SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ May 10, 2015 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR PARISH The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July SAINT 1, 2008 by the merger of PATRICK three historic parishes 404 E. Main St. located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is HOLY offered every day in both REDEEMER churches. The parish 120 W. Johnson St. rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to CATHEDRAL erect a new cathedral on the PLACE same site (at West Main and W. Washington Fairchild). In the meantime, Ave. at Henry St. an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there. www.isthmuscatholic.org Facebook.com/CathedralParishMadison

S. Supreme Court and the attor- neys who would argue in favor of the traditional understanding of marriage in a case that would be heard a couple of days later. A visitor at Mass that day did Holy Redeemer Church not like the prayer so much. I got an West Johnson Street email to tell me so. (one half block off State Street) I’ve long presumed that a lot of Catholic Saint Patrick Church people are not entirely with the Church East Main Street on this issue. And I think that the vast (three blocks east of the Capitol Square) majority of those who don’t support the
Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 3 May 10, 2015 MASS SCHEDULE FROM THE RECTOR Monday, May 11 – Easter Weekday continued . . . 12:10 pm at St. Patrick Church’s position are operating out of good motives. † Gerald Klein 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer It’s quite simple. They want to be kind. They want to be fair. If there † Roy Crapser are people in our country who want something . . . if there’s something that would make them happy . . . it just seems mean-spirited to deprive Tuesday, May 12 – SS. Nereus & Achilleus them of it. I wouldn’t want to deprive a homosexual person of a driv- 12:10 pm at St. Patrick er’s license or the right to drink out of public water fountains – why † Margaret Finn should I deprive that person of the ability to marry? It’s no skin off my 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer nose, if you will. Special Intention: William Paltz In the arguments before the Supreme Court on April 28 th, a couple of Wednesday, May 13 – Our Lady of Fatima points were raised that can (I hope) help people of good will to see that 12:10 pm at St. Patrick the defense of marriage is not a mean or arbitrary effort to deprive † Lou Bickel someone of a good thing that would make them happy. 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer The first issue concerns children. For the arguments last month, six † Anthony Paltz adult children of gay parents filed briefs in favor of traditional marriage with the Supreme Court, citing the suffering that they experienced Thursday, May 14 – St. Matthias growing up as they did. One of them, Dawn Stefanowicz described 12:10 pm at St. Patrick growing up (with two brothers) in a chaotic world dominated by her Special Intention father and his many male companions. I will spare you the lurid de- 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer tails . . . but there are lots of details, and they’re very lurid, and they are † James Lawrence a matter of public record. Other now-adult children spoke about their own gender confusion, pressure to conform to a gay political agenda Friday, May 15 – St. Isidore and feelings of isolation. Also notable was the longing for the 12:10 pm at St. Patrick “missing” parent of the other gender. Poor Souls in Purgatory 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer Kay Faust, one of the now-adult children, put the issue very cogently: Poor Souls in Purgatory There is “no reason to write out of the civil code the need for a mother and a father.” And “this court must either side with adult desires or Saturday, May 16 – Easter Weekday side with children’s rights. But it cannot do both.” 8:00 am at Holy Redeemer Poor Souls in Purgatory The second point I would like to mention was raised by Justice Alito. He cited a prior legal case in which Bob Jones University (a fundamen- 5:00 pm at St. Patrick (Vigil) talist institution) was found to violate the civil rights of its students by † Donald L. Evans having a policy against interracial dating. Because of that, Bob Jones 6:30 pm in Spanish at Holy Redeemer (Vigil) University was stripped of its tax-exempt status. One can be happy † Antonia Ortega Torres with that particular outcome. But now the question, as Justice Alito put it, becomes: If the Supreme Court now finds a constitutional right to Sunday, May 17 Ascension of the Lord redefine marriage, will any institution that refuses to comply be at risk of losing its tax exempt status? The answer, given by the U. S. Solicitor 9:00 am at Holy Redeemer General arguing for same-sex marriage was, “. . . it’s certainly going to People of the Cathedral Parish be an issue.” 11:00 am at St. Patrick Special Intention: Sr. Jean Schuster I try not to be an alarmist, but I’m a little alarmed! One can say here (50th Anniversary) something similar to what was said above on the issue of children’s 11:00 am in Spanish at Holy Redeemer rights: the court can either side with a right to redefine marriage or it † Maria Eugenia Ruiz can side with religious freedom. But it cannot do both. † Maria y Rita Morales The unhappy visitor who wrote to me urged the acceptance of gay mar- 5:00 pm at Holy Redeemer riage saying, “This is a Galileo moment.” It doesn’t look like a “Galileo † Fr. Kevin Cassidy moment” to me. It looks like a Thomas More moment. 6:45 pm in Spanish at Holy Redeemer † Isidro Gutierrez Garcia Msgr. Kevin D. Holmes
