From the Pastor... Are We Really Alone... John 16:32 - 32The hour is coming, indeed it has days. (Can you imagine if this was happening in the come, when you will be scattered, each one to his days before the internet!? It blows my mind to think home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone of it.) Our topic was: What does it mean to face an because the Father is with me. enemy that you cannot see? Worship and Music How We’re Worshipping Ways to Remotely Worship on Sundays Each Sunday we will be gathering online at 11:00am. There are three ways to do this. By Facebook Live. Simply go to www.facebook.com/ourredeemers. You don’t have to have a Facebook account – it’s a public channel. By Phone. call 1 669 900 9128 , and then enter this number when prompted: 822 691 346. This method only lets you listen, but it works well, and is less technologically fraught. By Zoom. • Download the Zoom app to your computer, tablet, or cell phone. It’s free! • Click this link: https://zoom.us/j/822691346. The link works from 10:45am – 12:15pm every Sunday. • Make sure your video is on, and your audio is muted. The controls are in the lower left corner of your screen. Your audio should be muted throughout the service. • Use “Speaker View” from the upper corner of your computer screen. • You can chat using the chat function throughout the service. This can be to add prayer requests, ask questions, and high five your friends. Katlin, our Welcome Minister, will be monitoring the chat and make sure that our worship leaders know what questions you have. The bulletin for Sunday will be available on our website for download at www.ourredeemers.net/virtual- worship/. You can print it at home, or save a tree and look at it on a screen. If you have questions about live-streaming, please email Pastor Gretchen or Katlin and we will do our best to help. 4 The Visitor April 2020
HOLY WEEK 2020 AT OUR REDEEMER’S (PLAN C) Yep. Our staff started planning Holy Week last summer, and finished by the end of January. THEN, the pandemic! Enter Plan B. We made a whole new plan for creating “Holy Week Kits” for each household, with palms, bread and wine, votives and bells for each service during the holiest of weeks. THEN, the “stay at home” order, keeping worship leaders from being in the church. So now, PLAN C! Different from anything we’ve done before – but meaningful, even so. Holy Week 2020 – The Journey to New Life Re-living the Passion of Jesus…which is our story! This year’s Holy Week will center simply and fully on the scriptural story of Jesus’ last days, crucifixion and resurrection. All our worship will be streamed, with simple in-home, hands-on ways to participate (except our 24-Hour Prayer Vigil, which will take place at home). There are some simple things that we can use as part of our worship services together to make things more interactive and meaningful. The tools you might consider finding around your house are as follows: April 5 @11am - Palm Sunday – Enter Jerusalem with Jesus! You will need a branch or leaf. If you have a palm branch – GREAT! But if not, any branch will do. We will also be celebrating Holy Communion, so have your bread and festive beverage ready to participate. April 9 - Maundy Thursday – Share Jesus’ Last Supper and a New Commandment. At 6pm we will share a special meal together, each from our own homes. At 7pm, we will share communion together. You will need: a small loaf of bread, and some port wine, or the beverage of your choice. April 10 - Good Friday – two ways to participate. 1) Pray with Jesus. Our Good Friday Prayer Vigil will continue this year, with those who volunteer to pray praying from home. The vigil runs from 12pm April 10 to 12pm April 11, with individuals signing up for each hour. Prayer requests to be prayed during the vigil should be sent to Kari Guddal at kari_guddal@outlook.com. 2) Listen to Jesus on the Cross. During the day, you are invited to listen to the Faure Requiem, available at this LINK. At 7pm, we will join others from our synod at a Service of Tenebrae (shadows) which include Jesus’ seven last words from the cross. The link for the service is www.LutheransNW.org/HolyWeek. To enhance your participation, try and find seven candles, and a room that will be dark when the candles are out. They are extinguished one at a time, throughout the service. April 12 – Easter Sunday @11am – Rise with Jesus! We will be worshipping virtually with our whole synod, with our Bishop, Shelley Bryan Wee, preaching. The link for the service will be found at www.LutheransNW.org/HolyWeek. We will have Holy Communion together. Some tools to make the day more festive: find a bell that rings! You can ring it every time we say Alleluia! And make a sign or banner that says “ALLELUIA!” with as many colors as you can find, to display in your windows, or parade around your house and yard. Each of these simple things will enhance our worship experience together. Of course, if they’re not handy, it’s no big deal – come as you are! Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church 5

