If you will have complet- ed your 9th grade through 12th grade year in 2022 you are eligible to participate in this once in a lifetime experience. As part of CWF, youth will travel to historic and civic sites in Chicago, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, New York City and more, be- fore arriving at the National 4-H Center in Washington, D.C. for a week- long, hands-on conference getting to see the Capital city of our country. The official enrollment for this conference will be this summer. However, we are gathering names of those who are interested right now!! There are several optional fund raising activities to help you fund your confer- ence. If you are interested in CWF, 2022, please contact Extension Office, ASAP. March 4-H Activity in a Bag The Phelps-Gosper 4-H Team has created two DIY activities for March . One is designed for Clover Kids, 5-7 years and one for 4-H ages 8-18. The activities are FREE. Clover Kids will receive a DIY 4-Leaf Paper Clover. 4-H Age youth will re- ceive everything needed for Felt 4- Leaf Clover. These may be exhibited at the 2021 County Fair. Please call the office to reserve your kit by March 12 for guaranteed pick-up by March 15. Phelps and Gosper Welcome Spring 4-H Lego Challenge Legos are a building block to be used! Phelps and Gosper Counties are hosting a Welcome Spring Lego challenge. The first day of spring is March 20! • Use your Legos to build a creation representing spring in Nebras- ka • Take a photo and write and brief description of your spring crea- tion. • Share with lori.swanson@unl.edu by March 20 • We will draw one participant name per county and the lucky win- ner gets a small Lego set. Youth must be enrolled in 2021 4-H to be eligible. • Photos will be shared at https://www.facebook.com/PhelpsGosperExtension • Opportunities will be available to exhibit the Lego Creation Photos at the County Fair. 4-H Summer Camp 2021 Registration for 2021 4-H Summer Camps is now open! Check out the selection of 4 and 5 day overnight camps being offered at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey. Register now to pay her a visit.. Con- gratulations Darci. Phelps County 4-H Foundation Camp Scholarships and Grants Are you interested in attending a 4-H workshop, day or overnight camp this summer? Your 4-H Foundation will pay 75% of the registration fee for any in-state 4-H workshop or camp for any enrolled Phelps County 4-H member. This comes as a reimbursement after the camp. Does your 4-H club need financial help getting a program started? Your 4-H Foundation would love to see your proposal to bring new ideas to Phelps County 4-H. Grant funds are available. FEMA Now Accepting Youth Preparedness Council Applications Do you know a young leader who is passionate about making a positive im- pact on their community? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for students in grades 8 through 11 interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities. The youth of today are integral to building prepared communities of the future. Phelps Gosper County 4-H Speech Contest The 2021 4-H Speech Contest Saturday April 17. Elwood 10 AM Register by calling the Extension Office by April 15. Age Divisions: Clover Kids 5-7; Novice-ages 8 and 9 OR Junior – ages 8-10; (A 4-H member may participate in either Novice or Junior, but not both.) Intermediate – ages 11-13; Senior – ages 14 and older. Public Service Announcements Rules and Regulations; All PSA’s are 60 seconds in length. The state theme for the 2021 Public Service Announcement (PSA) is "Opportunity 4 All". All radio PSA’s must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used anywhere in Nebraska at any time of the year. All 4-H PSA’s must include the following tagline within the last ten seconds of the PSA: “Learn more about the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu.” The ta- gline is included in the 60 second time limit. Sound effects and public domain music may be used. Copyrighted materials may not be used. All PSA’s must be the original work of the presenter. Contestants may not use PSA’s written and provided by the state or national staff. PSA’s will be audio, brought to and presented at the contest in an electronic format as a .wav or .mp3 audio format. Speech Length – Clover Kid- under 3 minutes Novice-3 minutes or less Both Clover Kid and Novice may recite a favorite poem, story or something written by someone else. These classes are not eligible for state. Length- Jr. Division – 1-3 minutes Intermediate Division – 3-5 minutes Senior Division – 5-8 minutes All speeches must be original and include 4-H as the major component of the speech. 4-H public speakers may not use the old speech written by a sibling, another 4-H member or anyone else. Acknowledge the source of information used in the speech. Use of visual aids and props is not allowed. Dress appropriately. Do not wear costumes or special effect clothing. 4-H’ers may participate in both the PSA and Speech categories. Only individuals, not teams, may participate in the contest. Page 5:March 2021
