Geerckens and Rawlins Getaway to Canada and Beyond Part 1 With our bags packed and ready for an adventure we headed to the Airport on Easter Saturday for our flight to Sydney. We met up with Peter and Noellene at the Hotel in Sydney, where we were staying for night, which was near the Central Station. We had a wander around the Rocks area and then settled in for the night. The Hotel had complimentary Easter Eggs on the counter which we raided often. Day 1 - We headed down to the Dock to board the Noordam for our cruise to Vancouver that will take 24 days will we be able to cope. Once on board and cabins checked out we did a tour of ship. The Noordam was built in 2006, can carry 1,916 passengers, with 800 crew, and has a maximum speed of 24 knots. She is starting to show her age and we learned that she was going in for a refit later this year. In the Gym/Spa area a free raffle was being held if you entered you had to return at 4.30 for the draw. We went along, but Peter and Noellene decided not to and of course Peter’s name was drawn out and as he wasn't there missed out on the $150 voucher for the Spa. We departed Sydney just on nightfall reversing back towards the Bridge, thought we would hit it, it was lovely to see the harbor lights and scenery as we sailed past. We played Music Trivia and enjoyed Happy hour on the Pool deck this afternoon. We had dinner in the Main Restaurant and met our waiters and bar staff. The next day’s activities and news had been delivered to the cabin when we returned from our dinner and Show. And we had a visitor in the cabin a towel animal with chocolates for us. Day 2 - Explored the ship again today trying to work out what was where and the best route to take to get there. Wendy went to Hula lessons there is a team of 5 Hawaiians on board holding lessons in Hula, Ukulele, Exercise classes, Polynesian crafts and giving talks about Hawaiian history. We caught up with Peter and Noellene for lunch and then Happy Hour drinks. Michael and Wendy had dinner at the Pinnacle Grill where I had Alaskan Crab Legs and a Bombe Alaska delicious and Michael had a Steak and Chocolate Volcano Cake. Day 3 - Wendy had Hula lessons again today and we all went to a talk on the islands that we will be visiting. Happy hour drinks at 4pm. After an enjoyable dinner with Peter and Noellene we went to the Theatre for the evenings show it was Patrick McMahon an Australian singer, from Nannup in WA, he put on a fantastic show. Day 4 - Yeah dry land today, Tadine, Mare, New Caledonia. We used tenders (the life boats) to get to the dock. Beautiful rock pools around the dock area, locals had a very small market as we got to the main street. Tadine is a very small island not spoiled by Tourism yet. Walked to the Natural Aquarium it was a 4klm walk, we saw some interesting homes and locals along the way, a few young guys carrying machetes came out of the tree line, they had just been harvesting coconuts and were walking back to the village for lunch. It was a bit scary seeing them at first but that is the way they live. The natural aquarium was a coral depression that the seawater filtered into with very clear water you could see fish swimming and hear the waves but couldn’t see the beach are. It was very hot and humid with no services out there at all. A few decided to hail a ride back to the town we walked it but it was very hot. It was great to get back to the wharf and have a cold drink and be handed and ice cold towel by the crew to cool down with. 1. About to Board 2. Peter and Noellene 3. With the Noordam in the distance 4. The Natural Aquarium on Tadine 13
Day 5 - On land again today it was Easo, Lifou, New Caledonia - Used the tenders again to get onto land. We booked a tour to a local village walked through the Catholic Church which was built in 1883, Missionaries settled there in 1853. We were welcomed to the Chief's house and hut, we tried coconut milk and meat. We were shown ho they cook chicken in banana leaf and then in traditional earth ovens and then had a tasting. Went into the Chief's hut had to go to another village as the entire chief's on the island were having a meeting at the first village. We were dropped back to wharf and had a look around the small village and market there but before boarding walked to Notre Dame des Lourdes a small Catholic church on top of the hill above the village. Day 6 - We had a quiet day today at sea, Noellene and I have found the Jigsaw room and entertained ourselves there. Each day we are at sea they have a speaker talking about issues with the region, pollution and on the tours you can do at the coming ports. Patrick McMahon from Nannup was entertainment he was fantastic once again. Day 7 - Today we arrived in Lautoka, Fiji. The ship was able to dock here, we caught a taxi our drivers name was Junior he was a massive guy he took us to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, it was planted by "Ironside" Raymond Burr. Beautiful garden full of Pools, orchids and ferns. After that we were dropped off in downtown Lautoka walke around local markets and walked back to ship for lunch it was very hot and humid. And the cold towels at the wharf were great. We had a lazy afternoon around the pool. It was also King's Day went to afternoon tea. Day 8 - This morning we woke and were in Savusavu, Vanua, Levu, Fiji. We walked around the town and then t small bus tour to a waterfall. Once again