A MESSAGE FROM... This Sunday is Father’s Day, and if that’s not enough to make fathers happy, it’s also the official beginning of “astronomical” summer on the calendar (thank you, Tom Skilling)! Let's give thanks to God for our fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and how can we not think of our beloved St. James priests, Father Ryan and Father Bill! But I’d like to ask all of you to turn your thoughts on Father’s Day to one particular father whose life was actually dedicated to all of us who call ourselves Christians – Saint Joseph, the Husband of Mary and Foster-Father of the Son of God. Saint Joseph holds a very unique and special place in salvation history; he is our Spiritual Father! From December 8, 2020 until December 8, 2021, Pope Francis has proclaimed this to be a “Year of Saint Joseph” to recall the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. One only need read and pray the Litany of St. Joseph to understand why he is designated as the Universal Church’s patron saint; in the Litany, he is referred to as “Chaste Guardian of the Virgin”, “Zealous Defender of Christ”, “Glory of Domestic Life,” and “Light of Patriarchs”, to name a few. Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient fa- ther, and accepting father, a father who is creatively courageous, a working father, and a father in the shadows who is centered on Mary and Jesus. Wow! What a great model of fatherhood Saint Joseph is for us! So, Happy Father’s Day, and here is a prayer to St. Joseph which Pope Francis encourages us to pray together: Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; In you Mary placed her trust; With you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, Show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, And defend us from every evil. -Deacon Johnny Burnett

M I N I ST RY SP O T L IG H T Racism and Employment Fourth in a series of nine USCCB backgrounders on racism and systemic racism, wealth, education, employment, housing, migration, criminal justice, the Native American experience, and voting. Combatting Racism - Parish Resources | USCCB After the end of slavery until the First World War, 90% of African Americans lived in the South, the great majority toiling as sharecroppers. In addition, the imposition of Jim Crow, which guaranteed segregation and disenfranchisement, was ample impetus to leave the South for good. With the start of WWI in 1916, the Great Migration brought black laborers north to work in factories. However, they faced many challenges. Many white residents in northern cities resented the new black residents, and tensions could spill over into violence and riots. Despite higher available salaries than those in the South, black migrants to the North were typically relegated to lower paying jobs. The Great Depression further eroded job possibilities. Even with post-Depression economic recovery, many labor unions that secured just wages were closed to African Americans, as were many professions. Even college-educated African Americans often found limited entry-level employment. In 2017 the Harvard University Business School Review documented that hiring discrimination against African Americans was still a reality—and did not decline in the past 25 years • “Subtle forms of racial stereotypes” in the workplace and “unconscious bias” have shown little change: support for more affirmative action policies and stronger enforcement of antidiscrimination legislation is critical because this pattern “will not diminish on its own.” • The unemployment rate among African American workers and Hispanic workers is still higher than for whites, and in 14 states and the District of Columbia, black unemployment is at least twice as high as white unemployment • Native American communities often have vastly higher unemployment than the national average.