Scholarships Available Phelps County 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Phelps County 4-H Foundation provides up to six scholarships for graduating high school seniors and at least one scholarship for a Post secondary student in the process of attaining higher educa- tion. The applications for scholarships will be available through your guidance counselor in an electronic format .Both scholarship applications will be available on our web site at https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/phelps-gosper/phelpsgosper-scholarships/ In ad- dition, both scholarship applications are available in the Extension Office in hard copy. 4-H BB Gun and Archery The BB gun and Archery season is completed in Phelps. What a season it was! The shooting sports program is led by volunteers who have a passion for 4-H and for the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Please take the time to thank a 4-H Shooting Sports leader! We also ask our 4-H Shooting Sports par- ticipants to thank their families for the support throughout the season. 4-H Shooting Sports has been part of the Phelps and Gosper County 4-H programs for many years and we are committed and looking forward to many more! Remember, all shooting sports families are invited to participate in the Fall Cele- bration Banquet, November 2021. Thank you all for making 4-H Shooting Sports successful! Market Beef Weigh In –LAST CHANCE Weigh in for market beef is optional If you missed the two earlier beef weigh days, but still want to enter the county rate of gain contest, you must contact the office by March 15. The 4-H Staff will make plans to include those who still need a weight. One more beef weigh in will be scheduled, register by March 15! Other species do not require a beginning weight. Premises ID –Livestock Exhibitors All 4-H and FFA MARKET animals carrying an EID tag are required to have a Premises ID. A Premises ID number can be obtained through the Nebraska Department of Agriculture -1 -800-572-2437 The Premises ID number will be reported to County Extension Office Staff In order to show at the County and/or the Nebraska State Fair, a Premises ID must be on file for a market animal exhibitor. Each species is from the same quality producer of that species and are approximately the same weight. . All youth must register by April 1 The cost per animal is lower than the normal cost of a quality show animal. One animal per species per 4-H youth. The county fair has a special class just for you. Lottery Hog—Cost: $140, Registration Deadline: April 1 Pick-up animals April 10 in Elwood. Lottery Lamb and Goats— $100 deposit by April 1. The final price will be calculated by the num- ber of animals reserved. Last time the final amount was $175. Contact the Extension Office for registration by April 1. Page 9:March 2021
Youth for the Quality Care of Animals-YQCA Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assur- ance certification through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). YQCA is a national multi -species quality assurance program focused on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-being, and character development. Requirements YQCA certification is required for all 4-H members enrolled in any of the following projects: • Beef (bucket calf, feeder calf, breeding beef, market beef) • Dairy Cattle • Goat (breeding meat goat, dairy goat, meat goat) • Poultry • Rabbit • Sheep (breeding sheep, market sheep) • Swine (breeding swine, market swine YQCA is required annually. Face-to Face Training In-person YQCA training courses cost $3 per individual regard less of age. Dates to be determined. Be watching your 4-H Newsletter! Web-based Training at https://yqca.learngrow.io/Account/Login. The online YQCA course costs $12 per individual regardless of age. Test-out options are only available to youth in the first year of Intermediate (age 12) and Senior (age 15) age levels. There is no test-out option for Juniors. Participants will have only one chance to take the test-out option. If youth fail, they will not be provided another opportunity to test out of that age level. Test-out costs are: Intermediate: $36 ($12 x 3 years of certification) Senior: $48 ($12 x 4 years of certification). Youth do not need to be enrolled 4-H members to enroll. Three levels of online courses are available. The course will prepare youth for completing the Nebraska 4-H Advancement Levels When you are ready to test for 4-H Horse Advancement, please make arrangements with the Extension Office. 4-H Animal Marketing Livestock families need to plan early to raise and train livestock for the county fair. Youth learn how best to take an animal from farm to market. As you plan, please be aware NO hog buyer will be available for the Phelps County fair in 2021. The Phelps County Ag Society and 4-H staff suggest you look at meat processing lockers now for your 4-H hogs next summer. The Phelps County Ag Society has reserved some space for 4-H Hogs and limited number of beef at area lockers. Call the Extension Office at 995-4222 to reserve a spot for 4-H hogs at Kensing- ton Locker or Oxford Locker. Kensington Locker • 40 Hogs only; no beef • Ag Society and Extension Office will take the reservation. • The hogs will be hauled from the fair grounds the day of the 4-H auction, July 29. Oxford Locker • 10-12 Hogs; no beef • Ag Society and Extension Office will take the reservation. • August 3 is the date the animal will need to be delivered to the locker. Families must make the travel arrangements.
