an Pangong altitude of 4,290 metres. DAY 8: 20TH JULY SARCHU TO LEH DISTANCE : 259 KMS (9.5 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Driving from Sarchu to Leh is like a roller coaster ride, with its many ascents and descents. We cross three passes, of which Nakee La is the third highest pass on the Manali Leh highway. One can almost mistake Leh Pangong the mountains for becoming the clouds… We arrive in Leh later that Tso evening and enjoy a much-deserved repast. DAY 10: 22ND JULY LEH TO PANGONG TSO DISTANCE : 224 KMS (7.5 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar Nestled amongst the high peaks, at an altitude of around 14,270 feet, the Pangong Lake is 134 kilometers in length and stretches from Eastern Ladakh to Tibet. The clear brackish waters transform Leh between different shades of blue and green, with the shifting Pangong position of the sun. The landscape is rough and dramatic. You are Tso humbled by the fact that the Lake is almost as long as the road from here to Leh. DAY 11: 23RD JULY PANGONG TSO TO HUNDAR DISTANCE : 240 KMS (8 HRS) Key Highlights Hundar By now you’d be used to the journey and looking forward to its next leg, via Shyok and Agham. This is a truly difficult part of the trip and will test the capabilities of your vehicles. We break for lunch and visit Leh the oldest and largest monastery in the Nubra valley, the Diskit Pangong Monastery. We reach Hundar in the evening. This village famous for Tso its surrounding sand dunes and Bactrian camels. You can choose to traverse these dunes via ATV or camel. Drive FAQs Visit the Pangong Tso, a lake nestled amongst the high peaks, at an altitude of around 14,270 feet. The lake is 134 kilometers in length and stretches from Eastern Ladakh, and into Tibet. The crystal-clear waters of the lake transforms between shades of blue and green, throughout the day. If you think you have seen enough of Ladakh, well think again. Khardung La is claimed to be the world’s highest motorable pass, and figures aside, this pass is sure to be one of the show-stoppers of your journey. But, don’t trust us on this; after all, seeing (it in person) is believing Revel in the company of your fellow SOUL travellers as you bond over 1500 odd kilometres of experiences, exploration and transitory emancipation from the world. What’s the weather like during the drive? During this time, Leh is an unparalleled paradise, with clear, stunning views, warm and sunny weather – the average temperature range is about 5– 32°C. However, we recommend you carry enough sun protection (sunglasses, sun screen & caps) and warm clothes (jackets/ windcheaters) as the weather may change during the course of our drive. What are the roads going to be like? You will be driving through high mountain terrains. The roads can be challenging at some places. Driving with caution is recommended, especially if you haven’t driven in such terrain earlier. Though a 4x4 is preferred, a 4x2 with some skilful driving can keep you in good stead too.
