John Paul College, Rotorua Whitworth Road, Rotorua. www.jpc.school.nz Ph: 07 3478 795 Fx: 07 3461 271 A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE JOHN PAUL COLLEGE COMMUNITY Term 3, Issue 31 20th September 2021 Ma te pono Me te aroha – Through Faith and Love 2021 School Theme : Kia kaha, Kia māia, Kia manawanui Be Strong, Be Brave, Be Steadfast Dear Parents/ Caregivers Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa, Greetings The Hepara Team have been working behind the scenes this year supporting families and students providing lunches and financial support. In these difficult times you may be aware of a family who would benefit from a helping hand, or you may be in this situation yourself. Our Team, with the generosity of our wonderful PTA, can assist with Attendance Dues Assistance Applications, School Fees, Camps, Uniforms, food hampers and other assistance. If you would like to confidentially speak to us about how we can help, please be in contact with Liz Lock on 07 929 9661 or email Liz.lock@jpc.school.nz We would once again like to thank our JPC community for their generosity in donating to our Hepara Fund so we can help our families in need. STAFF APPOINTMENTS Deputy Principal/Wellbeing Kaihautū Māori I am very pleased to announced that Ms Ally Gibbons has been appointed by the Board to replace our long serving and highly respected Deputy Principal Mrs Ali McHugh. Ms Gibbons has a long association with JPC and MacKillop College as the HOD, Physical Education. She was the former Principal of Rotorua Girls High and of two Catholic High Schools, St Catherine’s, Wellington and Sacred Heart College, Hamilton. We are very fortunate to have someone of her calibre and experience join our staff. Mr Whare Clarke Teacher In Charge of Kapa Haka I am delighted to announce that Mr Clarke will be joining JPC as the TiC of Kapa Haka. He is a former student of JPC and has considerable expertise in Kapa Haka. He is also fluent in Te Reo Maori. Whare has a passion for basketball which is a popular sport at JPC. Ms Georgia Taylor Ms Taylor who is currently on staff as in a part time capacity has been appointed to a full-time position within the Humanities Faculty. She has proven to be an excellent teacher with a wide skill set that will benefit our students. PRELIMINARY EXAMS The senior students commence their prelim exams this Wednesday. Please support your children by encouraging them to do their best, turn up and ask for assistance if they are struggling. Once your children get their marks back take an interest in them. Celebrate what they have done well. If the results are disappointing, encourage them to talk it through with teachers. PUNCTUALITY Being punctual to school is not only in the best interests of your child’s learning, it is an important life discipline. Employers won’t accept lateness. Turning up late to official functions and social occasions is perceived as rude and a sign of being disorganised. Many of our students are late to school without a reasonable excuse which frustrates teachers and disadvantages your child’s progress. We would appreciate you talking to your child about the importance of punctuality and supporting staff who may need to speak to your children when they are not punctual. God bless Patrick Walsh Principal

Instead of staying overnight at the camp we will run two day trips to Tui Ridge Adventure Park - on Monday the 22nd of November and Tuesday the 23rd of November. The game took place on a glorious morning over at Papamoa College, with conditions perfect for the game. John Paul College went two up in the first half with excellent goals from Joshua Tavendale and Cailyn Trask but made things a little nervy for themselves by conceding towards the end of the first half. However, they came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, with Adam Foley scoring four goals, one of which he scored from a corner. Papamoa scored a consolation in the second half, but the gap between the two teams was just too much on the day and JPC came out as deserving victors, the game ending 6-2 to JPC. There have been a number of standout players including captain Marcus Mellors, Cailyn Trask, Adam Foley, Joel Sutton and Joshua Tavendale; but to be fair, the whole team have had a superb season and have seamlessly slotted together under the direction of their coach, Steve Sutton. Steve, with the assistance of Robin Foley, has run the team with a rigorous approach to training and the development of a superb team spirit, united and focused on playing good football. They took a defeat in the first game against Katikati and then an unexpected loss against Trident mid-season, but in the top tier decider in the second half of the year JPC were undefeated, score 25 goals with only 6 conceded. Notable wins were the return against Katikati, Tauranga Boys and this final game against Papamoa, who were our closest rivals. Special thanks go to our coach, Steve Sutton, who has guided them consistently and passionately throughout the season; Robin Foley, who has assisted Steve, particularly in the training of this group of boys; and of course, the parents, who have travelled all over the Bay to give the boys the opportunity to compete. A further special mention is noted for Jan and Ingrid Snyman at Index Engineering, who sponsored the boys for their track tops. Looking forward to next year, the JPC Boys will have the challenge of the Premier Division, a whole new level of challenge for them, but one which I am sure they will rise to. Congratulations to the team on such an excellent achievement. 1st XI Girls’ Football John Paul College 1st XI Girls’ Football have had another outstanding season, ending the season as champions of the Central Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Football competition for the third year in a row. Once again, they were undefeated, scoring 57 goals in total and only conceding 4! The girls’ conquered allcomers, often racking up double digit scores. Our nearest rivals were down the long road to Taupo at Tauhara College, but we were able to beat them 4-1 in our first game and then claim the title with a 5-1 win in the final game of the season. Outstanding players were all over the field, but standouts have been captain Lilly Rowe, Allie Clarke, Melanie Van der Bruggen and Kendall Williams. Our thanks particularly go to our coach Gary Benfell, who has led the team to three successive championships. He has dedicated his time to coaching our students in training sessions and at every game throughout the last three seasons and has done so with little drama or complaint. The school and community appreciate all that he has done in giving these students opportunities in their sporting lives. Sadly, this will be Gary’s last season and we wish him all the best for the future. Mr S Bloomfield TiC: Football E: Stephen.bloomfield@jpc.school.nz
