_______________________Page 3 Editorial Our Road Map seems to be running reasonably smoothly, but there are some concerning matters that could put a spoke in the works. The level of new infections with new variants worries us considerably, just hope we get to the end of June still on course to open up safely again……. Not go- ing abroad for another year, if then. More details of the Solar farm have arrived through letterboxes recently and while the areas are large, the distribution is spread over a large areas, and seems not concentrated in one, thanks goodness! The loss of good farm land is a very serious concern, particularly post Brexit, as we do need land to grow crops on and farm, perhaps more than ever before. Hopefully a reasonable result will arise between our Eco needs and all the demands on our land. Looking forward to our next ROBOTs meeting, once we are re opened and to seeing people again in reasonably close proximity, safely. I have an apology to make to Pam Weston. In our last but one issue we inadvertently inserted the pages she provided in the wrong order, thus making somewhat limited sense, so apologies Pam. From a dry March and April we have a wet May, and it has not yet warmed up. Really hope it does soon. What lies ahead in Blazing June? Keep right onto the end of the Road Map, stay safe. Editor - Simon Spencer Next Deadline is 10th June Aug & Sept issue is 10th July 2021
_______________________Page 4 St James the Great St James the Great Services 6th June Morning Worship 10.30am 20th June Holy Communion 10.30 am 27th June Morning Prayer (BCP) 9.30am Please let the churchwarden know if you intend to attend a particular service so that he is able to plan the seating. While it is such good news that we are again able to join in worship here it is still very understandable that some members of the congregation feel it is too risky, the extra good news is that Rev. Marc is continuing his services on Youtube - From the Curate’s Study, plus Wondering Wednesday, and for children, Kid’s Club. Notes from the PCC The church grounds have seen many more visitors during the different phases of lockdown - a surprising number from elsewhere, but most from the village, including dog walkers and people just out for a breath of fresh air. Most years we are supported by villagers willing to turn out to help do some springtime tidying up, and this time we had a massive turn out on two successive Saturday mornings and the results are there for everyone to see.
______________________Page 5 Photo of one of those working parties Some worked hard on the border on the west side of the car park, and it is now filled with loads of beautiful plants which will greatly enhance that area. Our grateful thanks to everyone who came along - too many to name! Church services have restarted, but maybe unsurprisingly are not yet well attended. Nevertheless, work to maintain and improve the church building and its grounds continue unabated. Some of the windows have deteriorated and will require a lot of work and fund- ing to bring up to a decent condition again. We are getting close to finalising negotiations within the church and with Devon Highways about the final repairs to the boundary by Harris Farm - it’s been very frustrating to see how quickly a collapsed wall locally was to be repaired, when not dealing with a Grade 1 listed building! If you have any questions about the church itself or it’s activities, do please contact the vicar or the Church Warden - details are on the village website.

______________________Page 8 FUNDRAISING FOR LOCAL CANCER PATIENTS. With the support of the community in & around Talaton & Ottery St Mary I have been putting together care bags for cancer patients since June 2019. I deliver the bags to the Cherrybrook ward at the RDE hospital where they are handed out along with an information pack just before Chemo begins. I''ve been fortunate to have met some of the recipients of the bags & the general feedback from the nurses is that they bring such happiness. To me they show that people are thinking of them & sending their love & best wishes. The bags contain treats & useful items that hopefully make treat- ment just that bit easier. These 2021-2022 include a puzzle book, paper- ADVERT CHARGES back book, notebook & pen, Do you want to advertise in the ginger biscuits, sweets, hand Calendar? cream, lipbalm, soft socks & drinks bottle. ______________________Page 13 Public 15-minute open forum: Christopher Sowerbutts from Lightrock introduced him- self and said he was there to address any issues from residents re the proposed solar farm at Paytherden. He said that residents felt under consulted and he had wanted to make himself available to answer any queries. A public meeting is due to be held at Clyst Hy- don once Covid restrictions are lifted. He stated that the technical team were looking into the issue of traffic through Talaton which he stated would be a burden to the community of Talaton. Correspondence Received: 1. Paytherden Solar Farm objections- all the emails received had been circulated to the PC, No action to be taken at present until the consultation takes place and the planning application is received. 