The Tower March 2020 563 Bethel Green Road * Staunton, Virginia 24401 * (540) 886 -6041 bethelpc@gmail.com * www.bethelpresbyterianstaunton.org As This Elder Sees It . . . Greetings! Can you believe it is March already and we are observ- ing Lent? Bethel hosted the Community Ash Wednesday Service 2/26 and we will continue to participate in the Community Lenten Services on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm. I say we, meaning that, I hope and pray, we, Bethel, will join as a community of brothers and sisters in Christ worshiping together with our neighboring churches not just at Bethel, but at all the churches. Communion will be held at all services and a free will offering will be accepted to benefit Riverheads WRE. Growing up in a community with Catholic classmates I often heard, “What are you giving up for Lent?” Not being Catholic I did not give up anything. Have you ever tried to give up something for 40 days? Red Meat? French Fries? Chocolate? During Lent we prepare ourselves for Easter, similar to waiting for Christmas during Advent. Seems like we are always waiting and preparing. As we wait for our next minister, I suggest we add an activity to our lives rather than giving something up. Can you, will you, join us as we jour- ney through Lent as a Community? Here is the rest of the schedule: • Thursday 3/5 the service will be at Greenville UMC with Rev. Ryan Oswald from Mint Spring UMC as guest speaker. • Thursday 3/12 at Mt. Tabor Lutheran – Pastor Jim Bollinger from Greenville UMC • Thursday 3/19 at Redeemer Lutheran – Rev. Lance Braun – Redeemer and Mt. Tabor • Thursday 3/26 at Bethel – Rev. Ryan Oswald • Thursday 4/2 at Mint Spring UMC – Pastor Dennis Russell – Church of the Forerunner • Thursday 4/9 at Mt. Tabor – Maundy Thursday – Rev. Lance Braun • Easter Sunrise 4/12 at Bethel at the Chapel in the Woods, time will be announced, followed by covered dish breakfast in the Fellowship Hall and traditional Worship Service at 11 am with guest minister Rev. Bernard Bangley. See you in church, Jill Webb, Elder Elect Bethel Presbyterian Church The Tower - March 2020 page 1