not spoiled by tourism, the waterfall was at the end of a track through the Taro fields and the local villages showed us the way. Once at the waterfall you could swim if you wished and quite a few did but not us. The bus drove us through a couple of small villages and farm land and showed us the site where Survivor 2019 was being filmed. Day 9 - Today we cross the International date line and we have the certificate to prove it. Yes get a day for free. early and went to Polyfit, then Hula now learnt both Hula's we will be doing on Variety show. Peter not well with a bad cough he’s had a few visits to the Pharmacy. Day 10 - Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa - Up early on deck for our entry into the port of Pago Pago. The ship reversed in through the narrow channel. It was very humid, the camera kept fogging up. Booked a tour on the wharf with a local family, they live high up in the mountain at Aoloau. We learnt how to say love “Alofa” and Welcome or hello “Talofa”. We were driven to the top of the mountain where her village is and took some amazing photos of the valley below to the sea and airport. We were then driven to Leone where we saw the monument for the 2016 Tsunam We took a walk through the local church grounds in Leone. Then on to sliding rock at Vailoatai and Fatu Rock and Flower Pot rock at Fatumafuti. The bus was made of wood on a Ford 450 chassis, it had a big big screen TV inside and when asked why it was we were told because the driver Amos needs a reason for locals to catch his bus so he shows the latest videos and music videos so the locals wait for his bus to come along because they get great entertainment on the ride. Back to the ship for lunch bought a sarong and a shirt on the wharf. Day 11 - A day at Sea saw us do our daily walk around the deck after breakfast. They had Sarong tying lessons today as well. We did some more jigsaws. After lunch had Hula lessons we had a quiet afternoon working on Jigsaws. Happy hour drinks then after dinner went to the show in the Theatre tonight the act is an Australian comedian. 14
FINKE OFF ROAD RACE TRIP 2019 – Part 2 (Amended) By Rob Booth Monday it all starts again for the return to Alice at 7.30am with the cars again leaving first. There are pro single and dual crewed buggies, non pro buggies, trophy trucks, extreme 4WD, various classes of 4WD, 2WD cars and utes down to fairly standard vehicles, one of which was a Suzi Jimny which made it down and back. There were also Polaris and other brands of 4WD recreational vehicles called side by sides with crews of two, one of which had to change a blown rear tyre opposite us on the way back. We were again trackside at 8-45am to see the dusty noisy procession begin. At least there was some breeze to move the dust away from us and onto other campers. The bikes left Finke at 11-30am so at 12-45pm we began to see the first of them returning. By about 4-30pm we went back to camp as the last of the struggling bikes passed, some of whom would not make it back within the time limit. We began to organize our “Finke Stew” which was left over roasts plus added extras (remember the bacon) on toast for dinner accompanied by the usual red and amber fluids to finish the day off. We had a pretty good fire so we didn’t leave too much wood for someone else to burn. Tuesday we had breakfast then pulled our camp apart loaded the trailer and hit the road back towards Alice about 9-30am. The road was certainly not as it was, so it was a slow drive. We stopped near the airport at the six huge bins to drop off our rubbish, they could have had six more there. As we had only driven about 80kms since filling up we turned onto Stuart Highway and headed for home. There was a lot of south bound traffic. We again stopped at Erldunda for another one of their showers. Five days without one was probably enough. Back on the road passing Kulgera, there was massive line ups for fuel at all of their pumps, lucky we didn’t stop. Traffic had thinned out as we continued south and heard on the radio someone asking if there was fuel available as they heard some stations had run out. We pulled into Marla for lunch and as there was a 25 mins wait in line for fuel decided we could make it to Coober Pedy to fill up. We got to about 120kms north of Coober Pedy and found a spot off the road in the scrub to camp for the night. We found plenty of wood for the fire so relaxed for a while before reheating our “Finke Stew” for the last time for dinner. During the night we were woken by the sound of rain on the tent. Lucky it wasn’t heavy and the tent was dry in the morning. Wednesday 12th we all woke early so got a good start and had left by 8am. Our first stop was Coober Pedy for fuel and coffee then back on the road. It was beginning to rain on and off the further south we came. There must have been quite a bit the previous day as there was a lot of water lying around on and off the road. We decided to head straight to Maitland as it would have been hard to find a camp spot without getting bogged, covered in mud or maybe soaked. Next stop was Pt Augusta for fuel and food and the final run home. We turned off at Pt Pirie then onto Pt Broughton, Kadina, Arthurton and arrived Maitland at 6-30pm. It was still raining and bloody cold. All in all it was a good trip but the next one we’ll sook it and take the caravans. Rob Booth 15 See Page 2 for the Complete Poem about flies
