From the Pastor’s Desk September 2021 GREETINGS IN THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS, OUR SAVIOR AND REDEEMER! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2021 This year’s Vacation Bible School theme of “Rocky Railway: Jesus Pulls Us Through” was held for (3) evenings this year (August 3-5th) and was filled with excitement and “locomotion commotion” to say the least! We, once again, invited St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mahoning, to join us, and under our Co-Directors Julia Kelm from Trinity and Kim Gerhard from St. John’s, all the children had a great time traveling on the imaginary train stopping at each of the following stations along the way: the Station for Music and Dance with Susan Lovejoy, the Bible Station with sand art depictions of each Bible story with Pastor Moore & Beverly Mills, the Crafts Station with Ashley Christman, Ava Beers, Timara Klotz and Kay Paterson, the Games Station with Mark & Diane Hoffman, the Snack Station with Corine Shaffer, Edith Kunkle, Sandy Muffley, Sarah Dalton, Bonnie Vito and Talin Fairchild as the Conductor of the “Swedish Fish Delivery Train.” Thank you to all the Crew Leaders Rhonda Rupell, Tara Derr, Chris Marshall, Sue Solt, Rowan Schaeffer, and Makenna Snyder who guided the children throughout the rotational model. To the many who assisted Julia Kelm behind the scenes with last minute schedule changes, all the decorations, especially the Edmunds Family from our Food Pantry who made our life-size train from cardboard and paint, to the folks at the Registration Table who greeted the families each night Kay Becker, Louise Sellers, Linda Williams and Denise Niehoff, and, of course, Pete Balogach, our church sexton, who cleaned up after us! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! September will, indeed, be a busy month as well at Trinity for a number of reasons. 3
WELCOME VICAR SARAH MOORE First, we officially welcomed Vicar Sarah Moore. Vicar Sarah Moore hails from the United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg campus and will be with us for one year. Vicar Sarah is our 4th Intern here at Trinity since we entered in partnership with the ELCA Seminaries in 2016. We held a Service of Installation on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at our 9:30am Worship Service, and we look forward to her past experience with Camp Ministry & Acoustic Guitar, Choir, Communications, Vice-President of the Seminary Student Body, and her most recent completion of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) or Chaplaincy training. Vicar Sarah will be our Level One Confirmation Instructor, weekly Youth Group Leader including planning & traveling with our Youth to the 2022 ELCA National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, MN next summer. She will also be the Assisting Minister on Sundays (& 1st Saturdays beginning in October) and preaching monthly during her first semester with us. I look forward to a productive internship as her supervisor. To avoid any miscommunications or misunderstandings, please do not hesitate to ask me or Julia Kelm, Internship Committee Chairperson should any questions or concerns arise while Vicar Sarah is with us. SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL Second, we have re-organized our Sunday School Staff and Children’s Special Events Programming. One of the major changes is with the job tasks involving the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. Ms. Julia Kelm, our Superintendent, will now be focusing on Public Relations and Marketing which means relationship building with our children and families as well as building our weekly attendance through outreach and evangelism to those children who might not have a Sunday School to attend. Julia will continue to monitor and order the Whirl Curriculum, stocking the classroom cabinets, and pack & track the weekly snacks for the children, which were a hit during the Drive-Thru model we utilized last year. Along the lines of Administration, Christine Marshall has accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent. With her experience at Air Products, Chris will be using her computer skills to streamline the often more tedious tasks of administration. Chris’ focus will be on 4
Registration, Attendance & Offering Tracking, Staffing & Changes, and Inventory & Purchasing of Supplies. She will work closely with Julia, Beverly Mills, our office secretary, and myself. Chris has also agreed to be the Children’s Special Events Co-Ordinator for our Annual Christmas Pageant and Vacation Bible School. We welcome the business experience and gifts Chris brings to us in these capacities. As we say good-bye and a huge “thank you” to Mark and Diane Hoffman, who taught the 1st & 2nd Grade Class for several years, we welcome onboard Ms. Ashley Christman, Youth Rep. to Council and a previous helper in VBS and Sunday School as she learns the objectives of teaching with the help of Chris Marshall. Ms. Sue Solt will be her classroom assistant. We are also in need of a Co-Teacher with Beverly Mills in the 5th & 6th Grade Class to teach on a weekly basis with Bev while Melissa Kester is currently on a Leave of Absence. If you are a retired teacher or past SS teacher feeling called to work with the children at this grade level, please pray about it, discern about it, and, subsequently, contact Christine Marshall through the church office. The current guidelines require us to have at least one adult and/or one other teacher or helper in each classroom and background checks on file. September will most certainly be a busy month, but we always to look to our triune God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to guide us each step of the way! Sincerely in Christ who strengthens us, Reverend Nancy L. Moore, Pastor 5

