Reflections by Fr. John
Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them.
He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance.
The LORD said, "There--anoint him, for this is the one!"
                   Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed David in the presence of his brothers;
and from that day on the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David. (1 Samuel 16)

King David is one of the most interesting characters in the Old Testament. I
thank he is interesting for two main reasons, he is a reflection of us and secondly he is
the great example of receiving forgiveness.

I know that in the annals of history King David is understood and accepted
amongst some of the greatest leaders in world history, his name is mentioned among
Julius and august Caesar, Alexander the Great, Charlemagne, and our very own
George Washington to name a few. However, here in our reflection I want to look at
the man from the perspective of faith.

As a teenage boy, God singles him out to be the new King of Israel and more
importantly that the spirit of the LORD rushed upon him and in another place, David
is described, "as a man after God's own heart". It is clear that David ws faithful and righteous. However, upon
becoming king some of the world's entrapments began to get the best of him, some pride, some ambition, some
entitlement, and more than likely a fw other vices until he crossed the line very seriously in conspiring to murder and
adultery.

David does not go unpunished for theses crimes and sins. Tough to imagine that someone who had the spirit of
the LORD rush upon him could turn to this type of sinful life. Yet, this could happen to the best of us if we begin to
slowly give into temptation and allow sin to compound on tope of sin. When this roller coaster begins the danger is
that we justify our actions as I am sure David did. We are much like David, though we may not be murderers or
adulterers we nevertheless fall to sin and if we are honest, sometime serious ones. The Spirit of the LORD also rushed
upon us at our Baptism when the water was poured over us and we were anointed with the sacred chrism.

But as I said David is an intriguing figure because he does not die in his sin, rather he humbles himself and
surrenders himself totally to the mercy of God regardless of the penalties and consequences of his sins. In that humble
and contrite heart, God forgives David and continues to bless him. David lives to an old age and knows that his son,
Solomon, will succeed him, but more importantly he knows the Messiah will be blood of his blood as Mary is a
descendant of David.

My friends, no matter our past and how grievous our sins, just like David we can be forgiven and even blessed,
however, we must be humble as David was and to be truly blessed we must become people after God's ow heart.

God bless you,

Father John
