Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From Father Jim April 11, 2021 Today is the Second Sunday of Easter, bringing our eight-day celebration to its fulfillment. Today is also the Feast of Divine Mercy wherein we call to mind the great gift that Jesus has won for us through his passion and resurrection: The forgiveness of sins and the outpouring of God’s Mercy. First, we need to understand that there is no mercy without justice. Justice, as one of the Cardinal Virtues, is a moral quality or habit which perfects the will and inclines it to render to each and to all what belongs to them. So, for us, justice means giving each his or her due. Justice to God means giving him everything because he is infinitely good and perfect, and we were cre- ated by him to render praise, glory, and devotion to him. God’s justice towards us means we receive everything we deserve from him, for good or ill. Mercy, on the other hand, is the virtue that moves us to have compassion on others and, as far as possible, to alleviate their sufferings. This is precisely what the Lord does in his Mercy for us and why he sent his Son to take on our sinful, weak, and broken humanity. He did it to raise us up and open the doors to our glorification. In justice we deserve nothing of the sort, but in mercy, well, Heaven is the limit. I think it best to listen to the words of Jesus to St. Faustina in regard to the Mercy he has poured on us and desires to do more so. Jesus to Sr. Faustina On one occasion, I heard these words: "My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day, all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. "[Let] the greatest sinners place their trust in My mercy. They have the right before others to trust in the abyss of My mercy. My daughter, write about My mercy towards tormented souls. Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy. Write: before I come as a just Judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice. "From all My wounds, like from streams, mercy flows for souls, but the wound in My Heart is the fountain of un- fathomable mercy. From this fountain spring all graces for souls. The flames of compassion burn Me. I desire greatly to pour them out upon souls. Speak to the whole world about My mercy." Excerpted from Diary of Sr. M. Faustina Kowalska. Please join us today as we celebrate this incredible gift of Jesus’ mercy. From 3:00 to 4:00 pm today (Sunday) we will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the church and will sing the Divine Mercy Chaplet. There will also be time to reflect on God’s mercy and adore the Merciful One in silence.
