First Communion class is for all 3rd graders and older students who have not gone through instruction, along with their parents. During the class, we will learn about the Passover and celebrate a Passover meal, learn about the Last Supper, and how we, as Lutheran Christians, understand the Sacrament of Holy Communion and the many different ways Communion is served to Lutheran congregations. While the instruction is aimed at the children, you as parents are encouraged to come and participate. The time together will be one of learning and fun, so we encourage all parents to attend. First Communion class will be held in person on Monday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. with First Communion on Passion Sunday, March 28. In Person Distribution of Communion: Communion for those attending worship in person is currently being served after the closing hymn. Please wait for an usher to invite you to come forward. If you are a baptized Christian who upon self-examination recognizes your need for forgiveness and who trusts that the Crucified and Risen Lord is pre- sent in this meal, forgiving and gathering His people into a serving community, please join us. • Holy Communion will be served in a continuous line. • Communion is served by wafer and individual glass to minimize the chances of Covid transmission. • Please maintain six foot distancing while waiting. • Extend your hand to have a wafer dropped into your hand. A small glass of wine will be placed on a serving table by the pastoral assistant for you to pick up. • Communicants who require a gluten free wafer or do not want wine, please inform the pastor or the communion assistant. • If for any reason you choose not receive Holy Communion, you are still invited to come forward, cross your arms across your chest and you will receive a blessing. • Children who have not received instruction for communion are invited to receive a noncontact blessing. • For those unable to come forward, please remain in your pew and you will be served. Singing in Worship: After consulting with the Reopening Team; evaluating current information, studies, and trends regarding masked singing and spread; and conversation with the Church Council, masked and limited congregational sing- ing in our worship service is allowed, using the following parameters: • Everyone in the sanctuary (with the exception of the pastor and worship assistant for video purposes and organist for directing) will remain masked at all times indoors and practice distancing as previously designated. • Singing should only be done at speaking or humming level and with masks on. • The pulpit side of the sanctuary will be reserved for those who wish to sing, the choir side for those who do not wish to sing. Designated social distancing remains in effect. • All hymns will continue to be two verses only. The liturgy will continue to be sung. • The other expectations outlined in our Reopening Booklet remain in effect. • We will continue to monitor trend reports and recommendations from the Orange County Health Department and local medical agencies in case there is a need to change our current practices and gathering. • Everyone needs to continue to monitor their own health and determine the acceptable risks regarding your in-person participation in worship and congregational life at St. John, the same as your other daily activity choices. • We will also provide encouragement to the congregation to continue in the recommended practices for healthy life- style choices during this pandemic as a sign of the love of neighbor we are called to by Jesus.