Living Generously How We’re Giving Dear Friends, In the last few weeks, I’ve had fresh appreciation for our community. Despite the changes and challenges right now, the ministries and community of Our Redeemer’s continue. We are caring for our Road to Housing guests, the Ballard Food Bank, and the people whose lives are most compromised by the virus. We are reaching out to one another. Phone calls. Texts. Emails. Offers to help. Prayers. Setting up new groups and new technology. Words of ready thanks and appreciation. Our strong staff are working harder than ever. But there’s no question the pandemic hits many of us financially—and our ability to give. If that is you, please know, your giving to God is between you and God, and there is no shame or judgment about any choices you make. We pray for all of us who face such challenges. On the other hand, our congregation’s financial generosity keeps us strong and stable into the future. If your circumstances haven’t changed, please keep giving at the same level or perhaps pray about whether you can give a bit more to offset those who cannot right now. (See the next page for ways to make giving easier during this time.) With kindness, compassion, strength, and desire to welcome all, without exception, Our Redeemer’s continues to be Christ’s hands and heart and voice. And right now, we seek to be Christ’s light in this difficult time. God is with us. Always. And God will provide, as God always has, from generation to generation. And when we look back on this time, we will know more deeply than ever before how faithful God is and how fortunate we are to be part of this beloved community. THANK YOU, VERY MUCH - for Living Generously and Giving Faithfully+ Pastor Kathy 8 The Visitor April 2020

Faith Formation How We’re Connecting New! Circles of Connection Our pastors are working to form up intentional groups of folks to stay connected to each other. Groups will meet by zoom at set weekly dates and times (as they schedule individually). Each group will have the following purpose: • Check in – remind each other of your names, and then answer one question to help you know each other well. • Dig deep – Join in conversation around a short list of questions based on the pastor’s sermon from the previous Sunday. • Pray – Pray extemporaneously or using a set prayer from a list of choices. Include specific prayer requests from within your group. • If you would like to be part of a group, or lead a group, please email Pastor Kathy or Pastor Gretchen, and we will be in touch very soon! Groups/Classes/Meetings on Zoom Katlin Dickenson-Laurence, our office guru and welcome minister extraordinaire, has been working to create Zoom meetings for each group that regularly meets at church for whom meeting virtually makes sense. That schedule is the same schedule as the times you had been meeting in person. The groups we are scheduling are as follows: Theology on Tap, Road2Housing, Caring Community Team, Choir, Madonna’s Book Group, Men’s Breakfast, Life Masters, Staff Meeting, Faith Formation Team, Church Council, Executive Committee, Social Justice Team, Traditional Worship Team, Generosity Team, Vision Aligned Building Team, and our new Circles of Connection. If your group isn’t listed here, and you would like a zoom meeting scheduled, please contact Katlin at office@ourredeemers.net. Council Calls Our council not only works hard to ensure Our Redeemer’s mission is strong, they care! And they’ve decided that this time when we are separated in so many ways is an excellent opportunity to reach out individually, and see how each of Our Redeemer’s’ households are doing. Expect a call or voice mail in the next few weeks, simply checking in, but also listening ears for any church matters you’d like to mention, or personal concerns you’d like support with. Our council members are: Dinah Coble, Amy Dahlgren, Morgan Fowler, Matt Grover, Mike Hlastala, Shelbe Kukowski, Emilie Purvine, and Terrence Rindler. 10 The Visitor April 2020
Community What Happened in March? AUCTION! Go raibh maith agat! Or, THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our auction a huge success! We had over thirty-five donors, forty volunteers, and two hundred people attend our annual festival and auction. • Big thanks to the Tara Acadamy of Dance for donating their time and talent for our amusement, and to the Fork and Fin food truck for making a donation as well! • For our annual Fund-A-Need, we raised the paddle to get a new commercial-grade dishwasher for our church kitchen, and were grateful to surpass our goal of $9,000. Amazing! • For our general fund, we raised over $17,000. This is GREAT! I love that our auction is an event where we build community, donate from our gifts and talents, and have the win-win-win of supporting this congregation financially, getting something cool out of it, and hopefully building relationships along the way. Let’s do it again next year! Just a note that if you purchased something at the auction, invoices were mailed the last week of March, and we would love to be able to close the books on the auction quickly. Community How We’re Caring for Each Other Friendship Calls Our Caring Community Team is creating a list of some of the more vulnerable members of our community (folks over 60 and those who are immune compromised), and coordinating Friendship Calls to check in and remain connected to folks who are truly isolated during this time. If you would like to participate in our Friendship Calls, please contact Linda Carbone at lindac19@comcast.net. Intergenerational Pen Pals Pastor Gretchen and Mandy Neill have started working together to pair some of our younger folks with people who might like to receive some creative mail and maybe form a pen-pal relationship. If your young person would like to give it a try, or if you’re someone who would love to receive some mail from a kid, please contact Mandy or Pastor Gretchen and we’ll get you some details. neillmandy@gmail.com or pastor.gretchen@ourrdeedemers. net. How We’re Helping Giving to the Food Bank by Tom Bernard The Ballard Food Bank is continuing to serve our hungry neighbors during this crisis, though in a slightly different format. Instead of allowing clients to shop our grocery model, as we’ve been doing for many years, we have prepacked bags of food that we offer to clients and then amazing volunteers that augment those