THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER –B-

On this Third Sunday of Easter it is comforting to hear Peter telling the people that all that happened was truly
because of ignorance. He takes advantage of this, in order to let them know that from now on they should welcome Jesus as
the One sent by God, and that there is no other. When he speaks, notice that he does it without resentment, and does not
even suggest that there should be vengeance. On the contrary, his purpose is to invite all to repentance, in order to receive
the love and mercy that comes from the Father.
Those who believe don’t have to feel condemned for life, even when we fail. This reminds me of a bumper-sticker
that reads: «Christians are not perfect, but forgiven». In the First Epistle of St. John, we hear him joyfully announcing the fact that
from now on there is forgiveness and reconciliation towards oneself and others. All Christians are invited to live out their
vocation to holiness, and God’s mercy is so complete and divine, that even when we are unfaithful, He stills gives us the
opportunity to return to Him.
Taking a look at today’s Gospel it is important to remind ourselves that the disciples from Emmaus who went back
to Jerusalem after having recognized Jesus on the way, and who later on broke bread with the Lord, are present in this pas-
sage. The events of the Passion had not been completely assimilated yet; they still cannot succeed in relating to the Jesus
with whom they lived, and the now glorious Christ. They still were not clear about the mission that awaited them. That is why
it is so important to have a clear image of who Jesus really is.
The disciples think that Jesus is a ghost, and they were so confused at this moment, that even Jesus was astonished by their
reaction.
We have so many different images of Jesus. The only image that the disciples had was of the Jesus who lived
among them. That is the reason why the Lord had to keep on instructing them. Our CHALLENGE is to clarify the image
of the Lord that we have in our own lives. And, there is no better way than to become more and more familiar with His
Word and, of course, by receiving the Sacraments. We are the ones who were left in charge, and when one is in charge of
something, that person has to know and be familiar with his/her responsibilities. It is both a duty and a privilege. The Lord
Jesus continued teaching His disciples, so that they would not be ignorant about Himself as the Messiah, and about His
teachings. Let us remember that today’s readings are reminders that it is important for all of us to keep on learning about
Jesus as a Savior and as a Teacher. It doesn’t take but a few minutes to read a biblical passage or a page or two of a spiritual
reading of our choice.
TERCER DOMINGO DE PASCUA –B-

En este tercer domingo de Pascua, nos reconforta oír a Pedro decirle al pueblo: todo lo que pasó fue debido a la ignorancia.
Se aprovecha de esta oportunidad y les dice que desde ahora en adelante deben recibir a Cristo como el Enviado por el Pa-
dre, y que no existe otro. Pedro habla sin resentimiento alguno y no los incita a la violencia; todo lo contrario: él invita a
todos a que se arrepientan para así recibir el amor y la misericordia que viene del Padre.
Los que creen, no deben sentirse condenados aun cuando pecamos. San Juan anuncia alegremente que de ahora
en adelante hay perdón y reconciliación hacia los demás y nuestra persona. A todos los cristianos se les invita a vivir su vo-
cación hacia la santidad. La misericordia de Dios es tan completa y divina que pese a nuestras debilidades, Él nos da la
oportunidad de regresar a Él una y otra vez.
Es importante fijarse que los dos discípulos de Emaús que caminaron con Jesús hacia Jerusalén en el Evangelio de
hoy, que lo reconocieron al partir el pan, aparecen en este relato. La Pasión de Cristo todavía no se había asimilado comple-
tamente. Ellos aún no sabían cómo relacionarse con Jesús, pese a que comieron y vivieron junto a Él, y ahora que es el glo-
rioso Cristo, no lo reconocen. Ellos no estaban seguros sobre la misión que les esperaba. Ellos piensan que Jesús es un fan-
tasma, y estaban tan confundidos, que el mismo Jesús se impresionó.
Nosotros hoy día tenemos muchas imágenes de Cristo. La única imagen que los discípulos tenían era la de Jesús en
persona -su forma física y no la de un resucitado. Por eso es que Jesús tenía que seguir instruyéndolos. El reto que nos pre-
senta este Evangelio es que formemos nuestra propia imagen. A nosotros nos dejaron a cargo y tenemos que aceptar nues-
tras responsabilidades. Las lecturas de hoy nos instan a leer la Biblia a aprender más de nuestra religión. Cristo continuó
instruyéndolos porque bien sabía que lo iban a necesitar.