2. Orchard Close Footpath- Simon Jupp MP had contacted the council to say that residents had contacted him to say the footpath and chain link fence were unsafe and he wanted the PC to look into the matter. Residents had not been aware that the PC had already reported the matter of the cracked footpath and the response from DCC to say it would be repaired. The Clerk said that this was due to her missing the item from the minutes as she had given a verbal report after speaking to DCC. The damage to the wall at the end of the footpath has also been reported and is due to be repaired. The chain link fence is not deemed to be a safety issue by Devon County. The PC will review the matter of the chain link fence next year after the footpath has been repaired. 3. Invitation to meeting with Lightrock re Paytherden – the Chairman of Clyst Hy- don PC had been in contact to invite the PC and residents to a public meeting when it can be held after restrictions are lifted. b. Items of late correspondence: 1. Email from Chris Harwood-After much deliberation he has decided to stand down from managing the PC website. Cllr Lenehan expressed her gratitude for the ster- ling work Chris has given over many years in operating the website on our behalf. As it is a legal requirement for the PC to host a website, a sub-committee of the Chairman, Cllr Gray and the Clerk will meet and re- evaluate the management of the website. Parish maintenance: the following items to be reported to Highways • Pothole between Beacon Cross and Talaton Farm Barns on left- and right-hand side • Pothole- near bus stop at Woodmans Orchard towards Bittery Cross • Post and rail by the dog bin at the top of the road to Harris Farm still not repaired • Corner between Rydon and Blue Anchor has not been repaired to a good standard The drain at Hillside has been added to list for jetting. Date of next meeting: As agreed previously, unless any planning matters arise, the next meeting will be Wednesday 7th July at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall unless there are chang- es to the Covid restrictions. Cllr Lenehan has given her apologies as she will not be able to attend.

______________________Page 16 Rainfall at the Cobblers & Parish Hall 100 Club Rainfall at the Cobblers in Talaton during April 2021. The month began settled but soon turned very cold, the Met office said that it was a unusually dry month, if fact the 4th driest April since 1862! Here in Talaton I recoded only 22.5mls or 0.9 inches of rain. In fact there were 26 days without a drop, the driest April that I have recorded over the Last 10 years when in 2015 there was only 0.78 inches. There were only 4x 24-hour periods without a frost. The provisional UK mean temperature was 5.7C which was 1.7C below the long-term average. The Met Office says that the number of days with- out an air frost across the UK was the highest since 1960. The highest temperature was at Trknow in Cornwell on 1st with 21.4C and the lowest of -9.4C at Tulloch Bridge in Inverness shire. On the 28th 28mls or 1.12 inches of rain fell at St. Athan in South Wales. I recorded 22.50 mls or 0.9 inches of rain bringing our yearly total to 8.81 Inches. ______________________Page 19 Jobs for June ………. weed, water, mulch and keep a look out for all the pests, removing them as soon as they appear! Feed tomato plants when the first fruit sets and pinch out their side shoots. If you leave these shoots then energy will be diverted into them rather than your crop of fruits. Of course there are always exceptions to rules - don’t pinch any side shoots off your free Otter Tumbler tom. Tumblers work better for you, as little bush shaped plants. Mid summer’s day should be the time to stop cutting asparagus, give it some well deserved food and let the shoots grow and flourish until they go brown in the autumn. This will give them a chance to make food for themselves and hopefully give you a good crop in 2022. If you haven’t already done it, build supports for climbing beans and judging by the strong winds we have experienced already this year, do make sure that your supports are really robust and well anchored in. Plant out French and runner beans, leeks, courgettes, marrows, cau- liflowers, cabbage, sweet corn… and continue to sow quick harvest crops such as radish. Plant out aubergines by the end of the month to give them enough time to grow and develop good sized fruit. Thin out apples and pears toward the end of the month, and thin out plums at the beginning and the end of the month. Heavily laden branches can break under weight of the developing fruit. Find more advice read Jim Buttress’s Tips for June on our web page. Don’t forget to tend some of your crops and flowers so that they are ready for our Annual Show on Saturday 7th August! More about the show in next month’s Calendar. We still hope to be able to put this on and if we are not, well just eat all the delicious fruits of your la- bours! Happy gardening Find out more about The Talaton Produce Association type the link below: http://www.talatonparishcouncil.co.uk/Core/Talaton-TC/Pages/Produce_1.aspx