Moore also received approval to include one St. John’s 2nd yr. confirmation student because of their pastoral vacancy. She also reported that Ashley Christman and Susan Solt volunteered to teach the 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School class. • Property Committee reported that the deterioration of the steeple base was greater than anticipated before the removal causing an increase in the repair cost of $7,800. Approval was granted for the additional. Also, they have two estimates for the replacement of gutters and downspouts under consideration. They are also looking into discussions with several companies for consideration of HVAC services. Shawn Keiser reported that the smoke detectors will be replaced and that his employer will supply new ones at their cost. • Noted that Trinity won the blue ribbon at the Carbon County Fair for the display, thanks to the effort of Mary Ann Hazel. WORLD HUNGER DONATIONS … Total donations received for the month of July was $ 252.00 for a year to day total of $ 2,502 toward our 2021 goal of $4,000. Thank you to everyone for your continued support to help feed our brothers and sisters in need!! If you are able, please help us reach our yearly goal by making a monthly donation. Any amount is appreciated. An envelope is included in your offering packets. Any amount is appreciated! LABORING FOR THE LORD For many people, the pandemic redefined work, with more employees logging hours from a home office — or kitchen table. Boundaries between job and personal life blurred, as did any sense of being “off duty.” Most of us prefer clear divisions between our tasks and time. While such separations may help with scheduling, they are artificial human constructs. “Whatever your task,” says Colossians 3:23 (NRSV, emphasis added) — whether in public or private, family or job, spiritual or worldly activities — “put yourselves into it as done for the Lord.” Verse 17 tells us to “do everything” in Jesus’ name, “giving thanks to God the Father through him.” That means even work and worship interlock. As Rick Warren writes, “Work becomes worship when you dedicate it to God and perform it with an awareness of his presence.” 8

STEEPLE UPDATE On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, I received an email from the engineer in charge of refurbishing our steeple informing me there would be an additional charge in the amount of $7,800 to fully re- condition the steeple. In answer to my asking for a full explanation, I received an email from the president of their marketing division, explaining the cost increase. He explained they had no way of knowing just how deteriorated the interior of the steeple was. Basically, the structural steel that supports the bell portion of the steeple tower, (after being exposed to 48 years plus of wind and rain, and weather extremes), needed to be replaced. The underlying support will have to be re-enforced to accept the weight of the bell. The steel used to attach the steeple to the roof also needs replacing as most of it is rusted through. On August 12, 2021, Council voted to accept the change order and authorized the increased cost to complete the project. It was generally agreed these changes were necessary. Displayed in the Narthex on an easel you will see 6 photos their engineers provided as proof of the damage. Please stop and view them and see why we elected to proceed with the changes in costs. The total picture is not as challenging as you may suspect. In financing this project, (along with the roof), we were given a gift of $40,000 from the Social Ministry Committee, and we had $50,000 in escrow from the loan on the Luther Hall roof, leaving us just over $15,000 to pay off on the combined total. We received another $2,000 from the Quilters group and through the generosity of you, the members of our congregation, we raised an additional $8000 to date in support of the project. With these facts available to us, we felt that asking the congregation to support the additional costs would be acceptable. 10
One fundraising project we would like to bring before the congregation is the sale of the Eagle “snow catchers” from the old roof. With the advent of Asphalt shingles, these are no longer needed to keep snow from sliding off the roof. They will be available to any member for $ 25.00 to keep as a memento. They are on display in the narthex. If you are able, any monetary donation would be appreciated to help defray the costs. Checks can be made payable to TELC and note in the memo “steeple and roof fund”. The steeple with the bell calling our congregation to worship has been a part of Trinity since 1872, and this particular bell is a memorial to a member of our congregation, dedicated in 1910. Please continue to support this piece of Trinity’s and, of course, Lehighton’s history. Our steeple was safely transported to Campbellsville, KY on Thursday, July 22nd to be repaired. The new roof was completed on July 29th. As of August 9th, a total of $10,892 has been raised so far! Thank you for your support of these projects! Sincerely: (Al Sellers, Property committee co-chair) If you wish to put yourself, a friend or loved one on the church or private prayer list, please call the church office at 610-377-4303. Please note: It is important that you get permission from the person placed on the list due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The name will be placed on the list for 30 days unless we receive an update. 11

September is back to school time for the children at Jack and Jill Preschool! On September 7, the preschool will open its doors to the 2021-2022 class of preschoolers. The teachers are excited to get to know these wonderful little people and to guide them as they find out how much fun and learning they have in store for them in the upcoming preschool term. There are still vacancies in the primary class for any child from the community who is at least three old by September 1, 2021 and two years away from beginning kindergarten. Please call the preschool: 610-377-6562 or send an email: jackandjillpreschool@yahoo.com for more information. We would love to include them in our educational journey. We hope that the members of Trinity will include the staff and teachers in your prayers as we begin the new term. One way that you can support Jack and Jill preschool is through donations. Each month we will list a few supplies we need. They can be placed in a donation box on the side porch of the preschool. This month’s supplies are hand cleaning wipes, napkins, and hand sanitizer. We are grateful for your support. Thank you. THANK YOU so much for selecting me to receive this generous scholarship! The Jean D. & Robert A. Benner Nursing Scholarship will help me with the expenses of my first year attending nursing school at Bloomsburg University. With thanks and appreciation, Baylee Strausberger 14

OUR HELP — PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE This month, America marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which ended almost 3,000 lives and changed life forever for millions more. The nation was shaken to its very roots, with violence jolting out of us any assumption that “it can’t happen here.” September 11 banished any lingering notion that being on the side of “liberty and justice for all” served as insulation against mass tragedy. We now had more to fear than fear itself. Psalm 46 reminds us that “though the earth should change” (v. 2) — as it did on 9/11 —God remains “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (v. 1). We are never alone or without hope, even on life-altering days. How have God’s presence and power sustained you through life’s changes? How might sharing your story help someone else when their world or faith gets shaken? —adapted from The Wired Word PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY We have handmade prayer shawls and lap robes available. If you have a friend or relative who is ill and is in need of comfort or healing, please call the church office to arrange a time to pick one up. Prayer shawl ministry blesses both the people who receive the shawls in their times of tribulation or celebration and the knitters and crocheters who create them. 22
