Unrelenting demands on His time, pulled in every direction: ‘heal us’, ‘teach us’, ‘feed us’! “The report about Him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to Him and be cured of their ailments, but He would withdraw to deserted places to pray.” (New American Bible, Luke 5:16) Here is your opportunity to withdraw, and you can do it right here at Sacred Heart. Consider joining us for the Bridges Retreat The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius! What is it? A personal journey of prayer and reflection guided by the Holy Spirit and your trained Prayer Companion from September through May. Each week the Retreatant (you!) will: 1) read assigned scripture passages, pray and reflect on them using a journal; 2) meet at Sacred Heart with your Prayer Companion (45 minutes) to discuss your insights or questions; etc; and 3) meet with a small group of retreatants for a brief talk and period of sharing (45 minutes.) If you would like to learn more, we offer three ways to do so: 1) Visit Bridges website: www.bridgesfoundation.org 2) email Deacon Gary Peterson: deacongary@sacredheart-vp.com and 3) attend an information meeting at Sacred Heart on Tuesday, July 20, 7 to 9 p.m. 4 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Simply visit: https:// sacredheartvp.org/parish -events July 25-31 is NFP Awareness Week! What really is NFP? Natural Family Planning is a fertility awareness-based method. It has great benefits that many people do not realize. It can help with family planning, but also helps all women of childbearing age under- stand their cycles and how it can help with their overall health. My name is Sarah Reiter and want to put out there that I would love to talk to anyone about this topic. * You could be a married couple trying to conceive or space children. * You could be parents who want to empower their young daughters to know the dignity of their bodies in a confusing world. * You could be someone who wants to better understand church teaching on contraception. * You could want to know how NFP can help the environment. * You could just want to unpack a random question that has never been answered for you. I usually teach introductory classes the first Wednesday of the month here at Sacred Heart for anyone who wants to know the types of NFP out there and the method I teach — Marquette. There are also online classes that are available. Feel free to email or call with questions. We can also meet to talk. Intro class not necessary. Information will be available in the back of church as well. Thanks! Hope to hear from you! I can be reached at Nfp-sarahr@hotmail.com or 314-607-0502. JULY 18, 2021 | 5
Steubenville is such an amazing experience. Getting to spend a weekend with these amazing people has led to a lot of fun memories and great friendships that will last. I had so much fun dancing, singing, doing cheers with everyone and then we were able to come together to dive deep into our faith. It’s an unforgettable experience each time you go! ~ Mia Hinkamper, senior “This weekend was one of the best weekends of my life, for sure! I really enjoyed when everyone came together for pre-Mass worship because we all were so excited and happy and were all together like a family. It was such a fun time! ~ Maggie King, who attended Stuebenville for the first time this year 6 | 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Saint Mary Magdalene Feast Day — July 22 Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50. Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication at the worst, of extreme demonic possession or possibly, severe illness. Writing in the New Catholic Commentary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.” In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Edward Mally, S.J., agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.” Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the “Apostle to the Apostles.” Reflection Calling young adults ages 18-25 (or older!) for a Young Adult Retreat Mary Magdalene has been a victim of here at SHVP on July 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. which will conclude mistaken identity for almost 20 centuries. Yet with our 5:30 p.m. Mass. The retreat will be held in the Naz. she would no doubt insist that it makes no Our theme is Anchored in Hope: Staying Spiritually Grounded in Times difference.