bags with meat, cheese, produce, sandwiches etc.. . This allows us to service the specific dietary needs of clients while reducing the amount of social interaction. If you’re wanting to help out, the Food Bank could really use more volunteers. Monetary donations, as well, are very much appreciated as those enable us to be nimble and buy what we specifically need. There is also an Amazon wish list on the website if you’d like to check that out as well. Go to ballardfoodbank.org to find out more. Helping with Worship by Pastor Gretchen We would love to have your talents and abilities through our online services! If you would like to read scripture, pray the prayers, or sing a song of special music, you can totally do that! And it would be a gift to our community. Simply contact Pastor Gretchen (pastor.gretchen@ourredeemers.net) or Karen Lee (karen@ ourredeemers.net) with your ideas or desires to help, and we’ll plug you in, gratefully! Kids and youth are encouraged to participate, as well as folks of all ages. You don’t have to be a professional, or even polished. God loves gifts that are offered with heart. Thank you for thinking of ways to participate! 14 The Visitor April 2020

Social Justice How We Do Social Justice at Home If you want to get an earful, just ask a team of social justice advocates to stay home for a few weeks. It can feel like being asked to disengage from the work we feel matters most. This is our calling as faithful social justice advocates. And sometimes, we are NOT to be messed with. Although staying home does not feel particularly satisfying, there are many things we can do from the comfort of our couch. Consider using this time as an opportunity to expand your wheelhouse of options. Perhaps one of these: • Speak up about racism associated with the virus. People are concerned for their safety. • Report price gouging https://www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint. • Support local businesses that are still open or who are doing online shopping and delivery. • Sign this petition to address the COVID-19 crisis for people experiencing homelessness: https://p2a. co/9k9aJho • Donate food or money to the Ballard Food Bank. If you feel comfortable, volunteer. https://www. ballardfoodbank.org/ • Call your senators to demand a moral stimulus that speaks to the needs of all people. People before profit! 855-999-1663 • Read/educate yourself. Here are a few excellent choices which I would be happy to loan if you cannot find them at a local bookstore. 1. The autobiography of Dorothy Day: The Long Loneliness. A fascinating look at the Catholic Worker Movement and the life of Dorothy Day. 2. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Strength to Love. This collection of MLK’s letters and speeches is life changing. 3. Michelle Alexander: The New Jim Crow. Find out what all the conversation is about regarding mass incarceration. This is an intense read, but well worth it. 4. Soong-Chan Rah: Prophetic Lament. Rah is an important voice for the church today and as powerful in person as his books. It is a study of Lamentations. 5. Desmond Tutu: No Future Without Forgiveness. This book is his account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. 6. Miguel A. De La Torre: Doing Christian Ethics from the Margin. This academic book will give you new language to talk about faith and justice. Let Shannon know if you are interested in participating in a Social Justice book study and which are most compelling to you, outreach@ourredeemers.net. 16 The Visitor April 2020
Social Justice Road to Housing Update Road to Housing currently has five vehicles in our program. Resources Resources To Help Survive These Times St. Paul lived in dangerous times. He wrote his beloved church in Philippi: The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:5-9 So true! Do you set aside time for prayer? Here are some resources for you to explore and use during our trying times. Blessings on your time with God. • Pray As You Go: An app with a daily 10-14 minute music/scripture/prayer prompt, but also prayer tools for breathing, special prayer focuses on anxiety, loneliness, insomnia, etc. The readers have lovely, (usually) non-stuffy voices. • Christ in Our Home Devotions: With this current health crisis, some people may be without a physical copy of Christ in Our Home. To assist with devotional life during this time, a limited-time complementary email subscription is being offered. Sign up and receive the daily devotional to your email for the remainder of March and April 2020. Sign up here. • Unfolding Light Unfolding Light is a daily reflection (weekdays) by Steve Garnaas-Holmes rooted in a contemplative, Creation-centered, justice-oriented spirituality. unfoldinglight.net. • Celtic Christianity and Music Facebook Group: They describe themselves as “a Sanctuary with a Celtic soul. We hope to encourage you with posts that reflect God in our world. Through music. Through prayers both new and ancient. Through poetry and prose. ….a community of care…celebrating and living out the unconditional love Christ has for all creation.” • Centering Prayer App: Create your own quiet time, with an opening prayer, beginning sound (lute, gong, bells, etc.) how long you would like to enter silence, and then an ending sound to let you know when the time is complete. • Our Redeemer’s Spiritual Life-hack Group: Not specifically for prayer, but frequently inspirational. And perhaps we can share what prayer practices and prayers are especially helpful to us right now. How about you? What prayer resources do you use that you would like to share? Please forward them to Pastor Hawks, and we will figure out a way to share them more broadly. 18 The Visitor April 2020
